The-valve stem 23 is provided with a series of rack teeth 36, and the supporting element 31 carries a pawl 37 adapted to interchangeably engage the rack teeth when the stem 23 is moved downwardly, so as to lock the valve in closed position. The outer end of the arm 1+1 is provided with an enlarged portion 38, to which is hingedly connected a block 39. When it is desired to 0perate the arm so as to apply the brakes and out off the supply of steam to the cylinders, when the signal is set at caution, the block 39 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 3

The enlarged portion 38 and the block 39 are provided .with recesses adapted to register when the block .39 is in operative position, and to removably receive a locking plate 10 for holding the block in said operative position, the plate 40 being provided with an eye 4-1 for the insertion of a suitable tool for facilitating the removal of the plate .when it is desired to fold the block on the mally closing the port, of an outwardly proje'cting operating lever, means for connecting the opera ting lever to the valve in the air pipe for operating the valve for opening the port when the valve is operated, means for connectingthe lever to the valve in the steam main for moving the valve to closed position when the lever is operated, a l1011- 'Zontally swinging block hingedly connected to the free end of the operating lever, and means fo holding the block in an extended position, for the purpose specified.
