RICHARD HARRISON MARTIN, 01E TOCCOA, GEORGIA.
OPERATIVE DEVICE FOR TRAIN-PIPE VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, Jltllld.
Application filed July 25, 1917. Serial No. 182,792.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toccoa, in the county of Stephens and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Operative Device for Train-Pipe Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is an operative device for train pipe valves wherein a crank operated lever actuates, through suitable connecting mechanism, the valve stem, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a valve operating mecha nism which will permit an attendant to open or close the valve without entering between the cars, second, to provide an operat ing crank or handle which will be out of the way yet easily accessible, third, to pro vide a simple and efficient valve operative mechanism.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
One practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device showing the same in place on the front end of a car, portions of the car being removed.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of'the device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference:
The lower portion of the end of the usual car body is shown at 1, and is provided with the ordinary coupling head 2, and pipe line 3. The pipe line 3 has interposed there- ,lfioptee of thin patent may be obtained. for five cents each. by addressing the in the usual cocks, one of which is shown at 4 for the purpose of turning 013? or on the fluid pressure.
The cock 4 is provided with a plug formed with an extending stem 5 which is squared, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. A crank 6 is secured on the stem 5 and the free end of the crank is provided with an eye through which passes one end of an eye link 7. The other end of the link 7 engages the eye end of a crank 8. The crank 8 depends from a median point of a horizontal shaft 9 which extends transversely of the car and is j ournaled in brackets 10 which are secured to the car by bolts 11 or otherwise.
At each end of the shaft 9 is provided a downwardly and rearwardly inclined handle 12, which may be integral with the shaft, as shown. It will be observed that these handles lie beneath the car .within easy reach of the sides so that they are out of the way and yet in position to be readily operated by the attendant.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is
In an operative device for train pipe valves, the combination with a car and a pipe line secured thereto, of a cock for the pipe line, a plug in the cock, a crank secured to the plug, brackets secured to the end face of the car, shaft journaled in the brackets and extending transversely across the end of the car, a crank depending from the shaft, an eye link connecting the cranks, and a crank forming a handle depending from each end of the shaft adjacent the sides of the car and extending downwardly and rearwardly beneath the car.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD HARRISON MARTIN.
