Description

E. B. STAGKPOLE.
CUFF. APPLICATION FILED Maze, i916.
Patented Apr. 1919.
nvnnn'r'r B; s'rAcKPoLn, or lsnA'rzr rlniwnsnmeron. [ff
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Evnnn7rr B: STACK;
POLE, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements'in Cuffs,--ef
Which the followiugjis a specification. v
v This invention relates toi'cuffs, and has,
for its object th provi ion of a cuff adapted for use. with cuff-fasteners of the. type' in which the meeting dges of the cuff. ii -use, are embraced by the arms of a \l-shaped plate having fastening means extending. inwardly fronji, one or both of its arms; and; which projectthroughone or both of the. opposed. button-holes to engage each other or in some other way. operateto maintain the edges of the cuffinposition in the. V-
shaped member The cuff of the present inventionis especially suitable for use with a fastener ofjthe type illustrated in my cocuff, so that the continuity of the edge-line;
of the cuff will not be broken bythe V- shaped member, which, heretofore in 'embracing the edge of the cuff has necessarily projected from the edge of the cuff for a distance equal to the thickness of the claspl' This is quite objectionable,since it causes considerable wear of the portion of. the cuff beneath the V-shaped member, and [the pro- 'jecting portion is constantly striking against articles about the wrist of the user. Also, it is very apt to catch in the lining of the coatsleeve during movement of the cuff therethrough. By the use of my device these objections are overcome, and the appearance of the cuff and fastener is also much i1nproved.
In providing such a cuif especially suit able for use with the cuff-fastener of my above application it is sufficient to provide just one cuff button-hole, since there is but I filed December 16, 916, ttIld'.Wlll be. de-
one'inenib erbon theinside the v sha-ped r t a clasp :which penetrates the cufi;
i.Tl1Q invention w1ll be better understood byv reference tov the accoinpaiiylng drawing,
@jFigureWl is a side View of the'cuffj-before beingflfoldedy I, 1 y Fig.2 is a topview of the cuff, folded, with its meeting-edges.secured together'by,
a cuff -clasp constructedaccording to my apphcation herembefore referred 1 to, partof j the cuff being ishown insection, for. clearmess; and
Fig/3 is ZL-SidCiViGW of the foldedicu-if shownin Fig.2, part ofxthe3V-shaped clasp be ngbroken away. 1
The invention is shoivnla's applied tb ,o 4
only of a pair of cuffs,- but it will; be readilyunderstood that, the othercuff of the pair will be. "similarly,v constructed .qasu toTthe notches, jbut that the positions; of p the; but 1 ton-holeswill be reversed.
' .The cuff :1. is. of'the ordinary shape, andis provided with theusual button-hole 2 and a button hole 3 in-a tab 4 for reception of the headof the'wristband-button. But one cuff button-hole 5, is required, this, in the leftso I hand cuff illustrated, being'opposite the edge 6 of the cuff which is provided'with theme f1. In alinenient with thebutton-lfole'band 1n the edges 6 of the cuff there are notches 7.,
3. The clasp illustrated is OnBfOf the'form described in my prior-application, and in of depth substantially. equal to the thick-. ,ness? at the angle 8 of a cuff-clasp 9 of the type which comprises a V-shaped plate adapted to receive the meeting-edges of the p folded- .cufi', asclearly shown in Figs. 2rand which onegof the arms 1010f the plate 9 is provided with a pivotedbutton 11 having a prong/12; adapted to be inserted andwithe drawn through the button hole, 5, the point .13 of the, prong 12 piercing slightly the -in side of the cuff opposite the button-hole 5, when in its inner position. To insure niaintenance of the cuff in proper position, the
opposite arnrli may be provided with, short, v
prongs 15 forming between them a notch intowhich the point 13 of prong 12 bears.
Tov prevent inadvertent Withdrawal of the prongf12, a spring 16 is secured to the button ll beside the prong 12, and nests against the inside of prong 12 during withdrawal of the latter. Its outer end becomes separated. however, from the-pron 12 when the cufffastener is in position ofuse and assumes a position of rest;
The use of the device will be apparent.
The cult is folded in the ordinary manner,
hole 5 to its maximum inner position and its point 18 will be pressed into the fabric of the portion of the cuff opposite the button-hole 5.
4 The outer surface of the angle 8 of plate 9 will thus lie flush with the meeting-edges of the cuff, as indicated in Fig. 3. While one form of V-shapedfastener is illustrated,
it will be apparent that so far as the use of the notches '7 is concerned the fastening means for the Vj-shaped member may be altered as desired. It is preferable that the shape of the notches 7 conform to the crosssectional shape of the plate 9 at its angle 8, although this is not entirely necessary.
The usefulness of'the notches 7 andjth'e improved appearance of the cufl. will be apof the of the type which embraces parent without further description or discussion.
I claim 1. A cuff for use with a V-shaped clasp of the type which embraces the meetingedges of the cufl", having alined notches in its meeting edges, said notches forming a seat for the angle-portion of the clasp.
2. A cufi' for use with a V-shaped clasp of the type which embraces the meetingedges ofthe cuff, having alined notches in 'its meeting-edges said notches forming a seat for the angle-portion of the clasp and conforming in shapeto the cross-section of said clasp at its angle.
3. 'A culi' for use with a V-shaped clasp of the type which embraces the meetingedges of the cuff and whereof one arm is provided withan inwardly extending fastening-member, said end having a notch in each of its meeting-edges and a single buttonhole in alinement with said notches and adapted to receive the inwardly extending member of said clasp, said notches forming a seat-for the angle-portion of the clasp.
4. A cuff for use with a Vshaped clasp the meeting edges of the cufland whereof one arm is providedwith an inwardly extending fastening-member, said cufl' having a single cuif-buttonhole adapted to receive the inwardly extending member of said clasp.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
