GOLLAPSIBLE VENEER BERRY-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
Application med May s, 1917. serial No. 167,177.
useful Collapsible Veneer Berry-Box, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible veneer berry boxes.
The object is to provide a box for holding berries, fruit, or the like, which is designe to be formed of ordinary stock wood veneer, and which, when empty, is capable of being collapsed and compactly folded into a thin package and thus, when packed into bundles,
may be shipped in great quantities at reduced cost of transportation.
Another object is to construct a box of this character having a minimum number of parts and fastening means therefor, and
to so fashion the component strips of veneer that they may be formed, scored, slitted and otherwise treated without necessitating an undue number of separate operations.
A further object is to improve the construction of this class of boxes so as to provide one which is capable of being set up by a simple operation, and which may be as readily collapsed and folded to occupy a minimum amount of space.
A full and complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from a careful consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification; it being understood that while the drawings show a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to strict conformityv therewith, but may be changed or modified, so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the claim appended hereto.
In the drawings, in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in each of the several figures:-
Figure 1 is a perspective `view of one form of the invention in a setup condition.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same viewed from the opposite direction to Fig.' 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bottom member detached from the walls of the box.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the improved berry box in set up condition.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the bottom member shown in the v form illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in' Fig. 1 what may be considered the, preferred form of the invention, wherein a complete box for berries, fruit, or the like, is formed of but two members or parts, one of which comprises the sides or body of the box, and the other the bottom therefor, the two parts being securely fastened together by the use of but three staples or other fastening devices, and so arranged as to permit of the disengagement of certain interlocking means, to. be described, and to allow of folding the two members into a fiat package for bundling purposes.
In order to accomplish these ends, the body member comprising the sides of the box is composed of a strip 1 of ordinary stock veneer of a width equal to the desired height of the box, and this width may vary in accord-ance with the predetermined capacity of the same.
The strip 1 is of a length sufficient to form the four' sides of the box and to provide for a terminal flap 2 at one end thereof, the said strip being provided with lateral scores 3 arranged equi-distantly apart and adapt ed to permit of bending along these lines to form the corners or angles of the box, the panels 4, 5, 6 and 7, thus formed, comprising the sides of the same.
The terminal flap 2 is adapted to lie on the outside of the adjacent side panel 4 and and 11, extending throughout the length of the panel and spaced a considerable distance from the top and bottom edges of the said panel 6, so as tovprovide three independent longitudinal strips therein of sufficient width to withstand the strain, at these points of juncture-with the adjacentside panels 5 and 7, incident to the application of certain parts to be interloclifeds therewith, as will slitting of.- thel-body member does not necessitate a separate-.operation which would'i add to the cost of manufacture. The scoring. of the .body member to form the anglesy or corners of. the :box is .performed after the .bodyl l member has beencut out` andA slitted as describedy Y rllhe;A bottom; member 12 of the; box is formed ofa. strip-of; veneer somewhat lessv in width; thanl the i length of the: side panels ofl the.l box so."y as4 tof provide Ventilating spaces onY each side thereof' for. the purpose of alflowing. the. freepassage of air through. the
contents, of: the box.
rEhe bottom 12, is suitably scored. tofprof lvideterminal'.flaps-.lfand 14, the-flap14being bent to an upstandi-ng. positiony andv adaptedto lieI on the inner side ofthe side panel4 andtobe securedthereto, adjacent. one. side. edge of the aforementioned staple 8:' and. anv additional staple 15 arranged adjacent Ytheother side-edge of. the yflap` 14: and, like, the a staple.. 8, near the. top edge of j the side panel 4. The opposite terminalflapl of-.the bott0mmember. 12 is -taperedalong its side edges-,and is provided, atz an intermediate point of 5 its juncturev with. the.l bottomV 12,V withl a depending'L pointed or. \lshapedy tongue,y 16,V formed integral. therewith and adaptedpto'lgat. allftimes, in a plane with,
the said flap.
The tongue' 16 -isformed by. cutting vor slitting entirely through the bottom member 12 inwardly fromthe score line, the scoring eX- tendingx from. the-side edgesv of the bottom member at the.V pointi of. juncture with. the
Hap, upto but. not acrossthe said tongue, as clearly, show-n in-,Eig 4 ofthe.I drawings.
The vfl'afp 13'is adapted to lie withiny theV central. strip... ofl the,V side wall 6.- and to pass upwardly and outwardly: through theupper slit 10and2tof lie,.at its upperextremity, on the outer face of the upper str-ip ofcthe. wall-6:.
By ele'evating` the bottom member 12,v it will. be seenl that. the downwardly extending: tongue 16- may, byv reason= of. its pointed lower end, be readily introduced into the lower slit 11. ofthe side wall, so, as to lieon the .fouten face, ofithelovver strip `of said side y.and prevent: the. bottom.i from4 being depressedout of ahorizontalpositiomby rea.- sonofthetop. edgeof` the lower strip ofzthe,
side wall being drawn thereby beneath the adjacent outer edge of the bottom.
In thisy manner the" bottom of the box is supported at each end in spaced relation to 'the lower edges of the side walls, thus providing an air space beneath the same ,forthe purpose of Ventilating the fruit or other'perishable commodity contained therein.
A somewhat modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 5- and 6. of.V the drawings, wherein a body member` 1e. similar to that already described is used, having the side panels 4, 5, 6 and 7. In this formof the device the oppositely disposed side walls 5y and 7- are simultaneously slitted at. the timey the body member 1 is cut from thesheet, of veneer in amanner similar tothelirst described form of the invention. 10i and11a are adapted/toreceivethe` end flaps-17. and 18 of a bottom men-lberk 19.-.and
tosupport the same in spaced relationftofthe.
bottom .ofthe box, ask heretofore described,
These slitsl the end flaps beingeachfproyided `with a.' pair.
ofl pointedA tongues .17? and 18a, respective-ly,
adaptedl to engageand interlock-with the-v lower slits 11a, 11?v toprevent the-downward:
movement ofthe bottom 19.
In the lastdescribed form of. the'invention, it will be Seenthatonly. twofasteningy devices 2O arenecessary tohold thebody member l? together, andI furthermore@ that' the bottom kmember 19 may be entirelyl de'-y tached therefrom, by simply raising the same until.thetongue's-17.a and 18%' are,` disengaged from theirvv respective .slitsfw'henl the.; saines may be removed,` packed to ether.l in bundles and shipped .separately rom the bodyA members, thus effecting a: greatfsaying in space and a consequentsavingin costof.
transportation.
By reasonof the fact that slits arefprovided in the body, it. is essential in.v assembling-the box that theflaps should bereadily passed through thelslits. 'llhe tapering Vsidesofthe flaps, in-connection with thetapered or Veshapedy tongues, enable thel flaps and tongues tov bequickly passed. throughthe slits, and the box easily set upa I,-napplyingl ltd the bottommember, the Hap.' isiirst passed..
