To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that'I, VILLIM F.v CREMEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certainV new and useful Improvements in Brake-Beam Hangers, of which the following is a speciication.
-My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in brake beam hangers and particularly to a hanger that is so arranged that after the pin is placed through the hanger arms and the said hanger arms placed in their normal or set position it will be impossible for the pin to work out or be lost from the hanger arms while the hanger is in service. As is well known a good many derailments are caused by the failing of the brake beamV hangers, allowing the brake beam and brake heads, etc., to drop on the track in front of the wheels.
An object therefore of my invention is.
to provide a brake beam hanger that will be simple in construction and so arranged that the hanger arms are locked in position by a special form of pin and bracket and when the said hanger is in its set position it is impossible for the pin to become disengaged or to work out of the said hanger arms. v
Another object of my invention is to so construct the brake hanger that it may ybe quickly assembled, or on the other hand may be quickly taken down or apart if so desired.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain new and novel arrangements and combination of arts as will be hereinafter more fully descri' ed and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hanger as attached to a standard M. C. B. brake head;
Fig. 2 is a-front elevation of the hanger and part of the bracket;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modied form;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one arm of the hanger arm of the modified form; and
Fig. 5 is a view of the opposite hanger arm.
Referring now to the drawings, an ordinary standard brake head 1 is shown, which is secured to the brake beam 2, which beam is supported by my improved hanger 3, and the upper end of said hanger is pivotally secured to the bracket 4, which bracket may be secured to any part of the pedestal or truck asl desired.
Referring now to the form of hanger Shown in Fig. 2, it' will be seen that it consists of a substantially` U-shaped member having the two side arms 5 and 6 and the integral lower arm 7. The upper` ends of the arms 5 and 6 are enlarged as at 8 and 9, and are provided with the seats 10 and 11 located centrally thereof and on the inner portion of said enlarged portions 8 and 9. Provided on the inner surfaces of thetwo arms 5 and 6 and at a slight distance below the enlarged portions 8 and 9 are the two outstanding upwardly bent lugs 12 and 13.
Referring now to the bracket 4 it will be seen that the cross piece 14 has to be of a certain design, that is, it must be provided with the downwardly extending lips 15 near itsV opposite ends. The remaining portion of the bracket may be of any form desired. The purpose of these downwardly extending lips 15 and the upwardly extending lugs v12 and 13 is; that after the pin 16 is placed in the seat 10 formed in the enlarged head portion Sand passed-through the longitudinally extending openingl 17 in the bracket arm 14, the arms 5 and 6 are sprung slightly apart and held inan upright position, that is in a position that will be parallel to the tracks, and allow the enlarged head portion 9 to spring over the opposite end of the pin 164 so that the ends of the pin rest in the seats 10 and 11, and thel arms 5 and 6 may then be swung downwardly and the lugs 12 and 13 pass behind the downwardly extending lips 15 of the bracket 4 to prevent the arms 5 Aand 6- from being forced outwardly, making it impossible'for the pin 16 to become dislodged from the seats 10 and 11 formed in thel enlarged Yportions 8 and 9.

Referring now to the other form shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, it will be seen that in thisinstance instead of having the arms 18 and 19 formed integral, they are two separate structures, and slightly differentwith regard to each other. Referring first to the arm 18, it will be seen that it is also pro'- vided with an enlarged upper end 20 which is provided 'with a rectangular seat 21 and an opening 22 registering with said seat. Also formed directly above the seat 21 is a cap portion 23 which extends outwardly and downwardly 'beyond the upper edge of the seat 21. The purpose of this cap portion is that the pin 24 may be angularly held with regard tothe arm 18 and then passed through the opening 22 and the rectangular head 25 of the pin be placed in the rectangular seat 21. From this it vwill be seen that the pin 24 can not be removed from the arm 18 unless the same is first tilted upwardly so that the head 25 can pass under the downwardly projectin cap portion 23. rlhis arm 18 is also provi ed with the upwardly extending lug 26 Vsimilar to the lug 12 in the first mentioned form of hanger.
Near` the lower end 'of this hanger arm 18 isY also an enlarged recessed portion 27 and an'opening 28 registering therewith so that a second pin 29 may be passed through the openingl 28 and the head 30'of the pin 29 tightly fit within' the recessed portion' 27 Referring now to the opposite arm 19, this has an opening 31 near its Lipper end and upwardly extending lug 32 similar to the lug 26vand a further opening 33 near Vits lower end. The 'openinyo' V33 also has the slight keyway 34 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The pin 29 atY its end is provided with the outwardly extending lug 35 to clamp against the outer surface o' shortly explained. The cross arm 36 of the bracketis similar to the cross arm 14 of the bracket'4, and is provided with the downwardly 'extending lips ,37 similar to theY nps V15.
The assemblin of this bracket is Vas fol-V lows: First the pin 24 is passed through the vist opening 22 in the arm 18 which lis lmade possible 'by tilting the saidvpin in an upward direction until the head 25 passes under the cap portion 23. When its head is seated in the recessed portion 21 the bracket arm 18' is held in a horizontalposition Yso that the lug 26 maypass infront of the lip 37 "so that theV the arm 19 as will be allowed to drop so that the lug 32 will pass behind the lip 37. Both arms are now in a vertical position andthe lower ends of said arms are forced slightly toward each other which is made possible by having the openings 31 and 22 of greater diameter than the diameter of the pin 24. The pin 29 is then passed rst through the opening 28 but not so far that the Vhead 30 will be engaged in the recess 27. The pin 29 is then turned until the lug 35 passes through the keyway 34 and is then turned until the lug35 will be at right angles to the bracket arm 19, when the arms 18 and 19 are again forced outwardly .so that the head 30 will now t tightly within the recessed portion 27 The brake head is then passed through the said hanger and of course after it is once in position it will be impossible for the lower ends of the arms 18 and 19 to be forced toward each other, so that it is impossible for the pin 29 to work out or become disengaged from the two said arms 18 and 19.
If it is desired to remove the hanger the brake head will rst have to be removed and the arms18 and 19 swung inwardly and the pin 29 turned so that the lug- 35 will pass through the opening 34 and the arms may then be swung upwardly as previously mentioned and the upper pin disengaged.
From the foregoing it will be seen that with either form of the brake hanger shown it will be impossible for the pins to become accidentally lost thereby Vpreventing the brake beam from dropping beyond its normal position. At the same time the hanger arms may be renewed or the pins renewed by operating the hangers as heretofore described. 'Y Y The hanger is one that is relatively cheap to manufacture, having-but few parts and necessitating no great care after the sameis onceset up in osition. Y
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A brake beam hanger comprising two hanger arms and means connecting said hanger arms at their 'lower ends, abracket provided with downwardly eXtend-inglips, a pin carried by the bracket and'engaging the arms and means carried by the arms and disposed behind'said lips forretaining the hanger arms in position when said'hanger 3. A brake beam hanger comprising two hanger arms and means connecting the lower ends of said hanger arms, a bracket arm provided with downwardly extending lips and lugs formed on the inner surface of said arms and near their upper portion adapted to pass behind said lips when the hanger arms are in a vertical position, and a pin engaging the upper ends of said arms, the parts being so arranged that said pin is prevented from being removed from said arms when said arms are in a suspended vertical posin tion.
4. A brake beam hanger comprising two hanger arms and means connecting the lower ends of said hanger arms, a bracket arm provided with downwardly extending lips, and lugs formed on the inner surface of said hanger arms, said arms adapted to assume a horizontal position when being removed and adapted to be swung downwardly to a vertical position so that the said lugs will pass behind the said lips to prevent the said arms from moving away from'each other, and means connecting the upper ends of said` arms andadapted to be placed in position when the arms are in their horizontal position and said means being held from removal when the arms are in a suspended vertical position.
5. A brake beam hanger comprising two hanger arms and upwardly extending lugs formed near the upper ends of said arms and on the inner surface thereof, a cap portion extending over one of said openings, and a pin adapted to pass through said opening provided with the cap portion when said pin is held in an angular position with regard to said arm, a bracket arm provided with two downwardly extending lip portions and the aforementioned lugs on said hanger arms adapted to swing behind said lips when said arms are in a suspended vertical position, and a second pin passing through openings in the lower portions of said arms, and means for preventing said pin from being disengaged from said arms.
6. A brake beam hanger comprising two hanger arms provided with upwardly extending lug portions on the inner surfaces of said arms, a bracket provided with downwardly extending lips and said lugs adapted to eX- tend behind said lips when said arms are in a suspended vertical position, a recessed portion in the upper end of one of said arms and provided with a cap extending partly over said recessed portion, and a pin adapted to be angularly held with regard to said arm when it is to be inserted, and said cap portion preventing said pin from being removed unless said pin is held in an angular position, openings formed in the lower ends of said arms and one of said openings provided with a recessed portion registering therewith, and a pin adapted to pass through the openings in the lower ends of said arms when said pin is held in a certain position and the lower ends of said arms are forced inwardly, and said pin to be rotated and to lock said arms when said arms are again forced outwardly.
7 A brake beam hanger comprising two hanger arms and a bracket coperating with said arms to hold said arms in their set position when said arms are in a suspended vertical position, the lower ends of said arms adapted to be swung inwardly, and means connecting said arms and to lock said arms when the lower ends of said arms are again forced outwardly.
8. A brake beam hanger comprising in part a hanger arm provided-with an opening adapted to receive a pin and a recessed portion registering with said opening and adapted to receive the head of the pin and an outwardly and downwardly extending cap disposed over a part of said recessed portion.
