SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,361, dated November 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Mosns LALONDE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Mooers, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a semaphore, the object being to provide a construction whereby the parts are less liable to become disabled due to ice or sleet, and, further, to provide means for exhibiting the danger-signal in case the operating-cable is broken.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a semaphorepost constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the parts in the position they assume when the danger-signal is exhibited. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the post; 2, the arm, pivoted to one side there of by means of the laterally-projecting plates 3 and the pivot 4; in the manner shown. The signal-arm 2 is normally held in a horizontal position by means of a curved radially-proj ecting arm 5, provided with a weight 6. The means for drawing the signal-arm downwardly consists of a cable 6 connected with the signal-arm near its pivot and trained 'around the guide-pulleys 7 upon the post 1.
The lamp-standard 8 is mounted in bearings upon the stationary part of the frame and is provided at its lower end with a socket 9, that rests upon an antifriction-ball 10, that itself rests within a socket 11 upon the post. Near the lower end portion of the standard 8 is a cam 12, while a yoke-frame 13 is provided with a guide-aperture 14 at one end, which slides upon the circular portion of the post above this cam 12. The lower end of said yoke 13 is provided with a slot 15, that receives the cam portion of the standard.
The said yoke 13 is also provided with two guide-rollers 16, that receive between them the arm 5 of the signal-arm. The collar 17 limits the upward movement of the standard 8 in an obvious manner.
It is seen from the foregoing description that as the signal-arm 2 is pulled downward by the cable 6 the arm 5, owing to the curvature thereof, raises the yoke 13, which, engaging the cam 12 of the standard 8, turns said standard to exhibit the proper side of the lantern. It is further seen that should the cable break the weighted arm 5 causes the signal-arm to move to the danger position, and at the same time the standard 8 will turn to expose the danger side of the lantern.
The parts of the device are constructed with especial reference to the prevention of inaction owing to the freezing of the parts, and it is noted that the bearing between the standard and the semaphore-post is such that two pivots must be clogged up, and this reduces the liability of the post being frozen to the other parts of the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. The combination with a post, of a signalarm pivoted thereto and provided with a weighted, curved arm, a rotatable lanternstandard mounted in bearings upon said post and having a cam, a movable yoke mounted In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
