METAL CLOTHES-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 18, 1916. Serial No. 91,988.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, EDWARD J. BAUMEL, a' citizen of the United States. 're'sidin at Pomona, in the county of Los Angeles, tate of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Clothes-Pins; and I do hereb declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a metal clothes 1n.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a clothes pin which may be readily attached toa line and will malntain the clothes firmly in place thereon.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that the greater the size of the line, the greater will be the gri ping power of the pin.
if further object of the invention resides in the provision of a clothes pin which may be stamped from a blank of metal and which will be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same applied to a clothes line;
Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and
Fig. 4 is a view of the blank before it'is bent into shape.
In the drawing I have illustrated a device constructed in accordance with my invention which includes a continuous strip of metal bent upon itself to form a air of spaced legs 1 and a loop portion 2. 'l hese legs 1 are bent apart, at 3, 4 and 5, the portions of the legs between the portions 3. and 4 being normally in contact, as at 6, as are also the portions between the separated portions 4 and 5, at 7. The portions 5 form guides to assist the line in its entrance into the .space 8 where it is tightly gripped.
Each of the legs is provided with reinforcing ribs 9 which are stamped from the material and each of the legs is further ,pro-- vided with an inwardly extending keeper 10 wh ch is stamped from the material. A coil sprlng 11 is located between the portions 3 of the legs and the ends of this spring extend 'in the same direction and through the keepers 10 as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
It will thus be seen that the device consists of two elements only, namely a body portion and'a spring and that the body portion is formed from a blank such as disclosed in Fig 4 of the drawing. It will be further seen that the spring 11 may very readily be put in place by the mere insertion of the ends of the sprin through the keepers 10 and it will be furt er seen that the forcing of the legs 1 apart will tend to bind the spring 11 in place more forcibly. It will further be seen that the device being of such a simple construction may be readily and cheaply manufactured.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention 113 has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the deta1ls of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A clothes pin consisting of a spring metal plate bent upon itself to form spaced and a connecting bight portion, the legs adjacent to the bight being conformed to the curvature of the bight to closely approxi mate a circle and having such portions flat, the remaining spaced .longitu inal corrugations and ears struck inwardly at opposite points between the corrugations and a helical contractile spring engaged with the ears.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD J .BAUMEL. Witnesses:
