To all whom it may "On/ 87W Be it known that I, GEORGE J. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Iugham and State of Mirhigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in radiators.
The main object of this invention is to provide in a radiator a filling opening and closure therefor which makes it unnecessary to provide a funnel or other similar means for filling the radiator, the closure being provided with vents for the escape of steam and water and so arranged that such discharge of water therefrom as is likely to occur in use will return to the radiator and not run over upon the casing.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Fig. II is an enlarged detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I.
In the drawing similar reference numerals refer to similar parts in both views.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates the upper tank of a ra diator, the lower tank not being illustrated. The lower tank of the tubes 2 is preferably of the type shown in my application for Letters Patent filed June 27, 1917, Serial No. 17 7,249, of which this application is a division.
The top wall of the upper water tank is formed with a central well or recess 3, the bottom of which is provided with a threaded opening 4 for the cap 5. As shown the cap is with the bottom f the well to limit the inward movement of the cap. When the cap is removed the water for filling the radiator may be poured into the well and it is therefore unnecessary to provide a funnel. In the event of the water boiling over it is returned to the radiator through the openings 6 thus preventing its running down on the outside of the radiator or casing and injuring or destroying the finish or detracting from the appearance thereof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a radiator comprising a water tank having a depression or well in the top wall thereof, the bottom of said Well being provided with a threaded cap opening, and a hollow cap threaded into said opening, there being a drain and vent opening near the lower end of said cap, the upper end of the cap projecting above the top wall of the radiator. 2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a radiator comprising a Water tank having a depression or well in the top wall thereof, the bottom of said well being provided'with a threaded cap opening, and a hollow cap threaded into said opening, there being a vent and drain opening near the lower end of said cap.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a radiator comprising a water tank having a depression or well in the top wall thereof adapted as a filling funnel and as an overflow receptacle, the bottom of said well being provided with a threaded cap opening, and a cap threaded into said opening.
