LEVEL.
Specification of'Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 18, 1919.
Application filed May 24, 1918. Serial No. 236,381.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID A. Roman and EDGAR H. -PRICHARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in levels and more particularly to plumb levels used by carpenters employing a weighted indicator and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character which can be readily read from either side of the body of the device.
Another object of this invention is the provision of transparent panels inclosing the indicatorand having graduations thereon for cooperating with the indicator so as to determine the fall of any grade or pitch.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a level of thekabove stated character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which maybe manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combi nation, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.' F I For a complete understanding of our in-- vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanyingdrawings, ;in which Figure l is a side elevation of a level constructed in accordance with our invention,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the satire,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view llustrating the manner of mountlng the lIldlcator, I 3
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the device illustrating the manner of securing the transverse panels to the body,
gig. 5 is a plan view of one of the panels, an
Fig. 6 is a detailsectional View illustrating the means of securing the panels to the body.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the nu meral 1 indicates the body of a level having a centrally arranged circular opening 2 extendingv therethrough and having in communication therewith recesses 3. A supporting structure 4- consisting of an arcuate shaped bottom wall 5 and segmental side walls 6 is positioned within the circular opening having the bottom Wall 5 secured to the wall of the opening in any well known manner. Substantially semi-circular extensions 7 are formed upon the side Walls 6 of the supporting structure 4. The extensions '7 are apertured to receive a pivot pin 8 on which are positioned spacing collars 9. The pivot pin 8 has secured thereto an indicator 10 having one end pointed while its opposite end has secured thereto a weight 11. The weight 11 is adapted to retain the indicator 10 in a vertical position at all times regardless at what angle the body 1 is disposed.
Transparent panels 12 constructed of glass or other similar material are positioned within the recesses 3 and are retained therein by attaching rings 13 which are threaded to rings 14: secured in the recesses 3 by fasteners 15' whereby the panels are firmly held in position and which can be readily removed when desired. The transparent panels 12 have stenciled thereon graduations 15 which are arranged in semicircular formationas clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. The .graduations 15 are so arranged on the panels 12 that the pointed end of the indicator 10 will be disposed in rear thereof.
The graduations may be of any scale desired.
' While we have shown and, described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it
will be understood that minor changes in from the spirit and scope of fire invention as. claimed.
What We claim as new is A level comprising a body having an opening with communicating recesses, a sup porting structure Within said opening, an in dicator pivoted to said supporting structure, a Weight secured to one end 03E the indicator, transparent panels Located Within said recesses and having graduetiens thereon for coperatien Wi bh the indicate-nearer? threaded rings secured in said recesses, and rings threaded rte the first named rings and overlying the peripheries 0f the panels.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signa- 15 tures in presence of twe Witnesses.
