Description

L. F. NORDLINGL PLU MB AND LEVEL. APPLICATION men JUNE 22. I9! 7.
Patented De.18,1912.
v ledyzkzlf lfzrdkkg wnuesses ATTORNEY mm STATES erm seem-i LEnvIn F. nonnrme, or QSYLQMINNES-bTAflU I v 1 LUM Ann To all whom it mag/concern: I Beoit known thatI, Lnnvm F. Normans, a citize'nof the UnitedStates, residing at Oslo, in the county of'Marshall and-State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbs and Levels, of which the following is a specifications This invention relates to combined plumbs and levels, the primary object of the invention being to provide a tool of this character which may be utilized to determine the question of whether or not a body or object is .plumb or level, and has further for an ob-' ject to provide a device of this character wherein the indicating fingers may be read or observed from either side of the body of the instrument, thus increasing the efficiency and usefulness of devices of this nature.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character mentioned which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, which has its movable or indicating parts so constructed and assembled as to minimize the opportunity for wear, breakage or derangement, which shall be accurate in its operation or indications, and which will prove thoroughly efiicient and practical in use.
With these objects in view together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawing and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined plumb and level constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the instrument,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View taken substantially upon line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken upon line H of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, 5 indicates the body of the plumb and level, and may be formed of wood or metal of the desired size. This body, is in the present instance,
I Specification of Letters Patent. 18,1917. Application fii'ea'iunezz, 1917. Serial No. 175,404. r
opening .extending from .t-o a rear, edges of the same, the saidopening being indicated .at:'?, and communicates with the opening 1 6. extending from the: front; to rear. faces 1 of; the usaid' body'. ;E;xtending from thefrontjtp the rear faceofthebody E and concentric with the arcuate opening 6 is a shaft 8', which has pivoted intermediate 1 its ends an indicator in the form of the finger 9. The upper end of this finger communicates withthe arcuate opening 6, and the lower end of the finger is equipped with a weight indicated at 10. It is obvious from this construction that when the body 5 is disposed vertically with its channeled or cutout end uppermost, the weight 10 will maintain the indicating finger 9 in vertical position, and the upper end of the indicating finger will be clearly observed from the front or rear face of the body. If desired,
the edges of the arcuate opening may be graduated so as to designate certain angles, and it will be observed that the edges defining the arcuate opening 6 are provided with metallic plates indicated at 12. It is preferred that these plates be countersunk, so'
as not to protrude beyond the front or rear surfaces of the body, and by employing plates of this character, danger of chipping or wearing away ofthe edges defining the opening is eliminated.
The level includes a finger 13 pivoted intermediate its ends as at let upon the body 5 intermediate the ends of the latter, and the pivot pin or shaft extends through from the front to the rear faces of the said body.
One edge of the body is cut away as at 15,
and the said cutout portion is concentric to the shaft 14. The edges of this cutout portion are also protected by metallic plates 16. The said body is provided with an opening 17 communicating with one edge of the body, and this opening accommodates the pivotally 'mounted finger 13. It will be observed from this construction that a thoroughly eliicient level has been provided, and one which will always remain true. By so mounting the indicating fingers of the plumb and level, it is obvious that danger of breakage or derangement of these impor-' tant elements of the instrument is wholly eliminated, as no parts of these movable fingers extend beyond the surfaces of the body.
While the present disclosure is that of what is believed to be the preferred embodi ment of the invention, it is to be understood.
' that the invention is not limited thereto, but
that various changes in the minor details of construction, proportion andarraiigenfent of parts may be resorted to if desired Without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is? In a level a body having anarcuate open= ing extended transversely of the body and entirely through the same, the said body having a second opening extending through the body at right angles to the arcuate opening to provide a pocket having one end in ters'ect-in'g the arcuate opening, a shaft extendlng' transversely through the body and pocket and being concentric with the arouate open ng, arcuate metallic plates secured to the edgesdefining said arcuate opening,
van indicator comprising a finger pivoted in- LEDVIN F. NORDLI'NG.
