CHARLES E. BANKS, OF WILKINSBURG, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL R, DAVIS, 01? PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
Application filed June 27, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E'Bamss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkinsburg, Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy, and the primary object of the same is to provlde a simple and readily operative dev ce of an amusing and patriotic character involving certain movements of parts that will create the interest of both the operator and observer. A further object of the invention is to provide a toy which is operated by blowing therein and producing an air pressure that will first act to set certain of the parts, figures or emblems in position for rotating operation through the medium of an actuator which is subsequently set in motion by liberating the air under pressure thereto, the actuator creating an air current for op erating the remaining rotative or movable parts, figures or emblems and of itself adding to the pleasing appearance of the toy during actuation.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the'drawing:
Figure 1 represents a side elevationof a toy embodying the features of the invention.
Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal vertical section of the toy.
Fig. 3 represents a front elevation thereof.
The numeral 5 designates an elongated holder which is preferably formed of wood and cylindrical in contour, said holderbeing disposed in horizontal position relatively to the remaining parts of the toy and having a bore 6 centrally formed therein and extending partially therethrough to provide an air passage, the bore 6 continuing through the holder at one end which is reduced and suitably shaped to form a mouthpiece 7 Inter secting the bore 6 at right angles adjacent to the front end of the holder 5 is an enlarged bore 8 in the upper portion of which the lower end of a vertical metal tube 9 is secured, the upper end of the tube being closed by a cap 10 having a central opening 11 therein. The side of the tube near the Specification of Letters Patent.

upper end also has an outlet or vent 12 for a purpose which will be presently explained. A plunger 13 is movably mounted in the tube 9 and snugly fits the latter so as to provide an air-tight engagement therewith but at the same time is free to slide or move vertically through the tube. Connected to the plunger 13 is a wire or rod 14: of suitable cross-sectional dimensions to give it ample rigidity to serve as a support and operating means. the wire or rod 14 serving as a connector and is intermediately bent,as at 15, to provide a return member 16 thereof which extends partially downwardly over the tube exteriorly of the latter when the parts are in normal position. The member 16 has a figure 17 representing Uncle Sam lsecured thereto and on said member above this figure is a representation of the national emblem or flag 18 which is given a waving appearance. The figure 17 and the emblem or flag 18 are preferably constructed of sheet metal and suitably colored to reproduce the characteristics of a figure of Uncle Sam and show the stars and stripes of the emblem or flag 18. The plunger 13 while fitting close enough in the tube 9 to be acted upon by the air ressure created by the operator is free to rotate within the tube, the fitting of the said plunger being only to such a de gree of tightness relatively to the tube as to effect a vertical or rising movement of the plunger in the tube under air pressure. "Extending outwardly from the tube 9 at a suitable distance below the vent 12 is an angular bracket arm 19 with an outer bent extremity 19" in which a short spindle 19 is disposed andon which abladed 0r pin wheel 20 is mounted and operative throughthe medium of the air liberated under pressure through the vent 12, said bladed or pin wheel 20 serving also as a motor wheel to create a current of air under pressure for rotating the figure 17 and the emblem or flag 18 when the latter are raised above the upper end of the tube 9. The inner end of the bracket arm 19 is rovided with a clamp 19 which is fitted over and suitably secured to the tube 9.
In the operation of the improved toy, the reduced or mouthpiece end 7 is placed within the mouth of the operator and air is blown through the passage 6 and through the intersecting passage 8 into the tube 9 against the plunger 13, and the latter is gradually forced upwardly Within the tube. The upward movement of the plunger uniformly raises the member 16 and the figure 17 and emblem or flag 18, the bladed or pin wheel 20 remaining "inactive until the plunger 13 has passed above the vent 12, and at such time the figure 17 and emblem or flag 18 will be at'such elevation above the upper end 10 of the tube 9 as to be free to rotate about the upper end of the tube. The air under pressure liberated through the vent 12 will strike the blades of the Wheel 20 and rapidly rotate the latter, and the air current thus produced will set up a rotation of the figure 17 and emblem or flag 18, such actuation of the bladed wheel 20 and the figure and emblem or flag continuing as long as air is forced through the passages 6 and 8 and into the tube 9 against the plunger. When the operator ceases to blow into the passage 6 of the holder-5, the plunger 13, wire or rod 14, and the figure l7 and emblem or flag 18 have sufficient Weight to gravitate to normal position, as shown by Fig. 1. It will be understood that the figure 17 and emblem or flag 18 may be maintained in elevated position without rotation by the operator first fully filling the air passages and the tube 9 with air and maintaining the same under pressure by placing the tongu as a closing means against the entrance end of the passage 6 which is exposed through the reduced end or mouthpiece 7 of the holder 5. Various amusing movements of the figure 17 and emblem or flag 18 may be produced by moditying the air pressure, such for instance as causing the said figure and emblem or flag to risepart Way and be allowed to suddenly fall, and other movements that may be acquired by practice on the part of the operator.
The improved toy will be found exceptionally interesting in its operation and is comparatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.
I claim as my invention:
1. A' toy of the class specified comprising a holder Witlr air passages therein, a tube connected to the holder having an outlet vent and also communicating with the air passages,- a plunger in the tube provided Copies of this patent may be obtained. for

2. A toy of the class specified comprising a holder having communicating air passages therein, a tube secured to the holder and opening into one of the air passages, the tube having an air vent near one end and also provided with a plunger, figure and emblem devices exterior of the tube and connected to and movable with the plunger, and a bladed wheel held by the tube in operative relation to the air vent and serving to rotate the figure and emblem devices.
8. A toy of the class specified comprising secured to the holder and in communication with the air passages, the tube being provided with a plunger, and figure and emblem devices exterior of the tube and connected to and movable with the plunger.
1. A toy of the class described having tubular means for conveying air under pressure, a shiftable plunger in a part of said tubular mean operated by the air under pressure, exteriorly positioned figure and emblem devices connected to and movable with said shittable plunger and a bladed member held on a portion of the tubular means and serving to rotate the figure and emblem devices.
5. A toy of the class specified comprising I a holder having tubular means for conveymg air under pressure and a shiftable plunger in a part of said tubular means, figure a holder with air passages therein, a tube and m lem devices connected to and IIl'OV- ab-le with the shiftable device, and auxiliary air current generating means actuated by the air under pressure when the figure and emblem devices have been projected for giving a rotary movement to the said figure and emblem devices.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
