HENRY C. 'MINNS, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.-
mnsrrixre DEVICE non. THE IGNITION sYsrEMs or INTERNAL-COMBUSTION Morons.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HnNRr C. MINNs, a resident of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario,v Canada, a-
subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 'mentsin Testing Devices for the Ignition Systems of Internal-Combustion Motors, of
which the following is a specification.
Intuning up an internal combustion motor, it is Important to ascertain whether i conditions are right in the circuits of the electric ignition system and whether .the
' spark plugs themselves are in proper-condi- 15 It is my object therefore to devise means for exam1ning,fwhen the motor is turned over, whether. a suitable sparking current ping and whether anly given spark plug is nctioning proper 2 I attain my object by providing aholder in which .a spark. plug may be removably held,.which holder is provided with a stem adapted to fit into the opening for-the spark plug in the combustion chamber of the cylinder, whereby the spark plug is held in po-.
sition for inspectionand in electrical connection with the metal o f the cylinder.
The device is hereinafter more specifically described and illustrate: in-the accompanyin drawingsLirIwhichigure 1 is 'a front elevation, partly broken away, of the device in position in the head of a cylinderof an internal combustion motor with the spark plug in position; and
Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same with the spark plug in position.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the i The main parts of the device are a holder for a spark plug and a stem adapted to fit the s ark plug opening in the combustioncham er in the cylinder of an internal combustion motor. In the drawings the stem 1 is shownas a plug adapted tov screw into bird of the spark plug may be inserted as y Preferably the lower side of theshown. opening is V-shaped as shown and means are provided opposite the -V-shaped side to press Specification of Letters Patent. 1 P ato -the spark plug against thelower side of the opening. A three point contact is thusob-.

tained which will permit of spark plugs of varying diameters being heldin position.
' Preferably the frame 2 is double, that is it has spaced sides 4 so that-the V-shaped V side of the opening presents pairs of relatively thin edges adapted to engage in the I I threads of the body of the spark plug, which increases the security of the holder. Prefer-. ably the spark plug is pressed toward the V- shaped side of theopening by means of'a lever 5-, which is pivoted at 6 between the sides 4 of the frame. A threaded rod 7 is pivotally connectedat 8 between. the sides 4 and extends up through a hole formed in the lever 5. A nut 9 screwed on the up er end of the rod bears against the upper side of the lever 5. A coil spring 10 is fitted on the rod 7 and engages the under side'of the-lever 5. It is evident from this construction that the lever may. be actuated to clamp a spark plug by rotating the nut 9, and that when the nut is unscrewed the coil sprin 10 will disenga e the lever from the spar plug.
- en a spark plug is held in position in one of these holders and the engine turned over, it becomes quite easy to ascertain whether proper current is flowing to the spark plugand whether the spark plug itv self is functioning properly, and if not, to
make any necessary tests to ascertain where the trouble lies.
Preferably with a four cylinder engine all spark plugs are removed and set up in holders. With motors having a larger number of cylinders, any arrangement may be adopted to suit the convenience of the operator.

right angles to the axis of a spark plug carried by the holder and adapted to fit the spark plug opening of the cylinder of an internal combustion motor.
plug opening of the cylin-.
3. A holder adapted to receive and'hold a spark plug and provided with a stem threaded to fit the spark plug opening of the cylinder of an internal combustion motor.
4. A spark plug holder comprising a stem' adapted to fit the spark plug opening of the adapted to lit the spark plug opening of the cylinder of an internal combustion motor;
a frame connected to the stem having an opening therein to receive a spark plug, said opening being .V-shaped at one side;
and a movable part adapted to secure aspark plug in said openmg, said movable part being located opposite to the V-shaped side.
6. A spark plug holder comprising a stem adapted to fit the spark plug opening of the cylinder of an internal combustion motoi;
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the wernngton, 11.6.
a double frame connected to the stem having an opening therein to receive a spark plug; and a movable part pivoted between t e parts of the frame adapted to secure a spark plug in said opening. I
7. A spark plug holder comprising a stem adapted to fit the spark plug opening of the cylinder of an internal combustion motor a double frame'connected to the stem having.
an opening therein to receive a spark plug; a movable part pivoted between'th parts of the frame, screw means adapted to actuate the movable part to secure a spark plug in the opening; and a spring tending to move the movable art to release the spark plug. Signed at oronto, Canada, this 15th dag;
