Description

J. H. MARQUARDT. COMBINED SPARK PLUG HOLDER AND TESTER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 8, 1920.

' drawings,
plugs in their Combined Spark-Plug and I do hereby declare that the following thereby thegdevice, which may COMBINED SPARK-PLU Application filed May, 8,
To all whom it may concern c it known thatI, 'JULIUs MAR-' QUARDT, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Lombard, in the county of invented Dupage and State of Illinois, have certain new and useful Improvements in Holders and Testers;
is a full, clear, and exact description ther of, reference being had to the accompanying and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a novel spark plug tester and carrier'for use on explosion engines of that type embodying in its igni tion system spark or ignition plugs that are electrically operated to lire the compressed gaseous fuel in the engine cylinders, and relates more same time securely fastened to a fixed part of the motor, sothat be termed a rack, may be securely fixed to a part of the motor whichis adjacent to the spark operative positions and, therefore, readily accessible to thenormal spark plug positions to enable plugs to be readily removed from the the rack and vice versa, and which also, by reason of its grounded connection with one side of the ignition circuit through the engine frame, furnishes means to support a spark plug or plugs, so that the same may be tested for faults before being applied to the cylinders. 7
It is the experience of users of explosion engines, and particularly explosion engines used on motor driven vehicles that-spark or ignition plugs are commonly carried in receptacles such as tool boxes, bags, and the like, where the parts thereof that need to be delicately adjusted are subject to mal-adjustment and where the porcelain parts are subject to checks, so that, in the experience of the average motor driven vehicle driver, the
defects in spark plugs have been foundto be largely due to the fact that no special place is provided to safely carry the same against the adverse conditions mentioned. Therefore, in many instances a new spark plug becomes defective' or mal-adjusted before it has ever been applied to the engine cylinder.
It is also the experience of motor driven vehicle drivers that the testing of plugs Specification of Letters Patent;

port.
I have shown in the drawings one known type of explosion motor (the Ford type) to which my invention is applied, and it is understood that when adapting it to other types of explosionmotors, the device ma assume structurally different forms and difg in side elevation my novel plug carrier and tester. 1g. 2 is a plan view of the principal parts shown inFig, 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view detached from the other parts.
As shown in thedrawings, l0 designates the engine casing or housing, which, known forms of'explosion motors, constitutes the ground for one side of the ignition circuit, the spark plugs being grounded thereto by direct contactwith the metal part of the frame or housing. 7
ll designates as a whole the combined tester and holder. As herein shown, it takes t e general form of an inverted U, embracing a holder member 12, down-turned legs 13, 13, and outwardly extending feet 14, let, generally at right angles "to the legs and in planes parallel to the holder portion 12.
portion l2'is pierced with a series of openings 15, which openings are threaded and said openings are of a diameter and the threads are so cut as to receive andproperly engage the standard threads of the spark plugs 1 the spark plugs engagof the holder mg the threaded openings 15 in the manner Patented July 5, i921.

length that bolt openings 18 in the. feet 14 of the rack register wit be fastened to the engine structure by standard means'ready at hand and without the necessity of providing other means than the holder or rack such as is to the engine cylinder, it being convenient to temporarily plce the ,defective and re-v same. It will also be obof carrying the or rack is included in one side tion circuit, it becomes practica le to readily test a spark or ignition plug when supported in the rack by merely applying a contact the plug, which contact part of is connected with the other side of the circuit. This operation can be readily effected person testing or repla'cby one hand of the and by reason of the fact that the plugs are securely held in position during such testing, much time is saved and the accuracy of thetestis certain.
While the rack or h the boltslT, so that so that when it becomes ber provided with are adapted of the fact that said holder of the igniholder is shown as in-l serted'into one side of the ignition circuit by being attached to thegrounded side, embodying the engine casing, it will be understood that'f neither side of said circuit be grounded, the said holder or rack may be otherwise-included in one side ofthe ignition circuit. i l
p I claim as my inventionz' 7 1. A combined spark plug carrier and test rack, embracing a current conducting member provided with a series of through openings to receive the threaded portions of the spark'plug, and means whereby said carrier is adapted to be normally fastened to an engine case to'be'thereby inserted of the ignition circuit of an explosion motor.
inone 81(16 2. -A combined spark plug'carrier and test' i rack, comprising a current conductingmema; plurality of spaced threaded openings,
the frameof an explosion motor.
3; In combination with an explosion motor and its spark plugs, of a combined cur: rent conducting carrier and tester for spark alu s fixed to the rounded en ine housinn 23 i h 3 b adjacent to the normal operating positions of the'spark plugs, and provided with a series of spaced,,threaded openings adapted to plugs. 1 g
