Application filed January 10, 1918. Serial No. 21 1,7241;
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CONRAD G. YOUNG, citizen of the United States, residing at Twin, in the county of Clallam and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hosiery, of which-the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hosiery as socks, stockings and the like and comfortable, snug fitting seek or stocking that may be turned on the foot of the wearer .to present new wearing surfaces for the heel and sole of the foot'thereby increasing the life of such sock or stocking.
The novel shape and form herein disclosed is particularly well adapted for heavy is to provide a socks that are worn by persons that do a great deal of walking but it will be understood that any class of hosiery may be ad vantageously constructed in accordance with my invention.
It is a well known fact that the heel of a sock or stockingis subjected to greater wear than the other parts thereof, and is usually the first. part to wear out. It is the object of my invention to provide a sock of symmetrical shape so that it may be worn with different portions thereof under the sole and heel of the wearer to thereby distribute the wear.
This is accomplished by knitting or otherwise forming the sock in the shape of a tubular bag open at ,one, end and having a Referring to the/drawings throughout which like referencenumerals designate like parts the numeral5 designates the foot portion and 6 designates the leg or upper por tion of a sock.
The foot portion 5 and leg portion 6 are of the usual circular or tubular shape and are connected with each other by a heel portion --7 of larger diameter than either the leg or foot portions.
The leg, heel and foot portions are disposed in alinement with each other so that they present substantially the appearance of asymmetrical leg having an enlargement or fullness at the heel portion.
If the sock is knit as shown in the drawings, the enlarged heel portion 7 may be formed by knitting in guss'ets, as indicated at the position 8 at a plurality of points around the heel portion thereby giving the heel portion the desired fullness.
To secure a .etter fit around th-= ankle and-prevent wrinkling and folding of the enlarged heel portion 7 on the sides and top of the foot I have caused that part of the 35 rounded toe portion at the other end and a heel and with a section of slightly reduced' diameter just above the enlarged heel por tion that makes the sock or stocking fit closely about the ankle.
The enlargement of the sock'at the location of the heel ives the necessary room for the heel and an lo .and aifords a better and 45 more comfortable fit than would be afforded by a straight sock that did not have the enlarged portion at the location of the heel.
In the drawings the figure is a view in elevation illustrating a sock constructed in 50 accordance with my invention as it might appear when spread out on a flat surface, the top of the sock beingshown as folded.
above the heel to be le ortion 6 just as indinarrowed or reduced in diameter cated at 9.
In use the sock is placed on the foot in any position, the enlarged portion 7 forming a heel regardless of the position in which the sock is turned and the elasticity of the yarn allowing the leg portion to be drawn into a position substantially at right angles to the foot portion so that the sock will fit snugly about the ankle without wrinkling or folding.
Since the sock is symmetrical it may be put on in a different position each day to bring a difi'erent part of the sock under the foot of the wearer and thereby insure equal wear at all points around the circumference ofthe foot portion oflthe sock orit may be worn in one position until the heel or foot portion shows signs of wearing out and may 8 asshown in the drawings.
What I claim is: osition in which the hose is Worn and the A hose of the class described comprising hose snugly and smoothly fits the foot Witha footportion having a leg portion formed O t wrinkling or folding at the instep. in prolongation thereof, and a'plurality of In Witness whereof, I here-unto subscribe 5 gussets in the hose at the point of connecmy name this 2nd. day of January A. tion of the foot portion with the le portion 1918. whereby aheel pocketis provide in any, CONRAD G. YQUNG.
