To all whom t may concern.- -I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. GIBBoNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upsetting-Dies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to up-setting dies which are adapted for use in up-setting the opposite ends of lead or other metal bushings fo'r armor plate and similar sheets of metal.
vOne of the objects of my invention is to provide means whereby the' opposing dies may be readily and accurately centered with respect to each other.
Another object of my invention is to proyvide up-setting dies for up-setting relatively thick, heavy bushings of metal, such as lead, which are adapted to be operated manually. l
Al further object of my invention is to provide up-setting dies by the employment of which the opposing ends of short tubular sections of pipe may be expanded and turned laterally against the adjacent surrounding surfaces of: the sides of the plate in the openings of which the bushings are secured.
j Other objects and advantages of my invention will be particularly referred to and pointed out in the detailed description thereof which follows in thisspecication, or will be apparent from such description.
In order that my invention vmay be readily understood and fully comprehended and ,its practical advantagesy appreciated, reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated two modified constructions of up-setting dies embodying my invention.
In the said drawing:

Fig. 2 is a similar view 'of a die adapted for coperation with the die shown in Fig.- 1;
Fig. 3 is a view partly in longitudinal section and partly in side elevation of the two dies in working relation with respect .to each `other upon opposite sides of a plate and showing the same in opposing operative position after having been employed to @Jup-set the opposite ends of a bushing in an opening through said plate; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 3, of a modification, both dies, however, being shown in partial vlongitudinal section.
Referring to the. drawing 1 designates what may be described as the body of one member of an up-setting die having a working face or surface comprising a projection 2 rising from the central portion of a relatively wide surface 3. The surface of the projecting portion 2 is connected with the flat surface 3 by an inclined, annular,
beveled surface portion 4. The die also comprises a handle or shank portion 5 which, when the dies are being used, is adapted to be held inthe hands of an operator.
The inner or headedend ofthe die is provided with a central longitudinally eX- tending centering opening 6, the outer surrounding edges of which are beveled as inl dicated at 7. The centering opening 6 is isv adapted to receive the centering pin 10 which projects` from the end of a boss 11l which rises from the flat surface l2 ofthe head 14 of a coperating die member. The boss 411 is connected 0r joined with the relatively large flat surface 12 by means of an annular inclined or beveled surface 15. The head 14 is provided with a handle or shank portion 17 similar to the handle 'referred to and forming a part of the previously described die member. I
In Fig. 4 the construction is the same as that illustrated in Figs.v 1, 2 and 3, except that the bosses 2 and 1l are surrounded by annular grooves 20 which, in cross section, are semi-circular as shown. These grooves are formed in the relatively large flat surfaces 3 and l2. The outer-surfaces of the bosses 2 and ll in Fig. 4 merge into the semi-circular surface of the groovesy 20, as is clearly shown. In both Figs. 3 and 4, 21 designates a plate having an opening 22 eX- tending therethrough and 24 designates a bushing in said opening Said bushing preferably consists of lead, although other suitable material may be employed to form .such bushing. In forming the bushing, a section., of tube consisting of the material de sired, such as lead, is placed in position over the projecting centering pin 10. and boss 1l, and is then inserted through an opening 22.- After' having been so inserted,

the opposing cooperating die member is placed in position, with the boss Q projecting into the projecting end or the tubular member or section which has been inserted through the opening 22 in the plate 2l to the opposite side ot' the latter. lt Will be understood that the opposite ends of the section of tube or pipe are straight or square.
Having been thus positioned, the flat lianges 25 are formed as shown in Fig. 3, or the circular `flange-like portions 26 are formed as shown in Fig. Li, by the application of torce in any preferred manner to the opposing die members. Such torce may be applied by means ot a hammer or mallet. lWhen it is applied one of the die members should be held tirmly in the hand, say the die member comprising the parts l and 5,. vvhile by striking upon the outer end or the handle 1'( with the hammer or mallet, the latter' is driven against the directly opposing end or the sect-ion of tube which tits over the boss ll. Owing to the pressure exerted against the opposing ends ot the section oi tube by means of the cooperating die head l the opposing 'ends of the section oif tube are expanded 'to ormeither a dat flange as shown at 25 in lig. 3, or a circular flangelilre portion as shown at 26 in Fig. l. The form or shape of the Harige depends upon the character or the expanding surfaces or the coperating upsetting dies. rEhe torni of bushing shown in S is lrnoivn as a half crown bushing, While that shown in Fig. is known as a Whole crown bushing.
The advantage or" having a bushing ot relatively sott metal such as lead in an opening through a steel plate, the said bushing having rounded edges as shovvn in Figs. 3 and -i ot the drawings is that it it should be necessary to draw or pull a rope or cor-d or electric cable through the said opening such rope or cord or electric cable would not be frayed or cut as it would be if it vvere drawn through the opening with the sharp corners as shovvn Without the presence of the bushings of sott metal with rounded edges at the opposite ends ot" the opening therethrough. i
By reason or the presence of the centering opening 6 and the cooperating centering pin l0, the opposing cooperating rip-setting parts readily, quickly and accurately' position and seat themselves With respect to each other in an opening which is being provided with a bushing as above described.

2. lip-setting dies for :torming bushings ot soit metal in openings through metal plate. the said dies each comprising a rela tively large'tiat surface and a boss rising from said surface, the saidlarge flat surface merging into the surface of said boss by an inclined, curvilinear', annular surface, one of the said dies having a central centering opening and the other of said dies having a centering pin projecting trom the center of its boss, said pin being adapted to enter the said centering opening, substantially as described.
3.,Upsetting dies adapted tor the formation or bushings of relatively sort metal in openings through plates of relatively hard material. the said dies each comprising a head having a handle or shank portion ei;- tending outwardly therefrom and each having a relatively large dat surface upon its inner end, and a boss rising from the center oit each ot said surfaces, each ot said dies being provided with an annular, inclined, curvilinear surface intermediate the said relatively large surface and the cylindrical surface or the said bosses and one of the said dies having a centering, longitudinally extending opening therein and the other of said. dies having a centrally situated. inwardly extending centering pin adapted to enter the said centering opening, substantially as described.
l. ln an upsetting die, the combination ot two die members, each of Which is provided at its inner operative end ivith in vfardly project-ing bosses adapted to enter the opposite ends ot a section of tube, one or the saai dies being provided Vwith a centering, longitudinally extending opening, terminating at i s inner end in the center oit the boss or the said die, and the other or said dies being provided with a centering pin extending inwardly e irom the center of the boss ot' said die and the boss of each or saiddies being provided with means at the base thereof tor expanding and forming flanges upon the opposite ends ot said section or tube upon the application 'of torce applied to said dies, which force is applied longitudinally thereof and in opposing directions, tending to cause the said dies to approach each other.
