To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILBUR G. BRALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Towanda, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Bolt-Cutters, of which the followingisy a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawing.
The present inventiony has reference vgenerally to improvement in that kclass of inventions known as metal cutting and'punching and more particularly relates 'to a nut splitter or bolt cutter.
This invention has for its primary object to provide a device'of the above character designed for readily splitting nuts so as to easily remove them from bolts when they cannot be removed by the employment of a wrench, and in addition obviating the inconvenience `of using va chisel or hammer with the possibility of injuring the hands.
More particularly, the invention embraces the provision of a device of the above character wherein they construction permits of a quick adjusting of the jaws into a biting or cutting engagementl with aA nut.
It is the more specific obj ect of this inveny tion to provide a nut-splitter and boltcutter wherein common means is provided for guiding the movable jaw, for supporting the object being acted upon and for supporting the adjusting means of the jaws.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the eiiiciency high. v
Other improvements and' novel details in 'the construction and arrangement ofthe various parts of the apparatus will be brought out morein detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without. departing from the principle of operation of thevarious parte.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in whichz Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine;

Similar characters of reference are employed in all the described views, to indicate corresponding parts. Referring now more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a stationary jaw inthe present instance consisting of a straight body 1, formed of suitable metal the inner surface adjacent to the upper end of which is provided with an inwardly extending recess 2, for a purwhich will presently appear. Likewise, the lower end of'the Vbody is reduced on opposite sides as indicated by numeral 3.
Coperating with the stationary body is a movable jaw indicated in this entirety by the numeral 4: and consisting of a prismatic body formed of metal the horizontal portion 5 thereof being bifurcated at its outer end to provide spaced arms` 6'v whichV are arabout the reduced end 3 of the jaw l, and pivot-ally connected thereto through the instrumentality of the bolt 7. T he inner surface of the vertical portion 8 of the movable jaw is provided with a recess 9 adjacent its outer end at a point substantially opposite the recess 2.
Suitable cutting means are now employed and in the present instance consist of knife dies 10. These dies consist of blade portions 11 from the rear surfaces of which project Shanks 12 removably seated in the sockets 2 and 9 so thatthe cutting edges will be arranged toward each other as indicated in the drawings.
With a view toward providing improved means for guiding the movement of the removable aw l and for serving as a support for the nut 13 to facilitate the cutting and splitting of the same, the yoke `indicated in its entirety by the numeral ll is employed. This yoke is forme-d from a single piece of strap metal and is bent into U-shaped configuration forming a vertex 15 having a threaded opening 16 therein. Arms 16-17 continue from the opposite sides of the vertex and are arranged in close relation with th opposite sides of the jaw Il and from opposite sides of the jaw 1 the terminals of the arms 17 of the yoke being pivotally connected to the jaw 1 through the instrumentality of suitable fastening device 18 at a point in proximity to the adjacent knife die 10. In order to adjust the aws relatively to each other, an adjusting screw 19 is adjustably mounted in the threaded opening 16 and is also adjustable through the threaded bore 20 of the block 21 seated between the arms 17 adjacent the vertex 15. A head 22 is formed in the end of the bolt and is adapted to be engaged by a wrench so that the inner end of the bolt may be adjusted between the arms and against the vertical portion 8 of the movable jaw 4 so as to swing the movable jaw toward the stationary aw in order that the knife dies 10 will exert a biting and cutting action on the nut 13 positioned therebetween so as to split the nut and allow the ready removal thereof.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, and it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my invention7 what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters vPatent is In a device as described, in combination, a stationary and a movable j aw, the stationary jaw being a straight bar while the movable jaw is an L-shaped bar, one arm of said movable aw being pivotally connected to the inner end of the fixed aw, a guide member having a pair of side arms secured at one end to said fixed jaw short of its outer end7 a crosspartition formed between the side arms of said guide member, a screw-shank threaded into said guide member and into said partition, the other arm of said L-sha ed jaw projecting between the side arms of said guide member immediately vin front of said partition, the' free end of the threaded shank adapted to engage said L-shaped jaw in order to force the same toward the iXed jaw, and cutter members each consisting of a stub and a V-shaped blade; each of said jaws at their outer ends being provided with a recess in which the stubs of said cutter members are received.
