PICK.
APPLICATION FILED 061216. 1918.

THOMAS F. BIRD, OF WILKES-BARBIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed October 16, 1918. Serial No, 258,447.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. BIRD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mine picks, and an object of the invention is to provide a pick construction, which will facilitate the attaching of the blade or head to the handle of the pick, and provide a secure connection between the handle and blade, eliminating any liability of disconnection of these members, during the use of the pick and also to provide, a connection structure which includes a pair of oppositely beveled wedge members, one of which is provided with a concaved recess adapted to receive the convex lower surface of the other wedge, to allow the proper positioning of the wedge to securely wedge or connect the pick head or blade to the handle, and prevent any movement of the head with respect to the handle, in case the inner edge of the blade is not parallel with the outer edge thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a pick structure as specified, means whereby pick heads of various widths through their major thicknesses may be attached to the handle without necessitating alteration of either the head, handle or the wedged members. I I
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in the connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawingr Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved pick.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the handle and ferrule carried thereby illustrating the manner of connecting the pick blade to the handle.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the handle, pick head and mechanism for connecting them, taken at right angle to the section illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating the adaptability of the connecting wedge to pick heads having their inner and outer edges unparallel, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the wedge members used in the pick structure.
Referring more particularly to the draw- 7 ing, 1 indicates the pick handle which has a head or ferrule 2 mounted upon the outer end thereof which head or ferrule 2 is provided with a socket opening 3 which receives the end of the pick handle 1 and the transverse opening 4 through which the blade 5 of the pick extends. These openmgs may have communication with each other if desired, as shown in the drawing. The blade 5 of the pick has the usual workmg points 6 formed upon its ends and its back intermediate the points 6 is Provided with a recess 7 equidistant of each end in which is seated the outer cross-piece 8 of the ferrule or head 2. When the cross-piece 8 is seated in the recess 7, the outer face of said'cross-piece lies flush with the outer surface of the blade 5.
A pair of wedge members 9 and 10 are employed for securely wedging the blade 5 in the transverse socket or opening 4 of the head 2. The wedge 9 has its outer surface flat and its inner surface convex, it being provided with a plurality of spaced recesses 11 which are adapted to receive the enlarged head 12 of the locking member 13. The locking member 13 is pivotally connected as shown at 14: to a depending ear 15 formed upon the wedge block 10 for locking the wedge blocks 9 and 10 to prevent longitudinal movement of the wedge 9 out of the wedging position. The wedge block 10 is provided with a concave recess 16 in its upper surface which is adapted to receive the convex side of the wedge block 9, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, thus when the inner side of the pick head 2 is angled, or cut slanting, as shown in Fig. 4, or in case the outer and inner edges of the pick blade are not parallel, the wedge 9 may move to properly engage the blade 5 for securely wedging the same in position, preventing any movement whatever of the blade 5 with respect to the handle 1, and eliminating the necessity of straightening the sides or edges of the blade 5 prior to its insertion through the opening 4 of the head secure the blade in place and prevent movement thereof independently of the handle 1.
Changes in details may be made Without departing from the spirit of this invention, but:
I claim:
1. In a mine pick structure, the combina tion, of a handle, a head carried by the handle and provided With atransverse bore, a blade extending through said bore, a pair of Wedge members extending through said bore in opposed relation to each other, one of said Wedge members engaging the inner edge of said blade and provided with a plurality of spaced recesses, the other of said Wedge members engaging the outer face of said first named Wedge member, an ear formed upon said last mentioned Wedge member, a locking pawl pivotally carried by said car and adapted for engagement With one of said recesses.
2. In a mine pick structure, the combination, of a handle, a head carried by the handle and provided with a transverse bore, pick blade extending through said bore, a pair of Wedge members extending through said bore in opposeo relation to each other, one of said. Wedge members having a flat outer face and a convex inner face, said Wedge member provided with a plurality of spaced recesses in its convex face, said fiat face adapted for facial abutment vvith the inner edge of said pick blade, the other of said Wedges being provided with a concave face for receiving therein portion of the convex face of said first named wedge, and a locking paivl pivotally carried by said second named Wedge for engagement in one of said recesses.
3. in a mine pick structure, the combination, of a handle, a head carried by the ban- Copies of this patent may be obtained for dle and provided with a transverse bore, a pick blade extending through said bore, a Wedge member having a flat outer surface adapted for facial abutment against a portion of the inner edge of said pick blade and havng an inner convexly curved face, a second \vedge member carried by said head and positioned in opposed relation to said first mentioned wedge member, said second Wedge member provided with a substantially semi-circular concave recess in its outer face for receivin a portion of the convex face of said first Wedge member to permitthe fiat face of the first \vedge member to be positioned at an angle other than parallel to the fiat face of the second wedge member.
4:. In a mine pick structure, the combination, of a handle, a head carried by the handle and provided with a transverse bore, a pick blade extending through said bore, a Wedge member having a fiat outer surface adapted for facial abutment against a portion of the inner edge of said pick blade and having an inner convexly curved face, a second Wedge member carried by said head and positioned in opposed relation to said first mentioned Wedge member, said second Wedge member provided with a substantially semicircular concave recess in its outer face for receiving a portion of the convex face of said first viedge member to permit the flat face of th first Wedge member to e positioned at an angle and other than parallel to the fiat face of tee second Wedge member, said pick blade provided with a recess in its outer edge intermediate its end, a portion of said head adapted to engage in said recess for co-action with said Wedges to securely lock the pick blade to said handle.
