V nn'rnunir. H onDswonTI-I, or DETROIT, nrenieaiv, assrsivon crows-HALF To 7 cnnrsrmn SCHNEIDER, or nnrnorr, MICHIGAN. e
oovEn-HoLnER'Fon JARS.
of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Cover-I-Iolde1's for Jars, and declare the following to be a run, clear, and exact description of the same,
s peeiffication. t Thisinventiorfrelates to cover-holders for such as willenableothers skilled in the art to which it pertains to'make" and use'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings; which form a part" of this jars ofvar-ious types, particularly of use in holdingthecovers of jars finm'ed of fragile material as ;-glass, etc. In jars of fragile material the cover 1s not ordinarllyt secured in {hinged relation with the jar, and in use the cover is often misplaced or the jar left open,
and also in handling a loose cover the possi loiii'ty of accident is much greater than if the l -co'verwere secured inhingcd relation therer to. The primary object or" this invention is a holderoli cheapiform readily applied to a jarand'having a member adapted to bindinglyengage the neck of the jar and another member in hinged relation with the. first V named member and adaptedto bindingly' engage the oover, the form being such that the cover when fully opened issupported in such mannerthat the'for'ee of gravity tends V to hold the coverfin the open position.
In the majority of instances, jars such. as
candy and tobacco jars and-the like have a' neck or rim portionaboutwhich one of, these members maybe secured, and an oloject of invention is: acover providedlwith a circumferential groove adapted to recerve a holder of the character mentioned, and an additional object ofthe invention resideszin the peculiararrangement of the hinged con 7 {nection 'and' the body member whereby the relative position of the two members may be adjusted and the device thus adapted for use with- 'jarshavi'ng necks ozt, various heights. A further object of the 'invention'is a body member adapted to be secured about the neck a of the jar r'by' a binding screw and having a member in pivotal tenses therewith to Specification of L etters Patent.
fgether; The said parallel side members are mentioned comprising abody member and a" cover member eachit'ormed of a single piece of wire adapted to binding-ly'engage about the cover and'j ar respectively, the two mem- V hers being pivotally connected and the body member providing asupport' for the cover member when turned toopen position. 7 These and other objects and novel features ofthe invention arehereinafter more fully, de-

scribed and claimedand shown in the accom- V panying drawings which 7 Figured 1s a side elevatlon'of a ar provention.
vided with a cover holder embodyingmy in Fig.2 is-a' f plan view of the bodymenrber 7 showing the pivotally' mounted device and meansof-securing the cover member thereto; 7
ber showing the means employed to bin'dingly-se'cure the same aboutthe cover.
7 F 3 isa detail of part of the cover imem- Similar characters refer to similar parts 7 throughout the drawing and specification,
The-body member 1 is formed of a single piece of wireof the desired stifl'ne'ss and size in cross-section, the end portions 2 and3 of which are bent outwardly at an angle to'the circular part 1 parallel one to the other and apertured to receive a bolt 4;. 'On the bolt and between thetwo end portions 2 and'3' This spacer 5 may be of yais a spacer '5.
rio-us lengths to enable thefmemberl to be 7 drawn tightly about the neck of a'jar to adapt the'device for use with jars of various diameters.
Preferably, diametrically oppositethe end portions 2 and 3 the body portion is formed intoan outwardly" extending rectangular part 6, the two parallel side members {of V which are apeitured to receive a bolt? On '95 this bolt 7 is a ferrule or spacer 8 limiting the extent to which the parallel side members ofthe'rectangula-r portion may' be drawn toeaeh recessed to receive the lugs 9 andlO respectively of the pivot member 11 thus rtatably supported by the, side members. The ferrule Sis of a length to prevent the side members being drawn together to such extent as to, bind the pivot member 11 to such extent 7 as to prevent rotation thereof. It is also to be noted that by use of the bolt 7 and ferrule 8 the drawing together of the two ends 2 and 3 does not in any way bind the pivot member 11. The body member may thus be varied'in size by varying the length of the spacer 5 to accommodate jars having necks of various diameters without affecting the free movement of the pivot member 11. By varying the length of the spacers 8, the pivot member-11 may be so held as to move with greater or less freedom as may be required with covers of greater or less weight.
The cover 12 of the jar is preferably provided with a circumferential groove 13 formed in theedge thereof and adapted to receive the cover holder member 14. The
a member 14 is preferably formed of a single piece of wire and the two end portions 15 and 16 extend outwardly from the said ':member and each are bent downwardly in angle to the plane of the member. pivot member ll' is provided with apertures parallel relation substantially at a right a 17 and 18 through which the ends 15 and 16' of the cover member pass, and screws 19 and 20 are provided to secure the ends 15 and 16 in the pivot member. As may be seen ;in Fig. 2, the downwardly bent ends 15 and l6 are of such length'as to allow themember 1 and 14 to be relatively spaced horizontally to adapt the device for use with jars having necks and covers of various heights.- By thus adjusting the two members the device may be accuratelyfitted to anyparticular jar and thus the necessity of a variety of sizes for jars nearly equal in size is avoided.
The cross portion 21 of the rectangular part 6 of the body member provides a rest for the holder member 14 when turned to open position as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. Land the said portion 21 may be so positioned as to allow the cover to turn slightly more than a right angle to the body member in order that the cover will remain open by a force of gravity. 7
As before stated the device is adapted for use with ars-of various natures particularly those formed of fragile material. The two 3 binding screwsas indicated, the two parts may be securely fastened about the respectiveportions of the jar and cover, and thus the liability of breakage is reduced to a minimum. The device is also comparatively inexpensiveto manufacture and while the cover. is shown a being provided with a groove to receive the holder 14, the sald holder may be made of a size to bindingly engage beneath or about the knob 25.
' While both members are shown as being tion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesisz 1. A cover holder for a ar or vessel comprising a member formed of a single piece of material and shapedto engage about the neck of the jar, a binding screw for securing the same in place, said member being bent-to form a portion with parallel 'sides extending outwardly from the body, said sides being apertured contiguous .to the body of said member, abolt in said'apertures, a spacer on-the bolt between the two parallel sides, said, parallel sides each .be-
tured' to receive the saidends, and means for securing said ends to the pivotal member. a a e 2. A device offthe' character described piece of wire shapedto engage about the .neck or body of a;-jar or vessel,a binding ing recessed in adjacent faces, a member '90 the pivotally supported member being 'aper,
, comprising a memberformed of a single said sides being apertured contiguous to the body of said member,'a bolt intheapertures, a spacer on the bolt between the; sides llmiting the extent to which thesaid sides may be drawn together by the bolt, a hinge member pivotally supported by the sides,
'a cover'holder member formed of a single piece of wire, means for binding the member about the cover, said member having depending parallel ends and the hinge mem: I
ber having spaced apertures toreceivethe said ends, said ends also being ofa length to allow the cover member and body member to be vertically spaced to conform to the height of the neck of the jar and cover, and releasablemeans for securing said ends in place, the outwardly extending portion of the body memberproviding a rest. for the cover member when turnedto open position. A cover holder for a jar or vessel comprising a member formed of a single piece 7 of wire adapted to be secured, about the neck of the jar and havingan outwardly extending rectangular part, the parallel sides connected at the outer end by an integral portion, a spacer member between the 'said par allel parts, a member pivotally mounted on said parallel portions, a cover holder member adapted to be secured to the cover formed of a single piece of Wire having depending parts adjustably secured to the pivotal member, and means for binding the cover holder to the cover, the integral por tion connecting said parallel Sides provid- 10 ing a, rest for the cover holder When turned to open position.
In testimony whereof I sign this speeifiezttion.
