WILLIAMIYOUNG, or TORONTO, ONTARIO, oANAnA.
cHAsE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM YOUNG, a subject of the King of Great Britain, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Chase's,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in chases for printers use, and the object of my invention is to dispense with the ordinary furniture and quoins used in locking up. the matter in the chase received from a galley, and to substitute'therefor adjustable means permanently mounted within the chase so that there will be no possibility of misplacing any of the parts thereof.
My improvement comprises an adjustable frame mounted within the chase-frame, the
members of said frame being retained within said chase by any suitable means, preferably by means co-acting with a backing or floor with which the chase is provided, and pairs of perforated adjustable bars associated with the members of said frame so as to adjust the same around the type-matter (not shown) and lock the same firmly in place.
Figure 1 is a plan of my chase; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 2-2,
'Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken longitudinally on the line 3-3, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, like characters of reference refer to the same parts.
A is any suitable rectangular chase-frame. The adjustable frame mounted within, the frame A comprises longitudinal and transverse members B and O. The members B and G are identical in construction, and each comprises an upper plate D and a lower plate E, spaced apart, as shown clearly in Fig. 2,
for the major portion of their length. At
each end of either of the said plates, preferably the lower plate, is provided a lug F, against which the ends of the opposingplate rest. These said plates are secured together by any suitable fastening means such as G, which may be in the form of rivets or screws, if desired. In the disclosure shown, the upper plates B of the transverse members G, operate through the space H formed between the plates D and E of the longitudinal members B, and the plates E operate in the space I separating the plates B and D, of the transverse members C; This construction permits of the ready movement of said longitudinal andtransverse members while, at the 7 same time, it prevents the said members from Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed September 14, 1918. Serial No. 254,126.
the outer side of each longitudinal and trans.-
verse member is a pair of perforated plates J As will be'clearly seen upon referring to Fig. 1, the plates J extend through the space separating the longitudinal and transverse members to which they occupy an angular position. The inner ends K of the plates J are threaded to receive the threaded screws L, provided with the common head M. The screws. L are provided with right and left hand threads, as well as the inner ends K, and it is well-known that by turning the head'M, the plates J will be drawn together or forced apart. In communicating motion to the plates J overlapping each other, pins 2 or equivalent means are used and passing through an alined pair of the perforations 3 formed in said plates J. Without further description, it will be understood that the type-matter (not shown) is positioned with in the space 4:, and clamped firmly in place by means before described.
In case the chase be turned upside down, to prevent the adjustable frame from dropping thereout of, and also to prevent the said frame from becoming dislodged in res ect of the frame A, when the frame A is li ted up, I prefer to provide some means whereby, while the said frame is adjustably mounted within the frame A, it cannot be accidentally displaced therefrom. By providing the lower plate of each longitudinal and transverse member with a lip 5, to extend underneath the bars of the frame A, I prevent the adjustable frame dropping out of the frame A when the chase is turned upside down. By providing the backing or floor 6, when the frame A is lifted up, the frame therewithin will also be lifted up. Any suitable means may be employed to attach the backing or floor 6 to the frame A, as by means of ears 7, which are bent to overlap the corners of the frame A.
Various changes in construction may be made in that illustrated and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. The combination with a chase-frame, of an adjustable frame mounted therewithin comprising longitudinal and transverse interfitting members: a pair of alined perforated plates positioned adjacent the outer sides of said longitudinal and transverse members, and extending therethrough, the ends of said perforated plates overlapping each other;
7 removable'means couplingthe overlapping 7 adjacent-the outer sides'of saidlongitudinal perforated plates togethenon tl'l'e'ol'lti side of said adjustable frame, and a turn buckledevice co-acting with the inner opposed ends.
of said perforated plates.
2; The combination With'ch'as'e-frame," of
a floor therefor attached thereto; an adjustable frame mounted Within said chase-frame an'dabove said floor and'com-prising longi tudanal and transverse: interfitting menibers a pair? of 'alined' pcrforatedsplates positioned and transverse members; and extending therethrough, theendswof said perforated plates oi erlapping each other; removable V 7 means coupling the overlapping perforated projecting underneath; themembers of? said chaseeframey for :the purpose specified;
