To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. LEIN. wanna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inInternal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines and more particularly to an improved valve arrangement and means for operating the same for exhausting said engine, the object of the invention being to provide such an improved valve arrangement which is simple in construction and eflicient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The form of construction illustrated in I Figs. 1 to-5 inclusive, comprises a closed crank case 9 having a comparatively large cylinder 10 attached thereto. A piston 11 operates in cylinder 10 and is connected by means of a connecting rod-12 with a crank shaft 13 in crank cas 9. A comparatively Small cylinder 14 is arranged coaxially with cylinder 10 and a piston cylinder 15 operates in cylinder 14, the same being connected .with the piston 11, as shown. A stationary piston 16 is arranged to operate in piston cylinder 15 in' the usual manner as is more fully set forth in co-pending applications hereinafter mentioned and the cylinder 14 is provided with an inwardly extending head 17 equipped with spark plugs 18, the piston cylinder 15 being also equipped with spark plugs -19. The engine cylinders and co'ciperating parts thus far described are fully set forth and described in co-pending applications'No. 127,291. filed October 23, 1916, and No. 129,870 filed November 6, 1916, and form no part of the present invention, it being suiiicient to say that cylinder 10, and piston 11, cylinder 1%, piston cylinder 15, and stationary piston 16 are provided with suitable passages and ports (not shown), whereby suitable charges of three different kinds of fuel are successively forced into the upper operative end of cylinder 14 for effecting operations of the engine. The present invention relates solely to the means employed for controlling the exhaust valve of the engine, and is equally operative with other forms or arrangements of pistons and ports for forming and admitting the charges to the engine' The cylinder 14 is provided with a plurality of exhaust ports 20 in the outer walls thereof and a sleeve valve 21 is arranged to reciprocate in cylinder 14 and is provided with ports 22 arranged to register with ports 20 to eli ect exhaust of cylinder 14. The sleeve valve 21 is normally held in elevated or valve closing position by means of a compression spring 23, and the lower end of said sleeve valve is provided with an annular piston 24. operating in an annular cylinder 25 surrounding the engine cylinder 1 and formed by a sleeve 26 adjustably secured in position surrounding the lower portion of sleeve valve 21 and the corresponding por tion of engine cylinder 14:. A plurality of. exhaust ports 27 are provided in the walls of sleeve valve 21 anda plurality of pistoncontrolled ports 25 are arranged to admit inder 15. By adjusting the sleeve 26 verti cally, the exhaust ports 27 may be arranged to be uncovered at different times in the stroke of the sleeve valve 21 to exhaust the cylinder 25 as desired.
At its upper end the valve sleeve 21 provided with another annular piston 28 operating in an annular cylinder 29 surrounding the upper end of engine cylinder l4 .which is extended for this purpose. Exhaust ports 30 are formed in the walls of cylinder 29 and vertical admission passages 31 are formed in the innerwalls of valve sleeve 21 between ports 22, the lower ends of the passages 31 being provided with transverse extensions 32 arranged to communicatewith the exhaust ports 20 upon initial downward movement of the sleeve valve 21. A
. guard sleeve 33 is adjustably secured to sleeve valve 21 to embrace the outer wall of cylinder 29 and control the ports 30- therein, a set screw 34 permitting of adjustment of said guard sleeve 33. Guard sleeve 33 is also provided with suitable exhaust openings registering with. exhaust ports '22 in sleeie trated-in Fig. 6, a sleeve valve 35 is provided with ports 36 arranged to register with the exhaust ports 20 in cylinder 14, said sleeve valve being provided with guide rods 37 and compression springs 38, as in' dicated for normally holding the same in valveclosing position and guiding the movements thereof. At its lower end the sleeve valve 35 is provided with an annular piston 39 operating in an annular cylinder 40 sup- .plied with pressure from engine cylinder 14 by means of a piston-controlled port 40. Cylinder 40 is provided with exhaust ports 41 controlled by an adjustable guard sleeve 42, as indicated. This furnishes a slightly diiferent arrangement for controlling the exhaust of the cylinder by means of the internal pressure thereof. a
In both of the constructions above described, air under pressure is supplied from cylinder 10 as is more fully set forth in 00- pending applications. Cylinder 10 is provided with a plurality of'ports 43 in the walls thereof and a sleeve 44 is made adj ustable thereon to control said ports. If desired, the sleeve 44 may be connected with the sleeve 26- compellinig simultaneously movement-s thereof, By this means the supply of compressed air supplied by cylinder. 10 may be adjusted and when the sleeves/ are connected together the supply of com-- pressed air may be regulated to correspond with the exhaust.

other pipe 47 connects with a different pas sage 48 in the wall of cylinder 15 and it is designed that a carburetin arrangement (not shown) be attached to pipes 46 and 47,
While I have illustrated and desribed I the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into'eli'ect, these are capable of variation and modification with out departing from the spillit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to'be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is: I
1. The combination with an internal combustion engine cylinder having one or more ports in the walls thereof, of a sleeve valve controlling saidports; yieldable meansfor normally holding said sleeve in port-close ing position; pressure operable means for operating said sleeve to open said port or ports; and means for exhausting said pressure operable means, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an internal combustion engine cylinder having one or more ports in the-walls thereof, of a sleeve valve controlling said ports; yieldable means for normally holding said sleeve in port-closing position; pressure operable means for operating. said sleeve to open said port or ports; and adjustable means for exhaust ing said pressure operable means, substanv trolledport in said annular cylinder, substantially as described.
4. The combination with an internal combustion engine cylinderhaving one or more ports in the walls therepf, of a sleeve valve controlling said ports; a spring normally holding said sleeve in port-closing position; an annular cylinder surrounding said engine cylinder; an annular piston operating in said annular cylinder; a port controlled by the piston in the engine cylinder for supplying pressure to said annular cylinder to give initial opening movement to said valve; an annular cylinder located ad- "jacent the ports in the walls of the engine cylinder; an annular piston on said sleeve valve operating in said last mentioned annular cylinder; and passages in said sleeve valve arranged to communicate with said ports after initial movement of said sleeve 10 valve, substantially as described. 4 i In testimony whereof I. have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
