GAS-SAVER.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Cos'rAs KYRIAKOS, a citizen of the United States, residin at Flint, in the county of Genesee and tate of Michigan, have invented newand useful Improvements in Gas-Savers, of which the following is a specification. This invention has reference to trolling means for gas burners.
The object of the invention is toproduce a means designed to obviate the waste of a congas occasioned in gas stoves or ranges through failure in turning off the gas sup-v plying a gas burner when the latter is not actually in use. It is a common practice for housewives or cooks to turn on thegas at the commencement or preparation of a articles are removed from the stove for the complete preparation of other articles to be received upon the stove, is so great that such practice is seldom resorted to by the cook, the waste of gas not being considered.
With my improvement, I provide a controller for gas burners which is of'such a design and construction, as to be adapted, through the weight of an article or'uten'sil, to be arranged in position for heating over the burner, cooperating therewith and by virtue. of such cooperation to permit a free flow of gas to the burner, and upon the removal of the article therefrom, the device automatically operates to shut ofl or partially shut 011' the .supply of gas to the burner, consequently, extinguishing the flame of onlya small amount of gas, just sufiiclent' to effectively light the burner when a utensil is'again arranged over the said burner. V
A further object ofthe invention isto produce a gas control which shall be of a simple nature, readily installed upon 'any ordinary construction of gas stoves, which shall be positive in action, and which may be cheaply manufactured and installed.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the; nature of the invention is better understood, reference being bad to the ac eoinpanying drawings, in which:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed January '12, 1918. Serial No. 211,663.
Figure '1 is a detail sectional view of a portion of a gas stove illustrating the application of my improvement thereon. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33' of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 4 is a sectional view approximately I on the line 4.4 of Fig. 2.
Fig; 5 is an elevation, partly in section illustrating the arrangementiof parts when the improvement is brought and sustained 1n inoperative position.
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view showing the arrangement of parts when a burner is offset from the gas conducting pipe.
5 indicates a gas stove or range of any ordinary or preferred construction, 6 the, top plate therefor and 7the hole'in the plate;
Centrally arranged beneath hole '7, "is a burner 9, the said burner having. a pipe connection 10 with the mixing chambers .11, and the mixing chamber is provided with the u'sualshutter valve 12.
The gas manifold is indicated by the numeral'13, and is, as usual, arranged'to the outer side'ofthe range 5. Connected with the manifold isthe casing 14 for the valve 15 that control the gas between the manifold and the burner. The valve is provided with ing is provided with a pipe extension or nozzle 17 that extends centrally through the shutter 12, into the mixing chamber 11. The pipe extension 17 of the casing of the valve 15 outward of the mixing chamber 11 is provided with a plug valve18, the outer end thereof being preferably headed as at 19, and the said head being provided with an angularforked extension 20. The mixing chamber 11, upon its under surface, is approxi mately centrally provided with a depending bracket 21, the same having a rectangular opening 22, and the lower wall provided by the said openings is beveled or inclined from the outer face of the bracket to the inner face thereof, forming the same with what I will term a, tooth 23. Designed for free. movement through the opening 22 in the bracket 21 is a cross sectionally rectangular rod 24,
having, upon its lower edge,.a substantially section. This roundportion is threaded, as
at 24c, anelis centrally slitted as at .24"; .i
Referring now tothe drawings in detail,
the usual operating handle 16, and the c-as- The rod 24: is provided vvith a shoulder 27 1 and arranged upon thesaid rod and exert- "provided with an angle portion 29, which is otally connected as at 33 to-a lug or bracket pivotally connected as-'at-'30 'to the angular end 31 of an arm 32. The arm 32, at its juncture Wit-h 1ts'"an'gular extension 311s p1v 34 formed With or secured to the-under face of the" pipe 10 or the burner 9, as desired. The arm '-32 is provided with an upwardly rounded portion that terminates in a st'ra'ight l ekten'sion35'- arranged'centr-ally of the burner 9 and which passes through the openin'g7 in *the top ofthe'ran'ge. The end'of t-h'e extension 35"l1as"'-formed thereon aheadee which IS in the nature ofa cross or spider, the angular arms provldlngthe said'head being inclineddownwardly from the centerof the head. v
The numeral '37 designates a sleeve member'- designed to ire'ceivethe outerend of the I rod 2 k and to -have; 'the'threaded end 24' -has, upon its inner e-Xt'ensi'on, a flanged expartly'projecting therethrough. Screwed on thethreaded extension 24 of the rod 24 is a nut 25; the same preferably having a' round periphery Whiehis mil-led, and the' sa id nut tension 25,'Which is" designed to be'engaged by a spring hook 50' that is secured to the i "sleeve 37 The hook' 50 holds the nutin conmatingv engagement With the end of "the *sleeve 37 and the'turningof-the nut 25' ad j'usts the rod 2 l'with respect to the sleeve. The threaded extension 24 of'the rod 24, be-
- ing centrally slitted, and being constructed are adapted to exert an outward tension, or a tension away from each other, "and conseof metal, the parts divided by the said slit quently the nut '25, engaging the said slitred threaded portionwvill" compress-the bifurcated end thereof-to ins'u're'the nut against accldenta-l turning. The sleeve 37 is prothrough the bifurcated endof the finger and is'received between the arms forked end-20. 7 I
' The spring 28 normally actuates the members so that the finger 37 vvill'retain the valve 18 closed, but, when the Weighfiof a utensil Y provided by the misplaced on the'h'ead 36 of the arm member which sleeve, through the medium' of the enthroughathe valves wand-18 to the b rne 9,
The removal of the utensil Will cause the parts to assume their normal position through themedium of the spring 28, thus closing the valve 18.
The valve 18 is so regulated that a small flo-W of gas is permitted from the manifold to the burner which reduces, but does not 'e'iitinguish'the 7 fiam'e of -the'bu rner, so that when a utensil is again placed on the head 36 and the valve 18 operated, as above described, aFfuIl n w of gas 'Wi'll 'be' admitted from the iman ifold through the burner. The gas may: remain 1 ignited as dong. as the valve 15is turned itoits regulatedl open position. The adjustment ofthenut as previously stated, moves :the rod 2% longitudinally and, consequently, adjusts theposition' of the 'finger' 37 0f "the sleeve 37 With respect to thevsaid rod,and in -this-rmaim'er, the" flow" of The valve-18 is preferably-of a: substantially" frusto=conical v formation,'.the reduced end thereof r being provided "with a: headed s'tud-" 18 which centrally engages'an arched spring member *18":that has its ends Icontacting with the zva lve casing soaas to normally and effectively-retain the valveaon i its To limit and I support thearm "-32 "'in its yoke 39 upon the'under"face= of the burner 9,
gas through {the valve 18' may be and ininstances whenthe employment bf my 1gas control is 1 not immediately required, an
outward pu1l uponthe headi'orhandle 25' of thei'o'd 24: against-thepressure of the spring 1 28 will causethe 'fV-shaped'notch on depression tobe'engaged hy the 'tooth'l 23 F of--the bracket 21, holding'the head'36 belo-vvithetop plate 6 and openingthe valve -18'to permit of the free flow of "gas from the manifold to the -burner upon the turning of the valve 15.
