ARTHUR ROBITAILLE, OFPUTNAM, CONNECTICUT.
" AUTOMATIC CONTROLLED LIQUID-FUEL BURNER MECHANISM.
Application filed September 16, 1925. Serial No. 56,735.
To all whom it may concern:
4 Be 'it known that I, ARTHUR ROBITAILLE, a citizen; of the United States, residing at Putnam, in the county of Vindham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Controlled Liquid-Fuel Burner Mechanism,
of which the following is a specification.
' characters This invention relates to automatic con trolled liquid fuel burner mechanism designed primarily for use in connection with hot water heaters or boilers, but it is to be understood that a burner in accordance with this invention, can be employed for any purposes for which it is found applicable, and the invention has for its primary object to provide, in a .manner as .hereinafter set forth, a burner mechanism of the class re ferred to for producing and regulating combustion and heat with respect to a water heater or boiler.
The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth first, a burner where combustion of liquid fuel or the vapor therefrom is produced; second, regulation of the point of combustion to secure an economical conduction of heat to the water; third, automatically regulating or controlling of the'liquid fuel supply, thus controlling the heat generated and imparted to the water; and fourth, for cutting o f the liquid fuel supply in case of failure of combustion.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an automatically controlled liquid fuel burner which is comparatively sim ole in its construction and arrangement, (11- rable, thoroughly efficient in its use, readily installed, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can. be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an elevation of a hot water boiler showing the adaptation therewith of an automatically controlled liquid fuel burner mechanism in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation, illustrat ing the boiler with the mechanism, in accordance with this therewith.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the burner mechanism attached tothe boiler.
Figure 4 is a section on line H, Figure invention, arranged valve.
Figure 6 is a detail illustrating the controlling switch for the motor circuit.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1
denotes a hotwater boiler and 2 the tire box thereof. The boiler 1 has arranged at the top thereof a thermostatic controlling .device 3 for a liquid fuel feed valve to be presently referred to.
The burner element of the automatically controlled liquid fuel burner mechanism, in accordance with this invention, is generally indicated by the reference character 4 and it consists of a tubular or cylindrical body portion 5, formed with an open top and an integral bottom 6 having a depending portion 7 forming a directing means for the liquid fuel not consumed. The bottom (3 is provided with a depending socket forming member 8 for the reception of the vertical standard 9 of a support 10. The body pol tion fl; is positioned within the tire box 2 at the bottom thereof and extends a substantial distance upwardly within said fire box 2. Formed integral with one side of the body portion 5, as well as extending thcreinto, is a hollow elbow shaped member 11, having the lower part of that portion arranged within the body-portion 5 of concave curva- Thebody portion 5 directly above and in I- close proximity to the depending portion 7 w of the bottom 6 is formed with an opening: 16 in which is secured one end of the liquid- Jib fuel return pipe 17. The outer portion of the member ll depends with respect to the bodyportion 4 and has extending therein, as well as connected therewith, a blast or air conductingpipe 18 which leads from a blower 19 mounted on the support 20. The blower 19 is operated from an electric motor 21 having its operation controlled by an actuating mechanism for the liquid fuel supply shut 05 valve.
The liquid fuel supply pipe, which leads from a suitable source of supply, is indicated at 22 and opens into a controllable 'feed valve mechanism indicated generally by the reference character 23. Extending 'from the valve mechanism 23 to a liquid The stem of the feed valve mechanism is indicated at 28, projects from the casing of said mechanism 23, and supports a dial plate 29, and with the dial on the plate 29 is associated a pointer 30, formed on the inner end of an actuatin arm- 31 connected to the stem 28. The arm 31 is counterbalanced as ,at 32 and is connected by a pulling member 33, in the form of a chain to the thermostatic controlling device 3.'
The stem of the'cutofi valve mechanism 24 for the liquid fuel is indicated at 34, is
spring controlled and projects from one end of the housing of said mechanism 24 and is disposed at right angles with respect to the conducting pipe 25. Overhanging that end of the housing 35 from which the stem 34 projects is an arm 36, to which is pivotally connected, as a631, a depending link 38 which normally bears against the stem 36 for the purpose of maintaining the valve mechanism 24 open. l ivotally connected, as at 39, to the lower end. of the link 38 is one end of a lever arm 40, which in proximity to its other end is pivotally connected, as at 41, to a link 42. Depending from the housing 35 is a lug 43, to which the inner'end of thelink 42 is pivotally connected, as at 44. The link 42 carries an adjusting screw 45 for controlling its movement in a direction towards the housing 35. The lever 40 extends from the outer end of the link 42 and is formed with a hook-shaped free end 46'for sus ending the bale 47 of a collecting receptac e 48. The receptacle 48 is arranged in a manner so that the discharge end of a pipe 17 will extend thereover and discharge therein a tion takes rece es liquid fuel conducted by the pipe l7 from the chamber 15, and by this arrangement as the body of fuel increases in the receptacle 48, the weight thereof will swing the lever 40 from the full line to the dotted line position shown in Figure 4, wherehy the valve stem 34 will be released and move in a direction to close the valve mechanism 24, thereby shutting off the supply of fuel.
Means is employed for opening the motor driving circuit when the, feed valve mechanism is closed, and said means consists of a switch device 49, in the motor circuit, and i feed valve is opened to the desired extent and which can be ascertained from the dial. The fuel travels through the pipes 23, 25, and 26 and drops into the pan or cup 12 where it is vaporized by the heat'a'rid blown by the blast into the burner element where combuslace. The feed of the oil canbe regulated y adjustment of the pointer 30 relative to the dial on the plate 29 and furthermore can be also regulated by the thermostatic controlling device 3, which can be a damper regulator or a temperature regulator. .The device 3 acts to close the feed valve with respect to the temperature of the water. In case the flame at the burner element is extin ished and the fuel continues to be en p ied to such element, it will its flow through t .e return pipe 17 to the col-',
lector 42, and the weight of the fuel'within the collector-42 will operate the actuating mechanism latter.
It is thought that the many advantages of an automatic controlled liquid fuel burner 3-:nechanism in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as described and claimed, yet it is to be understood that'changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of' the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
no for the cutoff valve, close the In a liquid fuel burner mechanism an open fuel, a casting forming an inlet for said chamber common to liquid fuel and a blast of air and formed of a pair of arms, one ofthe arms of said casting integral with and extending through theother side of. said body portion and into said chamber, the inher end of such arm having its lower portion ofiset 'to provide a depending liquid fuel collecting cup, the other arm of said 10 casting integral with said body portion, a
closure for the top of said body portion and formed with a central openingand a liquid fuel feed pipe extending through said last mentioned arm and partly through the first mentioned arm, that part of the feed pipe in said horizontal arm extending partly across said c.up. I
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature hereto.
ARTHUR ROBITAILLE.
