origina; application inea January a, 1917,`seria1nb. 140,051. Divided and this application mea August 1,
To all whom t may concern: y y
Be itknown that LROBERT l. JOHNS., a citizenof the UnitedStates of America, and a residentofBrooklym` Kings county,
and State of New York,` haveinvented cer` tain new and useful'lmprovements in Portable Houses, of which the followingis a specification, reference being hadto. ,the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.V
My invention relates to portable or sectional houses, garages, and other buildings. In my copending application Serial No. 140,051 filed January 2, 1917, of which this application is a division, I have shown and described a portable building which possesses a number of features of special utility and my present invention is particularly concerned with building beams and the structure of the interchangeable sections.
Gne object of my present invention is to provide an imlproved portable house structure that sha1 be so arranged and constructed that it may be packed inV a very small compass and economically shipped to great distances.
Another object is to provide a portable house or building structure that shall be composed of a plurality of sections of material size which may readily be interchanged and secured in the complete building so that the building may be transferred short distances from one location to another and at the same time each section being composed of parts which may be entirely disassembled for the purpose of shipping the structure in a very small compass.
In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood I will now proceed to describe the same in the following specilica-- tion, and then point out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 1s an elevation of a building wall embodying my invention, showing parts of a plurality of adjacent units. 1
2 and 3 are Sectional plan views showingthe same building section.
Figa illustrates the nesting of the studs for shipment.
10,111 and 12 designate units of a building wall. They are identical in size so that they maybe interchanged and assembled in anyorder desired, and they are structurally similar except that the unit 11 is provided 1917.4 Seria1N0.183,872.
as illustrated, with a window sash 13 whereas the other two units 10 and 12 are blank wall units. The window sash is intended `to be representative of any suitable window or door arrangement, my idea being to have the units interchangeable in order that the window or door unit may be placed wheri ever. 1t 1s found most convenient or most suitable to have it located.
The section 11, as illustrated, comprises an inner plate or board 14:, an outer plate 15 preferably formed of sheet metal, vertical spacing studs 17, and bolts 18. These parts were assembled to constitute a unitwhich is complete in itself and as clearly explained is interchangeable with other units of the house.
It is nevertheless composed of parts or members which may easily be assembled and taken apart. By this means the structure may be packed in a small amount of space for longl distance shipments as for example, from one country to another, or it may be shipped locally from place to place, with out taking apart the various units of the building, by merely separating the house into its units.
The outer sheet metal plate 15 of each unit is formed with a bead or channel 19 near each end so that when the two units are brought together the sheet` metal plates may overlap with the beads nesting as shown in Fig; 3. This makes the outer covering of the house tight and makes it easy to assemble the units.
The wall board or plates of whatever character on the interior of the building, are not overlapped but their abutting edges are covered by a clamping bead or strip 20 which is held in place by bolts 21 which extend through the studs of the building.
The .spacing of the studs in the building is such as to accommodate the units. Con` sequently, the principal building studs may be placed in position before any of the units are erected.
Each of the studs of which the units are composed as well as the main studs of the building to which the units are attached, is preferably formed of sheet metal and has a channel-shape with liaring webs so that the channels may be nested together in compact form for shipment.
It is evident that structural modifications may be eected within the spirit and scope union.
of my invention, and I intend only such y limitations as are imposed by the appended spacing studs of channel-shaped cross-scction, and detachable means for holding the parts-of eaoli section-together and independent means for connecting the sections togetliei';v
"3.' A portable house comprising assembledsect'ion's of a plurality of parts, each section being .constructed to be. y. .connected .with an adjacent section, means for connecting said sections together, and detachable means independent iof .the means for connecting the sections for clamping the parts of each section together.
In Witness whereof, ,I 4have hereunto set my liand this 23A day' "of July, 191,7.
