To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JAMES ANDERSON, a subject of the King of'Great Britain, residing at Victoria. in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates and more particularly to an improved double farm gate especially adapted to be swung to open position by moving only one section of the gate, when only a narrow space is required, or which may be swung as a unit to fully open the gate for the pur pose of admitting large vehicles which require a relatively wide space.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improved construction which will include double sections so connected together as to permit them to be readily folded together, or rigidly held in operative position in a manner that will permit the sections to be swung as a single unit, and, at the same time prevent sagging or binding of the sections.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the gate constructed in accordance with my inven tion.

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, throughout the several views, the gate posts 1 and 2 are spaced apart for a required distance and the space between th posts is provided with a $111 3 which consists of a concrete filling extending from the ground level to a suitable depth whereby a firm and even surface at. 1s prov ded for a purpose which will presently appear.
The post 1 is provided with supporting bolts which include hinged ends 5 received in the eyes 6 of the leaves 7 which are attached to the gate section 8. There are two gate sectlons shown in the present illustration indicated at 8 and 9 and it should be understood that more gate sections may be attached together if desired. Each gate section consists of a square frame provided wlth a suitable wire mesh although it may be understood that the gate sections may be constructed in any preferred manner so as to close the gap between the posts when the gate sections are in closed position. The lower frame bar in each gate section is provided with a roller 11 which is mounted at the center and is adapted to travel over the surface 4 when the gate sections are swung to open or closed position thereby supporting the sections and preventing any sagging or binding of the gate while in use. A spring latch 12 is attached to the endframe bar of the gate section 9 and is adapted to engage a clip 13 carried by the fence post 2. This latch 12 is provided with a suitable hand grip 14; which may be manipulated to disengage the latch from the clip 13 when the gate is to be,
opened.
The meeting ends of the frame are connected together by the double hinges shown to advantage in Fig. 3 and each hinge con sists of attaching plates 15 and 16, the plate 15 being secured to the gate section 9 at one side thereof while the plate 16 is secured to the section 8 at the opposite side thereof. An intermediate connecting plate 17 is extended transversely through the gap be tween the spaced ends of'the gate sections and hinge pins 18 and 19 are provided to connect the plates together so that a double hinge is provided for the purpose of permitting swinging of the gate sections to various positions as 1s indicated partly in Fig.
3 of the drawing. These sections may be swung inwardly or outwardly to open the gate for the admission of a person or any article requiring merely a small space. Since a gate of this type is generally employed in a relatively wide gate way it is necessary to provide some structure for preventing binding of the gate sections or ging at the middle thereof while the gate is in use and consequently I have provided the retaining plate mounted on the top and bottom of the gate. Each plate 20 is provided with securing flanges 21 which embrace one of the frame bars of the gate so that the plate 20 is extended over in parallelism with the adjacent horizontal frame bar of the next gate section. Each horizontal frame bar in the section 9 is provided with a pin securely fastened and adapted to project through an arcuate slot 22 in the plate 20. This slot 22, it will be observed by referring to Fig. 2 is adapted to permit the pin 23 to swing with the gate, the slot being just wide enough to permit free passage of the pin. A nut or other suitable fastening .element2a is secured to the pin so that the gate is partially suspended from the plate 20 and any tendency of the sections to sag or bind is avoided by this structure.
The gate section 9 is permitted to swing in almost a complete clrcle and consequently the slot 22 is shaped to permit the pin topass from one side to the other while the gate section 9 changes its pivot point due to the construction of the double hinges.
To maintain the gate sections in rigid position while being used as a single unit, I have provided a pivotally mounted yoke indicated at 24 which comprises the parallel arms 25 pivotally mounted on the gate section 9 through the medium of the pins 26 and connected by a U-shaped portion 27 which may be grasped by the operator and pressed downwardly whereupon the parallel portions 25 will swing out of engagement with the'adjacent vertical bar of the frame 8 whereupon the two frame sections may be swung independently of each other to open only one-half of the gate. When the gate sections are normally closed this retaining yoke is normally held in the position shown by Fig. 1 so that no distortion will occur during heavy wind storms or the like.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. A gate comprising swingingly mounted gate sections having their meeting ends hingedly, connected together by double hinges, said double hinges including attaching plates having a connecting plate normally extending through the gap between the spaced ends of the gate section, and a yoke pivotally mounted on one of the gate sections and adapted to engage the other gate section to prevent swinging movement of one gate section independently of the other while the said yoke member is in operative position.
2. A gate comprising a pair of gate sections swingingly mounted and hingedly connected together, plates fixed to one of the gate sections and disposed parallel with the other section 'at the top and bottom thereof, each plate being provided with arcuate slots, and retaining pins fixed to the adjacent gate section'and extended through the said slots and provided with fastening elements binding against the said plates to prevent sagging of the said gate sections with respect to each other.
3. A gate comprising a pair of gate sections hingedly mounted and having their proximate ends hingedly connected together, rollers supporting each gate'section intermediate the ends thereof, a yoke element mounted on one of the gate sections and adapted to releasably engage the other gate section whereby both sections will be normally rigidly held in alinement to be swung as a single unit on the said rollers, and means mounted on one gate section and engaged with the other gate section to prevent sagging of the connected ends of the gate sectlon.
