Description

J. M. ALMEDIA.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR BAGS.
APPLICATION FLED MAY 22. 1918.

(inventor i im a d za,
To all whom it may concern:
. UNTE. STATES PATEN nsro.
1 JOSE M. IALMEDIA, or snosnoivn; IDAHO.
LooKmG DEVICE FOR BAGS.
Be it known that I, Jose M; ALMEDIA, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Shoshone, in the county of Lincoln and State of Idaho, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'will en able others sln'lled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a locking device for bags.
An important object ofthis invention is to provide a device 'of the character described having means for eflectively closing the open end of a mail bag or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device for effectively looking a bag, which is easy to apply, reliable in use, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the in- I vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bag having my improved locking device applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a rod adapted to extend through apertures in the bag, for the urpose of locking the same, and
F 1g. 4 is a plan view of a pair of pivoted arms, forming a part of the invention.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a cloth bag possessed of the usual degree of pliability. Apertures 6, formed on opposite sides of the bag, are provided with metallic reinforcements 7 around their Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4,
Application filed. May 22, 1918. Serial No. 235,991.
throughthe bracket 9 and the rod 8 carriesan eye 12, formed on one end thereof for the reception of a loop 13.
Arms 14;, pivotally secured to the'ends of the U-shaped bracket 9, as at 15, are ar-] ranged parallel to the rod 8 and on opposite sides thereof. A look 16 carried by theend of one of the arms 14 is adapted to co-act witha locking bar 17 'pivotally secured to the other arm 14, as at 18. An aperture 19,
formed in the forward end of the pivoted rod 8 is adapted for the reception of the locking bar 17, extending therethrough. A depression 20 formed in the forward end of the "locking bar 17 is provided'to permit of the functioning of the lock 16. It is obvious that any type of lock may be employed, this feature not being a part of the invention in the sense that any particular type of lock must be employed.
In applying my improved locking device to mail bags, or the like, the rod' 8 is passed through the alining apertures provided in the bag for this purpose. To look the device,-the locking bar 17 is passed through the aperture 19 in the forward end of the rod 8, and the end portion thereof is engaged by the lock 16. It is obvious that access to the bag is prevented through the top portion thereof, without removing or demolishing the device.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination, with a bag formed of relatively pliable material and having apertures therein; the upper portion of said bag being crimped to form a plurality of U- shaped sections, thus alining the apertures therein; arod adapted to be passed through the alining apertures; a U-shaped bracket secured to one end of the rod; arms pivotally secured at one end thereof to the U-shaped brackets on opposite sides of said rod; and co-acting locking devices carried by the ends of the pivoted arms and adapted to prevent the removal of said rod from the alining apertures.
2. The combination, with a ba formed of relatively pliable material, said ag having apertures in its upper end portion, said bag being-adapted to" be crimp edto farm aplurality of U-shaped sections, thus alining'the" apertures thereln; a, rod -'adeijgitedFttfieitthti through the alining apertures in the bag; a U-shaped bracket having pivote-Pcdnffettien with the rod; arms pivotally secured to the" u'eisheped braekehahdfall'rfinged on opposi-tesides of said rod; a lock carried by one of said arms; a lockin bar 'e'ifri'i d b'y thbther" pivoted arm and eefapted to engage -said rodand-Be; en'g'gd by the lbkbzirriedb yl the A locking device fbrbags comprising a rbidf having; an opefiingiinf o'n'e" end thereqf, a b acket haifinfg? pivete l 'cdnntibng With sai'd' "red" at wcn trai goieien' there'dfglaiifi s" pi'vate'u r secures to the breaks; and" leek;
