To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BIELAW- SKI, a citizen of Russia, residing at Bayonne, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Boats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in boats, and particularly to types adapted to be used in rough water for life saving and like purposes.

The principal object of the'mvention 1s to rovide a boat of this type wlth buoyant floats secured to and extending at a dlstance from the sides thereof, and which effectively prevents the boat from capsizing.

A further object is to provide means for adjusting the floats to the sides of the boat and maintaining them in rigid relation.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the preferred form of the means of attaching the floats to the boat, and,

As shown, the floats 20 are held within bands 19, which are engaged at their parallel, bent ends by pins 28, with bars 30, extending toward the boat and which are held by other pins 31 in blocks 32, slidably mounted upon rails 33, fixed in an lar brackets 34, secured to the hull of the boat at its upper edge in the manner of a hinge, whereby the floats may be raised or lowered with relation to the upper surface of the boat.

In this latter form of construction, the buoyant elements or floats 20 may preferably be filled with cork or like light material 39 so that should leakage occur they will still remain in a buoyant condition.

Fromthe foregoing it will be seen that in addition to sliding the blocks 32 on the rails 33, it is also ossible to disconnect the floats and fold the arms 30 alongside the rail as indicated in the broken lines in Fig. 1.

A cover of flexible water-proof fabric may be used over the boat, the same being supported by curved rods 46, as indicated in Fig. 2.

Thus it will be seen that means have been provided whereby the boat cannot overturn laterally and that the device can be attached to'boats of the ordinary type of construction in a ready manner.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is:

In a life boat, the combination with the frame thereof, and a pair of non-sinkable floats, of a pair of rails secured at their ends upon opposite sides of said boat, bars hingedly engaged with said rails extending in parallel horizontally therefrom, bands, encircling said floats, said bands being pivotally engaged with the ends of said extendmg bars, pairs of straps having one of their ends engaged with said bands and the other with the keel of the boat, and buckles on said straps whereby their opposite length may be lengthened or shortened.
