1S. V'. MARTINI- LIFE BOAT.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. I8. 1918.

san v. MARTIN, or sAN FRANCISCO, cALrronNrn.
' `LIFE-Boar.
Lacasse.
To all whom it may concern: n
Be it known that I, SARAH V. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Life- Boats, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improved attachments to life boats, and the object of the invention is to provide means `for reventing the capsizing of a life boat w en lowered into the water from vthe deck of a ship and also to provide, in combination with such a life boat, means which will serve as rafts, either `attached to the life boat or independent thereof, and which can support a great number of persons in addition to those contained in the life boat.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a life boat embodying my improvement; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a broken bottom plan view of an auxiliary safety device, de tached.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a life boat having secured toits sides on or below its water line hinge knuckles 2, by which and by companion hinge knuckles 3 and hinge pins 4l, there are hinged to the life boat the inner edges of wooden frames or rafts 6. To the underside of said rafts 6 are secured buoys 7, which may be of any suitable character. Life lines8 are secured around the edges of the rafts.
When the life boat is in its position of disuse on a ship, said rafts or frames hang vertically, and the buoysv secured thereto are received in the cavities on opposite sides of the keel below the swell in the sides of the boat. In this position they occupy s `ace which Vwould otherwise be unused. hen

the life boat is lowered to the water, the buoys come in contact with the water be? forethe main portion of the body of the boat and they remain on the top of the When. it is desired to row the life boat, the rafts can be detached by removing the pintles of the hinges and then they will actas independent life rafts and will support almost, if not quite, as many persons as the life boat itself.
By my inventionI not only absolutely prevent the capsizing of a life boat, .which is such -a common occurrence in ship wrecks, but I also provide means for saving about twice as many lives as could be saved by kthe life boat. itself without substantially increasing the space occupied by the life boat.
I claim l. In combination with a life boat, buoyant means secured to its sides and depending therefrom in the position of disuse of the life boat, and arranged to swing out horizontally from the life boat when the latter is lowered into the Water.
2. In combination with a life boat, buoyantV life rafts detachably hinged to its op-l posite sides.
