ADJUSTABLE FRAME FOR WINDOW-SGREENS AND THE LIKE.
Le a ise.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application filed July 22, 1918. Serial No. 246,088.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHARES W. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing atLancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Frames for VVindow-Screens and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable frame constructions and more particularly to frames for use in connection with window screens and the like, the-primary obj ect thereof being to provide such frames of novel construction, which can be modified with a minimum of trouble, so as to make the frames of the proper width and height, to be accommodated for the particular need for which it is intended, as for instance to fit a certain sized window, when the frame is used as a window screen frame.
A further and important object of the invention is to provide a window frame and screen construction, which is adapted to be made in stock sizes and arranged to have portions cut out of the top and bottom and side portions thereof so as to make the same of the proper height and width, means being provided for bracing said top and bottom and side portions after being shortened, Jarticularly without disturbing the sur cial plane of said strip or section, and means being also provided to slidably mount the frame or screen and to secure the usual screen mesh thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described herein and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is had to the drawings, forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section and partly broken away, showing my improved adjustable frame used as a screen frame,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the parts being enlarged, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a corner portion of the frame, with the sections or parts thereof disassembled.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved frame is shown as comprising side portions IOandtop and bottom portions 11 and12 respectively. The side portions 10 are provided in their opposite faces with cut out strips 13 extending the entire length thereof and providing intermediate longitudinal grooves 1t in which these strips snugly fit.,
The top and bottom strips 11 and 12 are provided with opposed cut out portions or strips 15 on their opposite faces, the grooves 16 extending the entire length thereof. At the ends of the sides 10, the latter are provided. with tenons 17, while the extremities or ends of the top and bottom portions 11 and 12 are provided with mortises 18 de signed to receive the tenons 17 therein, for making a complete frame. Thus, by removing the strips 13 and 15, the side and top and bottom portions may be made shorter by cutting pieces out of the centers thereof and then nailing the strips in the grooves so as to connect the end portions, as shown at 19whereby a frame of the proper width and height may be provided. The ends of the strips are. afterward connected at shown at 20.
While the frame as described is of general application, when the device is used as a window screen frame, the side portions 10 have the tenons 17 continued to form tongues 21 along the outer edges thereof adaptedto be received within grooves 22 formed in the inner sides of guide strips 23 designed to be secured to the inner faces of'the side portions of the window frame shown at 24: in
Fig. 1 of the drawings. The frame may then be covered with wire mesh or screen as shown at 25 and the joints in the strips, forming the sides and top and bottom portions of the frame, covered by molding 26, which also serves to secure the Wire mesh or screen to the frame. The frames may be made in any preferred stock sizes, the strips being sold and shipped knocked-down, so that the frames or window screens made from the same may be made to fit various sized windows. The screen is then adapted to be slid in the guide ways at the sides of the window frame, so as to be open or closed with respect to the sill 27.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding. of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while 1 have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure,
I desire that it be understood that suchchanges may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An adjustable frame comprising four side strips, means for joining the ends of said strips, said strips having grooves cut longitudinally thereof in opposite sides, strips adapted to be set in said grooves and molding pieces secured to said side strips over certain of the strips set in the grooves.
52. An adjustable frame of the class'described, comprising a plurality of sections, means for joining the ends of said sections, said sections being adapted to have the central portions thereof cut away, and connecting means for joining the remaining portions of said sections after said central portions are cut away.
3. An adjustable frame of the class described, comprising a plurality of sections, means for joining the ends of said sections, said sect-ions being adapted to have the central portions thereof cut away, connecting means for oining the remaining portions of said sections after said central portions are cut away, certain of said sections having tongues, and guide ways having grooves receiving said tongues.
4. An adjustable frame of the class described, comprising a plurality of sections, means for joining the ends of said sections, said sections being adapted to have the central portions thereof cut away, connecting means for joining the remaining portions of said sections after said central portions are cut away, said connecting means being seated Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the in said sections so as to be flush with the faces thereof.
5. In an adjust-able frame, top and bottom sections, and side sections, said top and bottom sections having cut out portions in their opposed faces providing longitudinal grooves and also having mortises in the ends thereof running vertically, said side sections having cut out portions in their opposed faces running longitudinally thereof and tenons at the ends thereof to en age said mortises, strips in said side portions and the top and bottom portions and adapted to be secured to the remaining parts of said side portions and the top and bottom portions after intermediate portions of the same are cut away.
6. In an adjustable frame, top and bottom sections, and side sections, said topand bottom sections having cut out strips in their opposed faces providing longitudinal grooves and mortises in the ends thereof running vertically, said side sections having out out strips in their opposed faces running longitudinally thereof and providing similarly positioned grooves, and tenons at the ends thereof, strips adapted to be secured in the grooves to the remaining parts of said side portions and the top and bottom portions after intermediate portions of the same are cut away, said side portions having tongues contiguous with the tenons at the extremities thereof, grooved strips adapted to slidably receive said tongues, and molding pieces for'the faces of said side portions and the top and bottom portions for covering the joints and strips and for attaching wire meshing or the like to the frame, the extremities of said side portions and the top and bottom portions, belng connected by said mortises and tenons at the corners of the frame.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
