TOOIIFOR MARKING AND INGISING- HINGE-BUTT RECESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application filed February 21, 1918. Serial No. 218,479.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wilson THoirPsoN,
Flippin, in the county of Marion, State of Arkansas, haveinvented a new and useful Tool for Marking and Incising Hinge-Butt Recesses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to an improved tool for marking and incising hinge-butt recesses in the stiles and jambs of door frames, doors, blinds, window frames, or other like articles and swinging members, and one of the objects of the invention is to'provide an efficient and simple labor saving device of this kind which is practical.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improvedframe, the sides and one end of a rectangular portion of which being U-shaped in cross section to receive marking and cutting knives, whereby upon imparting hammer blows on the frame laterally, the cutting knives may be forced into the door jamb or stiles of the edges of the blind or door, so as to mark the size and depth of the mortise or recess.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an abutment arch on said frame to receive the hammer blows.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means consisting of a reciprocating gouge cutting knife mounted in guides of the frame for gouging or cutting out of the mortise or recess.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a, view in perspective of the improved tool for marking and incising hinge-butt recesses constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a plan view of the tool.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
6 is a detail view of one of the cutting A knives of one of the sides of said frame. a citizen of the United States, residing at g at one end of the frame.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the cutting knife Referring more especially to the drawings,
'1 designates a frame, the portion 2 of which is rectangular in plan view, while the portion 3 is narrower and has its end bar 4 provided with a guide opening 5. The greater portions of the sides 6 of the part 2 of the frame and the end bar 7, are each U-shaped ,in cross section, thereby providingv channels 8 and 9 of the sides 6 and 7 respectively for -the cutting knives 10 and 11. The arrangementof the knives is U-shaped, so that when theframe is disposed adjacent the jamb or i the edge of the door and hammer blows imarted on the frame, the cutting edges of the .sides and the end piece. of the portion 2 of the frame and are provided with nuts 13, to
hold the knives securely in the channel.
Corresponding edges of the sides 6 of the portion 2 of the frame are provided with oppositely disposed lugs 14:, which receive the spaced rods 15 and 16. The rod 15 is riveted in the lugs, whereas the rod 16 has a headed end 17 and a nut 18 at its other end, to hold the same in place. A cutting or gouging knife 19 of a width to fit and to be guided between the side knives 10, that is between and adjacent the cutting edges of said side knives, is guided between the spaced rods 15 and 16. This gouging or cutting knife has a shank 20. The shank is bifurcated as shown at 21 to receive the small or contracted end of the gouging or cutting blade. The ends of the forks are designed to abut the rods 15 and 16, whereby the cutting edge 24 of the knife 19 may be limited an infinitesimal distance from the cutting edge of the knife 11, thereby avoiding dulledges 24 from contacting with the cutting knife 11. Arching from one side piece to the other of the end portion 2 of the frame is a semi-circular archmember 25, extend ing laterally from the frame. In cutting hinge-butt mortises or recesses, the frame is placed so that the cutting edges of the knives 10 and 11 will engage the-jam'b or the edge of the door. then imparted on the arch 25', causing the knives to cut into the jarnb, whereby the depth of the, mortise may be, out, After cutting the depth of the mortise, the gouging knife having been previously withdrawn to its outermost position, hammer blows are impartedto the extremity 26 of the shank, causing the cutting edge 2a of, the lmifeli) to gouge or cut out the filling of the mortise or recess, according tothe thickness of and forthe purpose of receiving a hinge leaf (not shown). The cutting on gouging knife 19, may be. easily removed, as well as the knives 110 and 11, whereby they may. be sharpened. To remove the knifetl9 the bolt I7 is removed, in w-hich'case the Shank of the knifemay bewithdrawn fromtheopening 5. Tore'move the knives 10 and 11 the bolts 12" are, removed.
The invention having been set forth what is claiined as new and useful is In a hinge-butt recess cutting tool, the combination with an elongated skeleton Hammer. blows. are
frame comprising a Wide rectangular portion at one end and a contracted loop shapedv handle portion at the other end, the sides and ends of said wide rectangular portion having a contiguous channel, cutting knives secured in said channel; a gage or cutting knife guided between the lower edges of the side knives, a pair of transverse spacedbrac- 40 ing and guide rods connecting between the sides of said rectangular portion, and between which rods said gage knife isadditionally guided, a handle guided in the end of the contracted loop or handle of said frame,- the inner end of the last named-handle being connected to the gage knife and adapted to abut said. guide rods, whereby the cutting end edge of the gageknife is prevented from contacting with the cutting edge of the end knife of the, rectangular portionoftheframe, and an abutment arch projecting laterally from, the sides of the rectangular portionotthe .frame to receive hammer impacts, wherebythe .side andend knives may "be driveninto, the. jamb.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tothis specification in, the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
