To facilitate the making of this cut or incision the opposite edges of the cutter 12 are arranged with a cutting edge 17, and the cutters and 11 are arranged with similar cutting edges at the edge adjacent the cutter 12 when mounted on the frame, as shown at 18. To limit the depth cut or incision the frame is arranged with a gauge in the form of a ledge 19 flanged outwardly from the bottom edge of the side and end walls.
To remove the material within the cut or incision made by the cut- ters 10, 11 and 12 to form a mortise a slicing cutter is provided, comprising a substantially rectangular blade 20 having a perforated ear 21 extended laterally from the juncture of one end edge with the back edge whereby it is pivotally mounted to have movement into and out of the frame transversely to the cutters fixed to the frame, on a perforated ear 22 extending outwardly and laterally from the end frame wall 8 in a `plane with the gauge flange 19, by a screw and nut threaded thereon, as at 23. To arrange the cutter 2O to move in a lane with the cutting edges of the cutters xed upon the frame, as is shown in Figures 2 andi3, a washer 24 is interposed between the fraine and cutter ears 21, 22. The cutter Qi*A blade is arranged with a. cutting edge 25 to extend alongthe longitudinal edge opposite the back edge and the end edge at which the adja'cent mounting ear 21 is located, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The slicing cutter is also provided with a hand grip to manipulate the same, which may be in the form of a handle 26 fixed to the blade adjacent the back edge 'to extend opposite to the mounting ear 21.,
To guide the slicing cutter the end wall 9 of the frame is extended to project outwardly and inwardly of the frame, as at 27, this wall being preferably of curved form with the bottom edge 28 extended below the bottom edge of the end wall 9 a distance substantially equal to the portion of the cutting edge of the frame cutters extended below the bottom of the frame and the top edge inclining or converging from the juncture of said wall extension with the end wall to the bottom edge. In the manipulation of the slicing cutter to cut and remove the portion within the depth cutters it is maintained in engagement with the bottom edge of the wall extension 27, this edge being preferably flanged outwardly similar to the frame Walls to facilitate the guiding of the gouging cutter. The frame is also arranged with gauge means to limit the width of the mortise. For this purpose a lip 29 is struck downwardly from the frame ear 22, which ear is in alinement with the shoulder formed by the downward extending of the bottom edge of the wall extension 27, as at 30. In the use of the device it is positioned on a door or frame with the edge shoulder 30 and the lip 29 in engagement with the side of the door stile or door frame. When so positioned a striking member 36 is placed upon the cutter extensions 10, 11 and 12', said member having a central portion 37 adapted to be struck with a hammer or the like to drive the cutters 10, 11 and 12 into the material of the door or frame until the gauge ledge 19 abuts against the door or frame.
To position the mortise relative to the top or bottom edge of a door or frame an adjustable gauge is provided. This gauge comprise plates connected to have longitudinal adjustment, in the present instance shown as two in number 31, 32, said plates being adjustably connected by arranging elongated slots 33 therein for the arrangement of clamping screws 34. One plate, as 31, has one end bent at a right angle and perforated for engagement of either of the screws 14 for mounting the cutters 10 or 11 to mount the gauge upon the frame to extend laterally from either of the end walls 8 or 9. The other plate 32 has the outer end ofiset at a right angle, as at 35, to engage at the top or bottom edge of the door, this offset portion being of a thickness equal to the clearance desired between the door and door frame and serving as a gauge for this purpose. To assure a severing of the material at the juncture of the end cutters 10, 11 and side cutter 12, or at the corner formed by said cutters, the bottom cutting edge 15 of the cutters 10, 11 at the juncture thereof with side cutting edge 18 of said cutters is extended laterally of the side cutting edge 18 as at 37', this projecting cutting edge also serving to secure the cutters 10, 1l and 12 in incision making position and against displacement as force is applied to the gouging cutter 20 to cut the material between the cutters 10, 11 and 12.
It will be obvious that various modifications may be made in constructions and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In a mortis@ cutting device, 'frame arranged with a side wall and integral right angle end walls and one end wall arranged at the end with a perforated ear extending laterally in a plane with the bottom edge of the frame and the other end wall extended outward and curved inward, cutters fixed upon the inner surface of the frame walls with the cutting edge extended beyond the bottom edge, a slicing cutter substantially of rectangular form having a cuttingl edge extended along a longitudinal edge and one end edge thereof with a perforated ear extending laterally from the corner at the juncture of the end having the cutting edge with the back edge of the cutter,
and means to pivotally connect the slicing cutter with the perforated ear ot' the frame to arrange said cutter to have movement in a direction into and out of the open side of the trame transversely of and in a plane with the cutting edge of the cutters fixed on the frame, and the bottom edge et the outward and inward curved extension 01"' the one end wall ot the trame extended below the bottom of the remainder ot the trame and adapted tor the engaging of the slicing cutter serve as a gauge and guide for the slicing cutter in the cutting operation thereof, and a hand grip fixed to the slicing cutter to extend laterally therefrom opposite to the connection oi said cutter with the trame.
2. In a mortise cutting deviceE a trame of channel shape in longitudinal section, cutters fixed within the iframe with the cutting edges xtended beyond the bottom edge ot the iframe7 a slicing cutter pivotally mounted on and at the end ot one angle wall ot the Jframe to have movement into and out oi the open side of the frame transversely ot and in a plane with the cutting edge oit the cutters fixed 'n the frame, the angle wall opposite to that to which the slicing cutter is mounted being extended outward andcurved inward tor the engagement of and guiding of the slicing cutter.
3. In a mortise cutting` device as claimed in claim 2, a longitudinally adjustable gauge member adapted tor connection with the angle walls of the frame to extend laterally therefrom.
l. A mortise cutting device as claimed in claim 2, wherein the bottom edge ot the trame is iianged outward to form an abutment to limit the depth of the mortise cut and the frame walls arranged at the open side of the frame with portions to extend downward beyond the bottom edge thereof to serve as gauges for the width of the mortise.
5. ln a mortise cutting device, a frame ot channel shape in longitudinal section to constitute a side wall and end walls of the trame, cutter blades ot a width greater than the height ot' the frame, said blades being :fixed upon the walls ot the frame with the cutting edges extended beyond the bottom ot the trame a distance equal to the depth of the cut and extended from the top of the trame to adapt the blades tor engagement ot a striking member, a slicing cutter substantially oi rectangular shape to conform to the space within the trame and having a cutting edge along one side edge and an end edge to adjacent the back edge, said blade having an ear extended therefrom at the juncture ot the end cutting edge with the back edge whereby it is pivota-lly mounted on an end wall oii the trame to have movement transversely ot the trame and in the plane of the cutting edges oi the cutter blades mounted on the trame and in a direction toward and away Jfrom the open side of the frame, and an operating handle fixed to said cutter blade to extend laterally therefrom in the plan of the back edge of the gouging blade and opposite to the pivot ear.
6. A mortise cutting device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the bottom ot the Yframe is flanged outwardly to serve as an abutment to limit the depth ot the cut :made by the cutters carried upon the sides of the frame, and one wall ot the trame having an ear extended laterally therefrom in a plane with the bottom oit the frame for the pivotal connection of the ear of the gouging cutter.
7 A mortise cutting device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the end wall opposite to the ear carrying wall is extended outward and curved inwardly to serve as a guide for the gouging cutter during the cutting operation.
