Nature and Objects of the Invention.

My invention relates to a new and useful construction of sofa capable of being converted into a bedstead, as hereinafter explained.

General Description.

Figure 1 shows my piece of furniture in condition as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a partially-sectionized elevation, showing the same in the act of being opened out. Fig. 3 represents the same opened fully out so as to take the form of a bedstead. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sections of parts hereinafter described.

A A' are the end pieces of my base or stand, connected by a rectangular frame, B, and supported on legs C. The arms D are hinged to the front of the stand at E, and are secured in their erect position by pins F that are inserted in orifices G in said arms, and into orifices H in tongues I, which, rising from the stand, enter sockets Jin the under sides of the said arms. The end pieces of my said stand are provided on their inner sides with two tongues, K, which, occupying grooves l in the ends of the frame of a mattress which constitutes the lower member L of my sofa-seat, hold the same in proper position, yet permit it to be slid out or in.` Hinged to the rear edge of mattress L is the upper member M of my sofa-seat. From the front edge of the member M depends a verge-board, N, having a tongue, O, which, in the closed condition of the article, occupies a socket, P, in the front rail B of my stand. This tongue may be made of spring steel or brass in the form of a catch, as represented, so as to engage under a lip or projection insaid socket, and be liberated by pressing on a knob, which may have the eX- ternal aspect of an ornamental boss, of Wood or other material. The wedge O may be given a bulging or any other ornamental form, 4and may depend sufficiently to screen the bag from view. The back R is secured, by pivots S, to the rear posts D of the arms, and when opened out assumes the horizontal position, so as, in conjunction with the unfolded mattress L M, to constitute a bed whose longitudinal extension is fore and aft or across the width instead of length of sofa-stand. The mattress is held in its horizontal vposition by dowels T that enter sockets U in the mattress L by ears V, which rest upon the stand, and by legs W, which, being hinged to slotted slides X, are capable of being drawn out and dropped down, as represented; and these legs, in the closed condition of the article, are capable of being folded out of sight, as shown in Fig. l; and in said closed condition the ears V, resting against the rear legs, serve to hold the back to its proper angle. Depending from the edges of the frame B is a bag, Y, having a wooden bottom, Z. This bag may be of capacity sufficient to hold all the necessary bedding, and when not required for this purpose, or even after receiving its charge of bedding, if not very bulky, may be held to an elevated position by means of buttons a, or other means, so as to be placed wholly out of view.

Operation.

My article is converted from the sofa form to that of a bedstead by the following process: The pins F being Withdrawn, the knee of the operator is pressed against the seat, and at the same time the back lifted and drawn over to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and its outer extremity (foot of the bed) is supported bythe legs, which are drawn out and dropped down for that purpose, the ears at the same instant coming to rest upon the now inverted arms. The bed-clothing having been removed from the bag Y, the now unfolded seat is then pushed forward so as to engage the dowels K, and the pins being reinserted in the tongues serve to support the upper end or head of the mattress (formed by the now inverted member M) at any desired angle, or in the horizontal position, if preferred, by the insertion of the pins into the proper one of a series of orifices, c, in said member.
