LYMAN W. WELCH, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming' part 0f Letters Patent N0. 672,813, dated April 23, 1901.
Application filed August 4, 1900. Serial No. 25,861. KNo model.)
' and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rfolding beds, and more particularly to that class in which the folding section is divided transversely and hinged; and its object is to provide means whereby the case can be made with legs and a clear space left beneath the same without raising the pivot on which the bed turns or increasing the. total height of the case, to dispense with the base-board at the front deemed necessary in such beds as usually constructed, to provide an improved head-section for receiving the pillows when the bed is folded or closed, and to provide the device with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and part-icularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention consists in a case having a front open throughout and an open bottom and a folding section pivoted to the ends of the case and forming when closed the front of the case from top to bottom. The invention also includes the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective of a device embodying my invention as it appears when closed; Fig. 2, the same in vertical section from front to rear and on a larger scale; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the same when open, and Fig. 4. a detail in plan view with parts omitted.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the ends of the case, cut away at the bottom and provided with legs, as at A. These ends are rigidly connected at the top by the top Band a cross-bar C connects the ends at the rear, near the bottom. The ends have no fixed connection at the front, the front of the case being left open, except as closed by the folding section. At the rear of each side are vertical ways D to engage and be traversed by rolls J at the upper angles of a headboard II, the lower edge of which headboard is rigidly attached at right angles to a horizontal head-section G, having its forward edge hinged at Q to the upper edge of the inclined head end P of the bodysection E, which latter is pivoted near its head end atK by bolts provided with jam-nuts K', by means of which bolts the sides A are securely connected at the front by said bodysection without the use of a base or other means for the purpose. By making the head end of the body-section inclined, as shown, the front when closed is raised a considerable distance from the floor, as shown in Fig. l, without raising the location of the pivots, increasing the total height of the case, or raising the bed too high when opened out. The headboard H and head-section G are rigidly connected by bracket-braces I, and the headsection extends the bed beyond the pivot to complete the length of the folding section and at the same time aord a suitable support for the pillows when the bed is open and a receptacle to receive the pillows when the bed is closed. The head-section and headboard both rise and fall Without practically other change of position. F is a foot-section hinged to the foot end of the body-section E at O, adapted to fold upon the same, and is shorter than the body-section by about the height of the headboard H. The foot end of the body-section is supported when open by a divided portion L of the front, hinged thereto and supported in vertical position by a latch M, having a recess to engage a crossbar N on the body-section.
From the foregoing description the operation of my device will be readily understood without further description.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a folding bed, a case having a front open throughout and an open bottom, and a foldingI section pivoted to the ends of the case, and forming when closed the front of the case from top to bottom, substantially as described.
TOO
2. In a folding bed, a case having an open supporting the .case on each side, and a folding section pivoted to the ends and forming.
front and bottom and a folding section piv oted to the open ends said section having a solid bottom and headboard and forming, When closed, the front and bottom of the case, substantially as described.-
4. In a folding bed, a case having an open front, a section pivoted therein, and a headsection pivoted to the section first specified, said head-section forming, when the bed is opened, an extension of the bed, substantially r 5 as described.
5. In a folding bed, a case having an open front, a bed-section pivoted therein, and a head-,section pivoted to the section first specifled, said head-section carrying a headboard, 2o substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
