Description

J. W. DALMAN. BRAKE BEAM SAFETY HANGER. APPLICATION FILED IIAII. 22. Isn.
Patented Feb. uQ5, 1919 JOI-IN BALT/IAN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES or CHICAGO, ILLfNoIs, A
CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BRAKE-BEAM SAFETY-HANGER.
Saecicationof Letters Patent.
llatented Feb. 25, 1919.
Applicationv .fed March 22, 1917. Seri-11 No. 156.594.
To all yw/iom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. DALMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oli Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brak'e-Ieam Safety-Hangers, ot which the following is a specification. A
My invent-ion relates to car brakes and has particular reference to a novel emergency support for brake beams.
In the prior patents to Elliott No. 1,147,- v793 and lVeinland No. 1,165,733 different forms of emergency supportingr devices were disclosed. The present invention has :for its object the provision o-f a supporting device so connected to the car truck as to enable its economical manufacture and simple operation.
In practically all of the forms of car trucks at present commonly in use provision is made for the connection of adjacent side frames by means of a commercial channel or similar standard shape. As a means for supporting,` the bar, which is adapted to underlie the brake beams, I provide loops which may be struck out of the web of the connecting member. Iret'erably two loops are' provided at each channel; that is, at each side of the truck.
bar is longitudinally slidable in these .loops and is suitably retained in proper position. l
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanyingr drawings wherein,
Figure l is asectional view through' a truck to which my invention has been applied;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the channel shaped spring plank to which the emergency supporting bars have been applied;
Fig. 3 is. an edge View thereofl partly in section, and,
Fio. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 showing a slight modiication.
In the drawings' it will be seen that the side frames. l0 are connected by means of a channel shaped spring plank having a web 1l, and flanges 12. Near each end ot' the channel l. provide a pair ot loops 13, which. 1n this instance are shown as being formed from metal displaced from the web l1 of the channel. Ol' course the loops ma \Y be provided in anolher manner if desired. A bar 1l is located in the loops being' longitudinally lslidable therein and ol such vided therein suitably shaped to accommo` v date a bar in the form ot' an angle 20. A bar of this shape rives zgreater resistance to bending for the same weight of metal.
Other modifications such as may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art may be made without departure from the spirit of my invent-ion.
I claim:
1. In a car truck. the combination ot' side frames, a spring plank connecting the side fran'ies, said plank being provided with loops struck out from the horizontal portion thereof, and a bar mounted lin the loops at each end of said plank, substantially as described.
2. Ina car truck, the combination of side franies, a transverse channel connecting same, a pair ot loops struck out of the web thereof, a bar mounted in said loops, and
'nleans for removably retainingthe bar in
