One object of `the present invention is to provide a supporting deviceffor thebrake-beam which permits `the` brake-beam to `be yconveniently and quicklylremoved and installed.
Another object `of the invention'is'to provide a supporting device forthebrake-beam which includes a wear member ywhich 'canibe readily replaced when` itbecomes worn.
Another object is `to provide "a support for the brake-beam which eliminates the hangers now generally used.
Other objects orthet invention wi from the detailed description.
The invention consistsA in theseveral novel features hereinafter set `forth `andmore particularly dened by claims at 'the conclusion hereof. "c I In the drawings lis a horizontal section of one side-frame Aofatruck` and the supporting devices for the `ends of a pairof brakebeams adjacent one ofl the side-iramesftaken on line I-I of Fig.' 2, the itruck springs being omitted. `Ili'ig..2 is aisectionl taken onsline 2-2 of Fig, 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4is a perspective'ofthe extension on the' side-frame and the bracketfor mounting the supporting devices `for the ends of a pair of brake-beams. Fig. 5 is `aperspective ofr the yoke which fits `aroundmthebrake-beam and is slidably mounted and detachably secured in the bracketon the side-frame. Fig'. 6'is a perspective of the pin for `detachably holding the yoke in the bracket and `securing the 'yoke and brake-beam together. I l
The invention is exemplified in `a railway truck comprising a castrsideirame III,` a spring bolster III mounted in the zside-'irameg a springplank I2 Xed to the sdeeframe, truck springs appear I3 between the spring plank IZ and the bolster l Each :side-frameis providedwith means for supporting the ends of a pair of brake-beams. Each `side-'frame has an inward and transverse extension or vmember which underlies the springy plank I2, pedestals 2I at the inner ends ofmmember 20 and at the sides of the springplank, and upper and `lower substantially parallel longitudinally extending arms or members 22 and 23. The upperend of each pedestal 2| may be connected to the side-frame by a web .24." Arms 22 and 23 form a guideway :for slidably `supporting one end of the `brake-beam. Each pair of arms 22 and 23 and pedestal 2| are disposed `inwardly of the outer ends of the brake-,beam I1, and constitute a bracket for slidably supporting a brake-beam independently of `the usual `suspei'ision links.
Eachvbeam-supporting device comprises a yoke A25 which has asemi-circular Jportion 25 which fitsl around `one side of `tension or` truss member I6 of the brake-beam and upper and lower members 2l and 28 which fit and are slidable between-the arms 22 and 23 of-thebracket on theviside-frame. The compression `inemlie: I5 of the brake-beam extends` transversely through the forked portion of the yoke and is conned vertically between membersZ'I and 28. Ribs 32 are; provided on arms 22 and r23 'for conning the yokes 28 transversely in theqbracket. A pin 30 `extends through vertically aligned holes 3l `in the yokeand detachably secures the yoke and the tension and compressionA members of the brake-beam 'tog-ether. `lT-in- 3B eXtendsthrOugh an elongated 'slot 3| in the upper arm lfor sldingrnovement of the yoke longitudinally of the truck, and detachably connects the yoke to `thelbracket. Pin 30 serves asa removable key to permit the separation or' the yoke vfrom the supportingfbracket. The yoke and pin constitute a clevis `which 4is detachable from the brake-beam arrd detachable from arms 22 and 2.3. Awear-plate 2-3a isremovably fitted on the top of arm 23.
- A spring-34 'is provided for shifting each end -of the brake-beam to its brake-releasing position. Spring 34 is coiled around a bolt 35, the `inner `end of` which is provided with a head 36 which extends through and `has a head held by the inner side of, the pedestal 2l. Bolt 35 extends through `a hub `38 on the upper end of pin 33 which is engaged by the 'inner end of spring "34. HAnut 31 engages the outer end of spring 34 to keep it compressed and is adapted to adjust the pressure 'of the spring 34. This bolt is removable 'from `the supporting bracket so it can be withdrawn from the pin 30 and so that the latter can be removed. When the brake-beams are shifted to apply the brake-shoes I8 to the wheels I4, springs 34 will be compressed by the usual equalizing and shifting mechanism for the brakebeams, and the yokes 25 and pins 30 will be slidably shifted in the brackets on the side-frame against the force of said springs. Each pin 30 will move with its associated yoke and end of the brake-beam. When the brake-shifting mechanism is released, springs 34 will shift the brakebeam, yokes and pin 30 toward the longitudinal center of the truck. A characteristic of this coni struction is that the yokes 25 serveas wear members which can be readily replaced and vdetached from the brake-beam upon removal of the pins 30. When the nut 31 is screwed off bolt 35 the latter can be withdrawn from pedestal 2l and hub 38 of the pin, whereupon the pin will be free,V
to be withdrawn from the yoke. Upon removal of pin 30 as aforesaid, the yoke can be withdrawn from arms 22 and 23, and then the brake-beam can be released, so that it will not be necessary to jack up the car or remove the side-frame from the truck for repair or replacement of the safetysupporting devices. This construction facilitates repairs or replacements when such are necessary, and also facilitates assembly of brake-beam and beam-supporting devices. By removal of the yoke as before described, the brake-beams, after the brake-shoes have been removed therefrom, can be moved longitudinally to clear the brackets on the side-frames and then dropped between the side-frames. By reversing the operation, the brake-beams can be easily and quickly assembled with the bracket and the yokes, and secured in the brackets by pins 30. The springs normally hold the beams spaced away from the'wheels so the brake-shoes will not engage the wheels, to avoid necessary brake-shoe wear. The supporting devices for the brake-beam render the suspension links now commonly used unnecessary.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the 'spirit and scope of the invention.
