invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quit-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cufl' buttons of the class constructed of two members detachably connected together, and theobject of this invention is to provide a cutt button Whose members may be readily connected to and disconnected from each other and are of a class more particularly designed for retaining soft cuffs; each member otthe button having both an inner and an outer head. the inner of each being of a size to be passed through the button-hole of the ciili. and at the same time remain in the cuff e'ven when the members are disconnected one "from the other.
A further objectpf the invention is the provision of linkmember loosely retained at one end in one, of the button members, the'lopposite button member being provided with means for releasably retaining the free end of this connecting link, whereby the buttons are permitted a tree angular motion relative to each other so as to accommodate themsel to the natural shape or formation of the cut? when the parts are secured together.

Referring to the drawings, the shank members 10 and 11 respectively, of the opposite button members are similarly formed, each being in a tubular shape having its outer end slightly reducedas-at 12 to form a shoulder and be passed through and rolled over on the inner side of the back plates 13 and 14 of the opposite outer head members to which plates ornamental fronts 27 and 28 of any design may be attached.
The inner end of each of these tubular posts is enlarged to provide a recess 15 for the reception of members, presently de scribed, the end of each being turned outward to provide a flange 16 over which the edge of the inner cap 23 is rolled.
A hardened spring ring 17 is loosely mounted in the recess of the button shank 11 and a cap 18 concaved as at 19 on its outer face is secured to this flange 16, to hold the ring in place. This cap is provided with a suitable central opening through which the head of the link is guided and conducted by this concavity of this face into engagement with this spring ring 17.
In order to provide a very loose connection between these link members so as to permit them to be positioned at an angle one to the other, and conform readily to the natural shape of the cufl when held thereby, l have provided a link member 21 which is preferably formed of hardened steel, one end 22 of this link being enlarged and flattened on its outer end, said enlarged portion fitting loosely in the rccess 29 of the shank member 10, the. flattened portion serving as a seat to rest on the. bottom of this recess "29 and so prevent the link from tipping over or moving from side to side while the bottom members are being pressed together to force the ball end of the link into engagement with the spring ring. The outer edge of the cap 23 is rolled over that of the C01.- responding flange on the inner end of shank 10, the cap being provided with an opening 24 of a. size to permit a free movement of the link and to prevent the link from being entirely disengaged from its post. ' The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical. changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A separable button comprising a pair of separable members, each having a short shank: with an ornamental head at its outer end, one of said shanks being recessed in its outer end and a link member having an enlarged flat head at one end loosely retained in said recess and also having an en-- larged head at its opposite end and spring means in the corresponding end oi the opposite shank for releasably engagingsaid enlarged free end of said link member.
A separable cuff button comprising a pair of separable members, each having a short shank witlran ornamental head at its outer end and a recessed portion at its inner end, a spring ring loosely retained in the recess of one member and a link member having one end loosely retained in the recess of the opposite member, said link having .a head on its free end adapted to re leasahly engage said ring.
3. A separable'cufl button comprising a pair of separable members, each having a short shank with an ornamental head on its outer end and a recess on its inner end, a
spring ring loosely retained in the recess of one shank, and a link member having an enlarged flat head at one end loosely retained and adapted to seat in the recess of the other shank, the free end of said link being enlarged and adapted to enter and be releasably retained by said spring ring.
