To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Pnasn', a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Pumps; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rFhe present invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as pumps and more particularly has reference to a revolving pump.
it is the primary aim and object of the present invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character in the form of a sectional Vcolumn through which water or other liquid is raised, owing to the centrifugal action upon the rotation of the column.
lit is an equally important object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein a vertical series of superposed bowls are designed in a novel form for assuring of the raising of water from the bottom of the well to the storage tank at the top of the supporting frame.
More particularly this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein improved means is employed for preventing vibration of the bowls during rotation of the main shaft, thus assuring of an efficient operation of the device.
lit is a more specific object of this invention to provide a device of the above nientioned character wherein improved means is employed for deecting the liquid into the retainer or basin at the top of each bowl so that water may be subsequently carried into the bowl positioned thereabove.
lt is a further object of this invention to provide a pump of the above mentioned character which is simple in contruction, thoroughly reliable and efcient in purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.

rl`he invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of ele-1 ments and the arrangement of parts which will be eXem liied in the construction hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be limited in theappended claims.
The invention is' clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawing, there is provided a frame indicated in its entirety by the numeral l being preferably of an open-worked character and desirably rectangular in cross section. A main vertical shaft 2 is now employed and has the lower end thereof journaled in the base of theframe as at 3, while carried with this shaft is the improved column composed of vertical series of superposed and communicating bowls4 indicated generally by the numeral 4.
ln the present instance these bowls are' desirably constructed in sections of which each consists of preferably three, namely, a lower section 5, an intermediate section 6, and an upper section 7 and the adjacent edges of the sections 5, 6 and 7 are arranged in abutting relation with each other, while the walls -of the sections are cylindrical and radually taper from the upper section to t e lower section, as indicated in the drawing, for facilitating the proper raising of water therethrough in a manner that will hereinafter become apparent. Formed at opposite points on the inner surface of the walls ofthe lower section 5 and vertically thereof are opposed pairs of ribs 8, the upper ends of which are joined with the radial arms 9 of a spider 10 which latter is formed with a central bearing 11 for disposition about the shaft. Formed with this bearing l1 is a collar 12 carrying a set screw 13 for the rigid connecting of the lower section 5 to the shaft 2. The inner edges of the ribs 8 are tapered toward their lower ends and lll@ are formed integral with an inclined annular iiange 14. An exteriorly extending annular flange 15 projects'outwardly from the upper edge of the flange 14 and also beyond the outer surface of the walls of the secton 5 and coperates with the flange 14 in preventing the air being drawn-into the column during the actuation of the pump. The intermediate section 6 is formed on the inner surface of its walls and vat opposite points with opposed pairs of longitudinally arranged and inwardly extending ribs or blades 16 the upper and lower ends of which are formed integral with the arms 17 of spiders 18, the latter in turn .being formed with certral bearings 19. The upper bearing 19 is formed integral with a. collar 20 to which is mounted a set screw 21 for the rigid connecting of the section 6 to the said shaft 2 so that the ribs 16 aline with the ribs 3 as indicated in the drawing. Opposed pairs of vertically extending ribs 22 are formed integral with the inner surface of the walls of the section 7 and extend inwardly, the lower ends thereof being formed integral with the arms 23 of a spider 24 which is formed with a central bearing 25 for disposition about the shaft 2. The upper ends of the ribs 22 are rigidly connected with a receiver or basin 26. The bottom of this basin is formed with an opening 27 while integral with the bottom and about the opening is an upstanding collar 28 to which is mounted a set screw 29 for the clamping of the upper section 7 to the shaft 2 so that the ribs or blades 22 aline with the ribs or blades of the sections 6 and .5.
In order to direct the water or other liquid that has been raised in the lower bowl 4 of the column into the basin 26 carried within the upper part of the upper section 7 of the lower bowl, an annular water pocket or guard 30 is secured by suitable fasteners 31 to the upper edge of the section 7 and terminates at its upper edge in an inwardly extending annular flange 32 which is disposed in close relation to a' transverse partition or plate'33 carried in the frame 1. Mounted in diagonal slots 34 in the plate 33 are the upper reducedends 35 of depending and tangentially arranged deflectors 36 designed for directing into the basin 26, the wateror other liquid which passes into the pocket 30 from the lower body 4. In this connection it is to be observed that the lower section 37 of the upper bowl is arranged through an opening 38 in the plate 33 and is positioned within the basin 26 as indicated in Fig. 1 and the construction of the lower section 37 as well as the intermediate section 39 of the upper bowl 4 is substantially similar to the construction of the lower section 5 and intermediate section 6 respectively of the lower bowl 4 so that the water which is received in the basin 26 is subsequently car- Laeaeav.
ried upwardly through the upper bowl 4 As regards the upper section 40 of the upper bowl 4, however, it will be noted that instead of providing the basin the upper edge of the upper section 40 is formed with an outwardly flared lip 41 which rests on the inner wall 42 of avcircular or annular tank 43 which is carried on the upper end of the frame 1 so that the water which issues from the upper section 40 will be received within this tank. The tank is provided with a cover 44. Mounted centrally of the cover 44 is a ballbearing 45 for the upper end of the shaft 2. A valve controlled outlet 46 is led from the storage tank 43 so that the water or other liquid may be removed from this tank when desired. A pulley wheel 47 is connected to the upper projecting end of the shaft 2 to facilitate rotation thereof.
.As intimated, improved means have been provided for preventing vibration of the lower section or bowl 4 of the column and in reducing this feature of the invention to practice an annular band or track 48] is rigidly connected to the outer surface of the section 7 while engageable with this track 48 are flanged wheels 49 carried with vertical shafts 50, the upper ends of which are journaled in bracket 51 which project from the frame while suitable adjusting devices 52 are mounted in these brackets or bea-rings 51 for regulating the position of the wheels 49 and by this arrangement vibration of the 'upper part of the lower bowl 4 is obviated, during rotation of the shaft 2, as is apparent.
The mode of operation of the present invention may be reviewed as follows Assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and indicated in the drawing, upon rotation of the shaft water will be drawn within the lower section 5 of the lower bowl and will be raised upwardly owing to the tapering form of the walls of the sections 5, 6 and 7 of the bowl 4 and lbecause of the arrangement of the ribs in these sections which coperate to produce a centrifugal action for -the raising of the water.. The water which is raised to the top of the section 7 passes into the water pocket or guard 30 and is directed by means of the deflector 35 into the receiver or basin 26 where it is subsequently drawn upwardly through the upper bowl 4 and finally deposited within the storage tank 43.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely diterent embodiments of this inveni tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following' claims is intended to cover all the generic and s ecc features of the invention herein descri ed and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
lrlbaving thus fully described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A pump of the character described including a frame, a vertical shaft journaled therein, a column carried by the shaft and Ycomprising a plurality of superposed and communicating cylindrical and tapering bowls, each bowl being formed in sections, ribs carried by the inner faces of the tapering walls of the sections, and means for rigidly connecting the sections to the shaft so that the ribs aline with each other.
2. A pump of the character described including a frame, a vertical shaft journaled therein, a column carried by the shaft and comprising a plurality of 'super-posed and communicating cylindrical and tapering bowls, each bowl being formed inl sections, ribs carried by the inner faces of the tapering wall of the sections, means for rigidly connecting the sections to the shaft so that the ribs aline with each other, a basin disposed within the upper section of each lower bowl and'having the lower end of the adjacent upper bowl positioned therein, a guard .carried by the upper edge of the upper section of each lower bowl, means in each guard for deflecting liquid into the adjacent basin, and a stora e tank .connected to the top of the frame an into which liquid passes subsequent to being raised.
