PLASTIC TIE.`
; Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EMIL LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitla, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plastic Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a plastic tie and has special reference to ties for railroads that are provided with efficient reinforcements to rolong the life of the tie.
n e object of this invention is the production of a plastic tie wherein a plate eX- tends longitudinally thereof to prevent the tie from cracking or breaking when in use.
Another object of thisv invention is the production of a plastic tie including aretaining plate upon its upper portion for allowing bolts to be applied to the plate for holding the rails against displacement, this plate having its ends overlapping the ends of the tie body to receive the bolt carried by the plastic body, thus holding the plate in a set position upon the tie body.
Broadly stated, this invention consists of a plastic tie body, a reinforcing plate extending longitudinally of the body and being positioned within this body, a sleeve carried Within the body adjacent the plate, a retaining plate positioned upon the top of the body and having retaining notches formed therein, parallel projections on the ends of the plate fitting upon the ends of the body of the tie, and a bolt passing through said sleeve and said ends and holding the retaining plate in a set position upon the tie body.
One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and isvillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the tie body, portions of the same being broken away, and a part of the casing shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the tie Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of the reinforcing plate, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary-inverted detail perspective view of the retaining plate.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, about to be described, it will be seen that the tie consists of an elongated plastic body 5 which is substantially rectangular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 2,
although it is elongated as shown in Fig. l, the invention being of the same shape substantially as an ordinary tie now in use.
In order to reinforce this plastic body 5 there is provided a reinforcing plate 6, which is elongated and is provided with openings 7 formed therein, as shown clearly in Figs. l to 3 inclusive.
This plate is formed in the plastic body at the time the same is being constructed, whereby the plastic material will pass through the openings 7 formed in the plate 6, thus causing the plate to be lirmly held and to also reinforce the plastic body 5, thus forming a substantially one-piece construction, and it is obvious that it will hold the body from cracking when in use.
The sleeve 8 is also formed in the plastic body 9 and extends longitudinally thereof. as shown in Figs. l and 2. It will be noted that this sleeve 8 is positioned adjacent the plate 6 and also assists in reinforcing this plastic body. The retaining plate 9 is of substantially the same length as the tie body 5 and is positioned upon the top thereof, as shown in Fig. l. This plate 9 has its ends bent at right angles thereto to form parallel projections l0 having central openings 1l. Therefore, it is obvious that the projections 10 lit upon the ends of the body 5 and the )penings l1 are in direct alinement with the sleeve 8. It should be noted that the ends of the body 5 are recessed, as indicated at 12, thus allowing the projections 10 to it within the recesses and form an even surface upon the tie.
At this time, the retaining bolt 13 is passed through the sleeve 8 and also through the openings 11 formed in the projections 10, extending slightly beyond the projections, as shown in Fig. 1 to receive the retaining nuts 14 thereon. Therefore, it will be seen that the plate 9 is bound in engagement with the plastic body 5 by the bolt which is carried by the sleeve, thus formin a unitary construction.
Tn the assembly of the device, it is obvious that when the plastic material is being poured into a mold, the plate 6 is also inserted in the mold as is the sleeve 8. After the tie has become hardened and is in condition for use,the retaining plate 9 is then applied to the body 5 and the bolt is passed through the sleeve and through the projections 10, thus forming a complete tie which is of a plastic construction and which is reinforced to prevent its breaking When in use, although it will be seen that the retaining plate allows suitable retaining bolts or other elements to be connected thereto through the notches 15 formed in the side edges thereof, thus holding the rails in engagement With the retaining plate 9, and preventing the rail from being accidentally displaced.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to What may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claim. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a tie of the class described, the combination of a plastic body, a reinforcing plate positioned within said body and having openings formed therethrough for allowing the Plate to be firmly held by said body, a sleeve extending longitudinally through said body, said body having recessed end portions, a retainin plate positioned upon said body and having notches in its side edges, the ends'of said plate being bent to form parallel projections, said projections having openings formed therethrough, said projections fitting Within the recesses of the ends of said body, thus providing even sur faces upon the ends of the body, and a bolt carried by Said sleeve and projecting through the openings in said projections, thus holding the retaining plate against displacement.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence oi' two Witnesses.
EMIL LUND.
