CLARENCE a. BLACK, or Nonrn LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
LIGHT-SHADE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE J BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Light- Shades; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to light shades, and
it relates more particularly to a combined shade and shade support of improved construction. i
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device of this character which may be applied to any electric light bulb of ordinary size and construction.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which admits of the shade being turned in every position from vertical to horizontal.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which may be turned horizontally into an infinite number of positions.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which may serve as a shade, a reflector and a light difl'user; and
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is very simple of construction and, therefore, which may be made at a comparatively low cost, and is not easily destroyed or injured by carelessness or accident.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the device applied to an electric light bulb, the shade being substantially in its vertical position;
Fig. 2 illustrates the device with the shade substantially in its horizontal position; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device substantially as shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the electric bulb and its adjuncts, being of ordinary construction, are not described in detail, these elements being obvious to those who are familiar with the art.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11,1919.
Application filed March 14, 1918. Serial No. 222,428.
The device which constitutes this invention comprises a substantially concavo-convex plate or combined shade and reflector 5, a depending support 6, and a supporting plate 7.
In the present embodimentof this invention, I have shown the plate 5 movably connected to the depending support 6 by means of a substantially U-shaped strap 8, the engaging elements 9 of which are in frictional contact with the depending support 6.
This support is preferably formed of spring wire and comprises two arcuate'or bowed shade-supporting elements 10; a loop or spring element 11, which constantly tends to press the shade-supporting elements 10 into frictional engagement with the support-engaging elements 9; and plate-engaging elements 12, 13 and 14:. The plate-engaging elements 12 and 13 extend through eccentric apertures in the plate 7, while the plate-engaging elements 14 are in the form of hooks and embrace one edgeof the plate 7. By this connection of the support 6 and the supporting plate 7, they are securely united without the use of solder or the like.
It will be seen that the plate 7 is centrally apertured at 15, this aperture being sufficiently large to receive the upper portion of the upwardly tapering light bulb, but not sufficiently large to allow the lower portion of the bulb to pass therethrough, and therefore, the shade support may be very quickly and easily placed on a light bulb by removing the latter from its socket and then placing the upper part of the bulb through the opening 15 and replacing the bulb in the socket. When thus supported on the bulb, it will be seen that the lower portion of the support 6 extends under the bulb, while itsand 2, and it also may be adjusted to an inclined position in which its upper edge overhangs the upper end of the light bulb.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that this device is not only useful as a light shade, to cause a shadow where light is undesirable, but it is also useful as a reflector, to throw light rays where more light is desirable. By turning the plate 5 into the horizontal position under the light bulb, as
shown in Fig. 2, the light rays are reflected upward and difi'used against the ceiling of the room in which the light is used, thereby producing a soft, mellow light when such is desirable.
Although I have described this embodiment of my invention in minute detail, it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to these exact details of construction and arrangement of parts, but that I am entitled to make such minor changes that do not constitute a departure from the inventive idea disclosed in the foregoing description and following claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A combined shade and shade-support comprising a bulb-engaging element adapted to embrace and be supported by an electric bulb, a pair of approximately parallel bowed and :sprin'gy shade-supporting I elements united with and normally depending from said bulb-engaging element and extending thereunder, :a shade, connecting means on the shade slidably connected to said bowed and springy shades-supporting elements, and a spring element normally pressing said bowed and springy shade-supporting elements into frictional engagement with said connecting means.
2, The combination with a shade provided with engaging elements, of a shade-support comprising a length of spring wire formed with a loop at its middle and also formed with substantially parallel bowed portions united with said loop, and a centrally and eccentrically apertured plate, the end portions of said length of wire extending through the eccentric apertures of the plate "and secured to the latter, said plate being adapted to receive an electric bulb through its central aperture, said engaging elements being frictionally engaged with said bowed portions and movable therealong to effect dili'erent angular adjustments.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
