EASEL-SUPPORT.
Application filed January 24, 1917. Serial No. 144,191.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 1
7 Be it known that I, EZRA KAPLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new'and useful Improvement in Easel-Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, andexact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to easel supports.
The objectof the invention is to provide an improved easel support which will be inexpensive to manufacture'and which will be positive in action. In supports of this class it is desirable to have the supporting leg or legs adjustable with respectto the board or frame, and my invention provides a novel construction of the connection between the supporting leg and the main board or frame whereby a positive connection may at all times be had but wherein this connection is readily adjustable for the various positions of the supporting board or frame.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one form in which my invention may appear.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a supporting frame and leg embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with part of the frame broken away to show the manner of connecting the hinge plate to the board or frame;
Fig. 3 is an isometric view of the hinge plate; and
F 1g. 4 is a similar view of the follower or clasp plate.
The supporting board or frame 1 is preferably made of stiff cardboard although it is obvious that wood or'sheet metal or the like may be employed. A suitable frame'or binding 2 indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 is adapted to inclose the edge of the sup porting board 1 for holding a suitable object upon the supporting board 1, such as a picture, a mirror or the like. A supporting leg 3 is pivotally mounted upon the back of the supporting board and is adapted to support the board 1 in such position or inclination as may be desired. The supporting leg 3 may also serve as a handle, as for instance where a mirror is placed upon the supporting board 1. The leg 3 is formed of wire v bent into a suitable form, preferably to provide the supporting feet 4 and 5 to give stability to the device. A'suitabl'e hinge plate 6 is mounted upon the'back of the board 1, this plate being provided with prongs ,7 formed upon the edges of the plate 6. These prongs extend through the supporting board Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 111211. 5, 1918. o
1 and pass through suitable slots 8 in a clasp plate 9 which is-mounted upon the front of the board 1 and are bent over as is shown in Fig. 2 to grip the supporting board 1 firmly and permanently.
The hinge plate 6 is provided with a pair of lugs 10 and 11'which are bent up from the ends of the plate andare pierced by holes 12 horizontally in line with each other for 'receiving the ends let and 15 of the leg 3. The
upper ends of each side of'the leg 3 are provided with U-shaped loops of thewire which comprises this'leg. The upper legs 14 and 15 of the U-shaped loops are placed axially in line andproject through the lugs or ears 10 and 11 which are bent up from the hinge plate 6. The other legs of the U-s'haped loops 16 and 17 are bent parallel to the legs 141 and 15 respectively and are brought axially in line with each other resting against the peripheries of. the lugs 10 and 11 respectively. The portions 16 and 17of the ends of the supporting leg 3 are held together in axial'alinement by means of the sheet metal clasp 18. This sheet metal clasp is provided with projecting lips 19 and 20 which extend back of the edge of each of the lugs 10 and 11 and thus axial displacement of the wires 11 and 15 is prevented. This may also be accomplished by welding the bottom of the U shaped extensions together andby providing an oflset in the wire legs 16 or by other means.
The periphery of each of the lugs 10 and 11 is made circular in outline and a number of "curved seats or sockets 21 are'provided for engagement by the legs 16 and 1 7 of the U-shaped extension ontheends of the wire. The wire of which the supporting leg is composed has sufficient spring and thei distancebetween the legs 14 and 15is made such that the legs "16 and 17 engage firmly in the socket 21 formed upon the periphery of the lugs'lO and 11.
main with continual firmness. To change Y the position of the supportingleg 3 it is'neces'sary merely to overcome the frictional resistance and any desired settings may he made.
What I claim is:
1. In combination a supporting board comprising a thin sheet of relatively rigid material, a hinge plate secured to said sheet, a wire supporting leg pivotally secured to said hinge plate, said hinge plate having a lug bent up therefrom at substantially right angles, said lug having notches on its peripher'yfthe upper end of said wire leg having a U shaped spring extension, the outer leg of said U-shaped extension projecting through said lug and .the other leg of said extension resting against the periphery of said lug, said U-shaped extension forming spring means to yieldingly engage the notches on the periphery of the lug .to hold the parts in any desired position.
2. In combination a supporting board or frame, a hinge plate lying fiat on the back of said board, said plate having means for fastening the same to said board, a pair of lugs bent up at right angles to the plate at each end of said plate, said lugs having seal loped edges, a supporting leg of wire having its upper ends provided 'with U-shaped spring extensions, said extensions being placed with the free legs of the U in axial alinement, said free legs projecting through said lugs respectively, the other legs'of the U pressing against the scalloped peripheries of the lugs to hold the supporting legs in any desired position, and means for holding said U-shaped extensions rigidly in alinement. j
3. In combination a supporting board or frame, a hinge'platelying flat on the back of said board, said plate having means for fastening the same to said board, a pair of lugs bent up at right angles to the plate at each end of said 'plate,'said lugs having scalloped edges, a supporting leg of wire having its upper ends provided with U- shaped extensions, said extensions being placed with the free legs of the U in axial alinement, said free legs projecting through said lugs respectively, the other legs of the U pressing against the scalloped peripheries of the lugs, and means for holding said U- shaped extensions in alinement, said means preventing sldewise motlon of said U-shaped extensions with respect to said lugs.
7 4. In combination a supporting board, a hinge plate lying on the back of said board,
said hinge plate having prongs projecting Copies of this patent may be obtained fjor five cents each, by
7 Washington, D. 0.
through said board, a clasp plate cooperating with said prongs and lying on the other side of said board, said hinge plate having a pair of lugs'bent up therefrom, a wire leg having a loop at its lower end, having the free end of the wire bent into U-shaped spring extensions, said U-shaped extensions of Wire U-shaped spring extensions at its upper end lying parallel to the board or frame, means for holding said U-shapedex tensions rigidly together and in line with each other, the npper legs. of the passing through said'lugs and being pivoted therein, said legs having means preventing axial dis placement with respect to said lugs, said shaped spring extensions having frictional contact with the lugs in whichthey are pivoted for holding the leg in anyiadjusted' position.
6.' In combination, a supporting board comprising a thin sheet of relativelyjrigid material, "a hinge plate lying flat against said sheet, said plate having prongs stuck up from the edge thereof, said prongs passing through the board and holding the plate in position thereupon, said hinge plate having a semi-circular ear bent up therefrom at sub stantially right angles, said ear haying notches or serrations upon its semi-c rcular edge, a wire supporting leg having a U- shaped spring portionat its inner end and a shaft portion attached to one leg of theU, both legs of the 'U lying parallel to the supporting bOard, the said one leg of the U'engaging theserrated edge of the semi-circular ear, the other leg of the U passing through the semi-circular ear and being pivoted therein! I a In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my znarne this 20th day of January, A D. 191 I i i I EZR KAPLAN.
