Description

J. R. FLANNERY & E. I. DODDS.
STAY BOLT STRUCTURE.
Patented Feb. 4,,1919.
I [TNESSES -TEN FTQ.
JOHN ROGERS FLAN'NERY AND ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA,
STAY-BOLT To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN ROGERS FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to means for closing the outer end of the bearing sleeve over the head of a flexible staybolt,-the object of our invention being to provide means whereby the cap or closure of the bearing sleeve can be removed quickly to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes; that said cap or closure may be quickly replaced, and that the cap or closure shall normally be held firmly in place on the bearing sleeve.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figures 1 and 2 are longitudinal sectional views showing the parts in unlocked positions respectively; Figs. 3 and 41 are transverse sections on the lines 3-3 and H of Figs. 1 and 2, and Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detail views.
1 represents a bearing sleeve adapted for attachment to a boiler and having an interior curved surface 2 serving as a bearing for the rounded or spherical head 3 of a staybolt 4.
The bearing sleeve is formed with an extension 5 surrounding an annular seat 6 for a cap or closure 7, and said sleeve extension is provided with external segmental lugs or shoulders 8 for a purpose hereinafter ex plained. If desired, a Washer 7 may be interposed between the cap and its seat.
The cap or closure 7 may be made with a partly spherical recess 9 having such dimensions and configuration as to afford a proper clearance space for the head of the staybolt, and said cap or closure is provided centrally with an outwardly projecting recessed nipple 10 which enters a hole 11 in a head or cover member 12,-a portion of said hole be- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing enlarged whereby a shoulder 13 is formed, and the upper end of the recessed nipple is spun or upset over this shoulder as indicated at 1 1. The shoulder 13 may be beveled and the diameter of the hole 11 through which the nipple 10 passes is slightly greater than the diameter of the nipple, whereby a loose connection is effected between the cap 7 and head 12 to facilitate the accurate seating of the cap in the event of inaccuracies in the bearing face of the latter or its seat.
The head on cover member 12 (which may be made partly spherical in form) incloses the cap or closure 7 and may be provided with an angular or hexagonal portion 15 to receive a wrench. Inwardly projecting segmental shoulders 16 are formed within the peripheral portion of the head 12 to engage behind the segmental shoulders 8 on the bearing sleeve extension.
The head 12 is provided interiorly with a plurality of shoulders 17 (each of which may have a general V-shape) and a like number of smaller V-shaped shoulders 18 are formed on the cap or closure 7 to alternate with and to be engaged by the shoulders 17 in the head 12 and limit the turning movement of said head.
The cap or closure 7 is provided on its outer face surrounding the nipple 10, with cams 19 to cooperate with similar cams 20 on the inner face of the head 12.
When the cap 7 and head 12 shall have been assembled as previously explained, the same will be placed on the end of the bearing sleeve extension and the head will then be turned to cause the segmental shoulders 16 in the head 12 to move behind the segmental shoulders 8 on the bearing sleeve extension. During the turning of the head 12, its movement relatively to the cap 7 will cause the cotiperation of the cams 20 on the head with the cams '19 on the cap to force the cap down on its seat and bind the segmental shoulders 17 in the head against the segmental shoulders 8 on the bearing sleeve extension. During the turning movement of the head above described, the shoulders 17 therein will move between the shoulders 18 on the cap and their engagement with the latter will serve to limit the turning movement of the head, so that it will require only a limited reverse turning of the head to release the same and the cap and permit their quick removal to permit inspection of the head of the bolt for testing purposes.
It will be apparent that our improvements provide means which will facilitate the quick removal of the closure of the bearing sleeve, and its quick reassembling, and that when the closure is in place, the same will securely close the end of said hearing sleeve.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve and a cap or closure for the same, of a head inclosing said cap, means on the head cooperable with the hearing sleeve to removably connect these parts, and cooperating cams on the cap and in the head.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination With a bearing sleeve and a cap or closure for the same, of a head inclosing said cap, means on the head cooperable with the bearing sleeve to removably connect these parts, cooperating cams on the cap and in the head, and means for limiting the turning movement of the head relatively to the cap.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having segmental shoulders, of a removable cap for closing said bearing sleeve, a head having segmental shoulders to engage the segmental shoulders of the bearing sleeve, said head having a cam therein and the cap having a cam to cooperate with the cam in the head.
4:. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having segmental shoulders, of a cap to seat against said sleeve, a head inclosing said cap and having Copies of this patent segmental shoulders to engage the segmental shoulders of the bearing sleeve, said head having a cam face therein and said cap having a cam face thereon to engage the cam face in the head, inwardly projecting stop shoulders in the head and outwardly projecting stop shoulders on the cap to cooperate with the stop shoulders in the head.
5. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a cap or closure for the same, a head with which said cap or closure is loosely connected, cooperating cams between said cap or closure and head, means for connecting the head with the bearing sleeve, and means for limiting the turning movement of the head relatively to the cap.
6. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a cap or closure therefor having a recessed projection, a head inclosing said cap or closure and having a hole to loosely receive the recessed projection on the cap, a shoulder in said hole and the free end of the recessed projection upset over said shoulder, cooperating cams between said cap or closure and said head, segmental shoulders on the head to engage the segmental shoulders on the bearing sleeve.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
