WIRE-STRETGHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 41, 1919.
Application filed October 24, 1918. Serial No. 259,499.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. MCMU'R- PHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Casa Grande, in the county of Pinal and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wire stretchers, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is adapted to codperate with a wire holding means engaged to a supporting post or the like.
It is also an object of theinvention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a stretching arm or lever adapted to be supported for swinging movement and wherein the clamping action upon the wire to be stretched is increased by the pull upon the arm or lever.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved wire stretcher whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient {and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a wire stretcher constructed in accordance With an embodiment of my improved invention in applied position, a coacting post being shown in section;
Fig. 2- is a view in side elevation of my improved stretcher as herein embodied;
Fig. 3 is a view partly in section and partly in front elevation of the device as herein embodied; and
Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation of the device as herein embodied with the arm or lever removed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated member of desired dimensions and which has one end portion provided with a laterally directed extension 2 provided at its free extremity with the lug or lip 3 with which coacts the clamping arm or lever 4.. A wire strand W is adapted to be held between the arm or lever A and the lip or tongue 3 and serves as a fastening means whereby the strand W is supported by the post P or other support.
The end of the member 1 remote from the extension 2 has direct'conta-ct with a face of the post P or other support and is held in such position by a strand 5 of flexible material, preferably wire. The strand 5 is wrapped around the member 1 as indicated at a and disposed through an opening I) in said member 1. The strand 5 is also wrapped around the post P or other support. It is preferred that one of the loops 0 be directed through an opening 03 in the apex portion of a substantially triangular lug 6, the base of which contacts with a face of the post P or other support. The remainder of the loops 0 engage a margin of the lug 6 whereby the same is firmly held against the post P or other support. With the use of the lug 6 it has been fully demonstrated in practice that the member 1 will be positively held in its desired position upon the post P.
In practice a member 1 and its concomitant parts coact with each of the longitudinal strands of a wire fence, and in theevent of any of the strands W becoming slack a pulling arm or lever A is employed to take up the same after the arm 4 has been released fromthe strain. After the strand W has been properly tightened the arm or lever e is again brought into clamping action.
At a predetermined point midway its length the arm or lever A is provided with a laterally directed pin 7 whereby the same is pivotally engaged with an end portion of an elongated member 8. The member 8 has its opposite end portion provided with a laterally directed lug 9 which affords a jaw with which coacts the jaw 10 of the clamping cam 11. The cam 11 is provided with a rearwardly directed arm provided with a longitudinal slot 12 in which is extended a pin 14. carried by the adjacent end portion of the arm or lever A.
The pin 7 is of a length to extend beyond the member 8 and is removably seated within the opening 15 in the member 1.
The strand W is adapted to be positioned between the jaw 9 and the cam 11 and upon pull being imposed upon the arm or lever A in a direction toward the outer end of the member 1 the cam l1 will be caused to efiectually clamp the strand W against the jaw 9 and the continued pull upon the arm or lever A will result in the stretching of the strand W. If necessary after a pull has been imposed upon the arm A and a further operation is required the strand W will be held against retrograde movement by the arm or lever 4 as is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains.
After the strand W has been properly stretched the arm A and its concomitant thought to be obvious that a wire stretcher constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do cluding a member provided with a jaw, a.
clamping cam coacting with the jaw and mounted upon the member for swinging movement, said clamping cam being provided with a slot, a lever pivotally engaged with the" member, the pivotal connection between the member and lever affording means whereby said member and lever may be pivotally engaged with a support, said lever being provided with a part extending Within the slot of the cam.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
