IMPROVEMENT lN WIRE-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,676, dated October 14, 1879; application led June 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOORE SMITH, of the city and county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machlnes fOr Stretching Wire Fencing, Of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to stretch the wires Of the fence and hold them until. they are secured, and to operate on any' number of' wires without moving from its position, so that they can all be stretched Whether there be one Or more wires to the fence,A thus completing it at one Operation.
Its nature is shown in the accompanying drawings and description.

F is a drum Or windlass, hung in the usual way in two standards, I, supported on the base J, and having a ratchet, G,paw1 E, and crank H, or other means Of operation. To the drum Fis attached one end Of a iiexible connection, D., the other having a hook, P, Or other means Of attaching the holder B.' This holder is made with a cam, A, so arranged that the Wire can be laid in from one side when the cam is turned as at A', Fig. 1; and when Vturned tO position A it pinches with a irm hold, the Open space for the wire being shown in Fig. 2.
At d and d are shown connectionsfor similar cam holders for relievers to hold the stretched Wires.
L is a guy or anchor rope tO secure the stretch-er to one of the posts N N, between which it is placed. c', C, and c are the fence- Wires.
In Operation, the holder onD is first applied to wire C, and by turning the drum F the desired tension or stretch is Obtained, and held by the pawl E until the holder d; is applied to relieve it. D is then released and applied to c, which is stretched, and D relieved by the holder d. c is then stretched and held while the operator goes and secures the wire to the posts.
The stretching mechanism -is then moved and another section Of fence operated on, and when placed at the end Of a straight line Of fence or a corner a crow-bar stuck slanting into the ground, Or other anchor, is used for the guy L to hold by, instead Of a post.
Having thus fully described'my improved wire-stretcher,what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The Open-cam relieving-holders d d', in com bination with the stretching mechanism and its Open cam -holder B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
