Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,932, dated May 22, 1855.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LINUS YALE, of Newport, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and Ime proved Lock for Fireproof Safe, Bank- Vault, and other Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which Figure l is an external view of my improved lock. Fig. 2 is an internal view of ditto, the casing nearest the eye being removed, and the lock represented in a locked state. Fig. 3 is also an internal view of ditto, the lock being represented in an unlocked state. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the working parts of ditto, the casing of the lock not being shown, Fig. 8 is the line of section. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of ditto, (y) (y) Figs. 1 and 2, being the line of section. Fig. 6 1s also a transverse vertical 'section of ditto, (a) (z) Figs. l and 3, being the line of section.

' The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a sliding plate and frame constructed, arranged, and operating in connection with pins or rods and a key of peculiar construction as will be presently shown and described.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the casing of the lock, and
B, is the bolt whichslides or works between proper stumps (a) in the usual way.
The back end of the bolt B, has a recess or rebate (b) cut in it leaving a shoulder (c) at one side, and a ledge (d) at the back end of the bolt, between the shoulder (c) and the ledge (d) a frame C, is fitted. The side of this frame adjoining the shoulder (c) of the bolt has a series of holes made through it, and a corresponding number of holes are made into the shoulder (c) and rods (e) e) are fitted in .these holes, two rods in veach hole, the rods (e) in the holes in the shoulder (c) bearing against spiral springs (f), see dotted lines Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The rods (e) in the shoulder (c) are of equal length, but the rods (c) 1n the side of the frame C, are of unequal length, and the rods (e) project into the holes in the side of the frame C, and prevent said frame from being moved `upward in the bolt when the lock is in a locked state as will be presently shown.

The knob` His provided with a circular lplate (j) at its inner end, said .plate fitting in a circular recess in the inner surface of vone side of the casing, as shown in Figs. g4, 5, and 6. The bit (z')is attached to this plate, as shown in Fig. 4. The knobalso `has an oblique opening (lo) which passes rlongitudinally through it as shown clearly in Fig. 6.
The plate D, slides laterally a certain distance in the frame C, a ledge (l) on the under side of the plate strikes against the side (m) of the frame C, opposite the side in which the rods (e) are tted, and determines the length of the vibration of the plate. Through the front side of t-he casing there is made a rectangular opening E, see Figs. l, and 5.
F, is the key of segment form corresponding to the recess (g) in the plate D, the key has a series of holes (n) of different depths in one of its sides, see Figs. 5 and 6.
Suppose the lock to be in a locked state as shown in Fig. 2. It will be seen that the plate D and frame C are depressed or moved down and its back end bears against the stump (a) and prevents the bolt B, from being thrown back. The plate D, and frame C therefore must first be raised. The key F, is inserted in the opening E, and passes down into the recess in the plate D, the holes in the side of the key being opposite the rods (e). The depths of the holes (n) vary as before stated and correspond to the difference in length of the rods (e). The key being within the re.- cess (g) the knob E, is turned from left to right and the bit (i) first moves the plate D, toward the shoulder (c) and the key F, is pressed against the ends of the rods with the inner surface of the shoulder.
(e) which pass into the holes (n) of the key F, and the key forces the rods (e) in the shoulder (c) till their ends are lrilsh 1e plate D, and frame C may now be raised as the rods (e) are free from the holes in the side of the frame C, and the bit (75) acts upon the upper edge of the slot (fr.) in the plate D, and moves said plate upward free from the stump (a) and the bit then acts against the side of the slot and throws the bolt back as the ledge (l) acts against the side of the frame C, and the side (m) against the ledge (d) at the back end of the bolt B. When the bolt B, is thrown back the recess (g) is in line with the oblique opening (7o) in the knob E', and the key will pass out of the recess f and through the openin 7c into the y hJ d e g in waX to form a key. There is not sufficient space allowed to receive a requisite quantity of powder to blow oil the lock. The key is convenient to carry in the pocket, and the construction of the lock is extremely simple and economical to manufacture.
I do not claim separately the rods (e) (e) working in holes in the bolt B, and a sliding frame C, for that is an extremely old fastening and used in locks many years since, but
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. The sliding frame C, and plate D, in combination with the rods (e) (6') when constructed and arranged as herein shown, so that the plate D, will during the operatio-n of unlocking the lock cover the opening or keyhole E, in the casing before the bolt can be thrown back, thereby preventing the lock from being picked or impressions taken to form a key.
2. I also claim unlocking the lock by means of a segment key F, which is placed within a corresponding shaped recess (g) in the plate D, by passing said key through the opening or key hole E', and moved with said plate so that when the bolt B, is thrown back the recess (g) andv key F, will be in line with or opposite to the opening (7c) in the knob E, thereby allowing the key to pass out of the recess (g) through said opening (a) into the hand as herein shown and described.
