121p" ATTORNEY.
JOSEPHINENIMMERFROH, F LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'MlSS-JOSEPHINE NIM- nRrRoH, a su'bjeetof the Emperor ofAustria, residingat Lenox, countyof Berkshire, andYState of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Waving Devices, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in hair waving implements, particularly to types adapted to be electrically heated.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a waving implement in which the hair may be readily entered or removed without entangling, the implement being provided with means by which it is conveniently manipulated.
A further object is to provide an implement which may be used in either curling or waving the hair as may be desired.
This object is attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompany ing drawings, forming a material part of this specification and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the upper side of a hair waver made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 22 on Fig. l. a
Fig. 3 is the rear plan view of the imple ment.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. I
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the heating elements, parts being broken away to disclose the interior, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the handle and wire connections.
The implement shown consists of a flat plate 10, having side walls 11, joined by a cover plate 12, the same having a plurality of curved depressions 14 which will be hereinafter explained.
Connected within the chamber 15, formed between the upper and lower plates, is an electric heating element 18 containing helical coils 20 of wire having a high resistance, the wires 21 and 22, extending out through the handle 25 to a header 23 at its end, the header being so shaped as to be conveniently connected with the feed wires commonly employed.
The handle 25 is attached to a bracket 26, connected by screws 27 with the bottom Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 4., 1918. Serial No. 252,513.
L HAIR-WAVING DEVICE.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
plate 10; also attached to this base or bottom plate, by screws 29, are side plates28 carrying pivots 30 engagedin the opposite ends of bars 32 and 33, the bar 32 having upon its upper surface raised lugs 34 in which are firmly set waving prongs 36, of circular cross section adapted to be received in the outer recesses 14, and similarly, on the bar 33 is a central lug 35 carrying a prong 37 engageable in the central recess.
Formed with the bar 32, upon its outer side, is a lug 38 having a pair of ears 39 pivotally containing between them the end of a link 40, its opposite, inner end being pivoted by the screw 41 t one of the arms of a lever 42 fulcrumed upon the central screw 43 set in the plate 10.
The opposite end of the lever 42 is connected by another screw 41 with a similar link 45 pivoted between the cars 46 formed with the lug 47 connected with the bar 33. An arm 48 extends from the link 45 and has attached to it a tension spring 49 secured to the plate 10 so as to normally hold the prongs 36 and 37 pressed downwardly within their recesses.
In order to move the prongs outwardly, a lever 50 pivoted on the screw 51, set in the plate 10 and is attached by the pin 52 to the link 40, the lever having a bent end 54, pivoted by the pin 55 to the handle lever 56, fulcrumed on the pin 57 between lugs 58 extending from the handle.
When desirous of producing a wavy appearance of the hair, the prongs 36 and 37 are raised and held substantially vertical by operating the lever 56, as best shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Upon releasing the lever 56 the prongs are firmly drawn by the spring 49 into their corresponding recesses, the switches closed and current connected with the heater. Upon releasing the lever 56 the desired wave is obtained, it being understood that the body of the implement is held closely to the scalp during its application and the treatment continued as experience indicates.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hair dressing implement, the combination with a hollow frame and a handle engaged therewith having a plurality of concave open recesses formed in the upper surface of said frame, of bars pivoted transversely at the ends of said frame, prongs suited to the mentioned recesses secured in opposed staggered relation in said bars and a lever extending alongside of said handle for manipulating said prongs.
2. In a hair dressing implement, the com bination Iwith a frame having a hollow handle, of an electric heating element in said frame, means for conveying current to said heating element through said handle, a pair of bars pivotally engaged at the sides of said frame forming prongs secured in opposed relation in said bars, said prongs being re ceivable in recesses in said frame, and means extending adjacent to said handle for raising or lowering said prongs.
3. In a hair dressing implement, theccombination with a recessed hollow frame and a tubular handle secured thereto, of a heating element in said frame, electric conductors connected with said heating element passing through said tubular handle, bars rotatably mounted on each side of said frame, a lever pivoted below said frame, links connecting between said bars and the ends of said lever, an operating lever pivoted to and extending alongside of said tubular handle, operating connections between said operating lever and one of said links whereby said bars may be rotated, and prongs extending in opposite directions from said bars adapted to engage in the recesses of said frame. p
In testimony ,Whereof I have aflixed my signature.
J OSE' PHINE NIMMERFROH.
