Y instance, as applied to Tas rar' lrues. N
WARREN c. JERNEGAN, or CHESTER, AsoU'rH canonici!M rosal* FENCE-FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern.' i
Beit known thatI, WARREN G. JERNE- i GAN, citizen of the United States, residing teners and has for an object the provision this character which is susceptible of attachment to fence-posts of varying dimensions.
other object is to provide a fastener capable of securely retaining the fence wire Y1n engagement therewith while at the same time permitting prompt disengagement of the Wire therefrom, when such is desired; said fastener being formed of a single 'strip of'wire having post lengaging sections and twisted at one end into a fence-wire retaining clip.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully referred to in the followingdescription, and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, wherein Y Figure l is aperspective view of a fence post with the improved fasteners in place thereon,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through the post, and;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the fastener as it appears prior to its attachment to a fence post.
Although the fastener is equally applicable to posts of other designs and shapes, for purpose of conveniently describing the fastener, the latter is illustrated in the present a fence post 1 of recand provided with an en tangular shape ,The upper end 2 of the post larged base 2.
1s conical and flattened at its apex 4, while the corners 5 of the post are beveled throughout their length and shows to ad vantage how the securing arms of the fastener adhere and conforms to the contour of the post.
At appropriate places about the post are disposed the fasteners 6 which engage and retain the fence in close connection to the fence-posts and as contemplated by this invention these fence-fasteners or clips are built up from a single strand of wire, pref- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application `filed Ju1y`25, 1917. Serial No.` 182,707.
.to rest upon the bights 13 Patented Feb. a, 191e.
until substantially U-shaped, the arms 7 and 8 of the U are crossed and recrossed over each other at a suitable distance from the head of the U a t `9 From the twistonjoint 9 the respecand 'laterally of the loop portion 10' being at right angles to the latter. is bent extends in substantially vertical, spaced proximity to the rear portion l2, forming in conjunction with the latter, a hook member adapted to receive and support upon the bights 13 thereof the fence wires 14.
To provide a pocket or seat for the fence wire, the hoolr portions 11 and 12 have outwardly bulging lower portions 15 in which the wire is accommodated after its passage through the open end of the hook, and in order to prevent any casual dislodgment of the fence wire from its sea-t the passage between the head of the loop and the joint 9 is restricted; this being accomplished by the bending of the upper ends of the loop branches ll into angles substantially salient, with the vertex 16 of each disposed in closely spaced proximity to the joint 9 and yieldable in an outward direction when necessary to engage the hook with a fence wire. From the vertices 16 and 17 of the hook is extended to project away above the joint 9 so as whereby the fence wire 14 may be the more readily engaged and led between the portions 11 and l2 of the hook until it comes as previously deto provide a lip scribed.
The fastener is attached to the fence post 1 by means of the end strips 7 and 8, which encircle the post in opposite directions, as shown to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawings, until their respective extremities 18 and 19 meet upon preferably, the rearmost face of the post. These extremities are then interlocked by being looped or twisted about each other in such a manner as not only to join the strips 7 and 8 Ibut to so tighten the entire fastener about the post that it will remain rigid and stationary wherever placed on the post.
From the above description it may be seen from and slightly that the fastener herein provided is one which is most simple and economical in character, capable ofbeing loosened-for adjustment along ing any removal of the fastener-from the post although such removal may be instantly effected, whenever desired.
Having thus described the invention what l claim -as new and desire to protect by Letters `Patent is:
A post fence fastener,v comprising a single strand of wire having an intermediate portion bent back upon itself to form a U- Shaped hook and the reevends of thestrand twisted together *atl the rebent portion and Copies of this patent liniay b e obtained yforxve scents each, by addressing the the post without necessitatl extended in opposite directions, the U- shaped loop being ben to form a, fence wire engaging-'-liook, ya portionfof the loop near the ,free end being bent inward to coperate ywith:theY twisted part to prevent casual displacement Sof the fence Wire, and the 4 free end' of the'loop flaring outwardly'fromfthe @inademn teetiniony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two wiztneseezsl` f WARREN e. anni@aan.v
