' PARCEL-WRAPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed November 17, 1915. Serial No. 61,888.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GAs'roN J. Gonr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful. Improvements in Parcel-Wrappers, of'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in parcel wrappers and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is capable of economical manufacture and eflicient in use.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a parcel wrapper embodying my invention shown in extended form,
Fig. 2, a detail section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the wrapper showing it in closed position,
Fig. 4, an enlarged detail section taken on line 14 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5, a plan view of an adhesive clos ng flap which may be employed in con unction with the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a substantially rectangular sheet 6 of comparatively heavy paper and having a pocket 7 secured to the inner side thereof adjacent one end, said pocket being prov1ded w1th bellows sides 8 as indicated. A. securing flap 9 is secured to the other end of sheet 6 and is provided with an adhesive surface 10 for securingthe sheet in rolled tubular form. As shown in Fig. 2 the flap 9 is preferably secured to the inner side of sheet 6 then folded over the end and outer side thereof and refolded on itself to make a secure reinforced connection at this point. End closing flaps 11, 12 and 13 are arranged in each side of sheet 6 the line of juncture with said sheet being reinforced by a strip of cloth 14 being pasted thereover. The central flap 12 in each set is made outwardly divergent in form and is provided with a central crease 15 to facilitate insertion in the end of the tube formed by rolling sheet 6 about pocket 7 as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4:, said flap 12 exlpanding after insertion to interlock in the tu e.
In use an article desired to be shipped or otherwise transported is inserted in pocket 7 and the sheet.6 rolled or Wrapped about said pocket as indicated in Fig. 4, the flap 9 being secured by adhesive surface 10 as shown. The flaps 11, 12 and 13 are inserted within the ends of the tube thus formed either during the rolling process or after the rolling has been completed to close the ends of the tube thus formed and further insure against loss of articles from the pocket 7. Owing to the outwardly divergent form of flaps 12, they tend to expand in the tube and thus interlock therewith to hold the ends of the tube closed and sealed.
In Fig. '5 I have illustrated a form of adhesive securing flap which consists of a base or a body portion 16 provided with adhesive upon one side to extend the full width of sheet 6, said base being provided with a narrower tongue or extension 17 which is made narrow enough for insertion in an ordinary typewriter for writing an address thereon. Tongue 17 is also provided with an adhesive surface -18 for securing the wrapping in closed condition. When this form of sealing flap is employed the address is first written on the tongue 17 whereupon portion 17 is moistened and applied to the end of sheet 6, flap 9 being omit-ted in this instance. Then the package is completed as before and is secured in closed position by moistening the surface 18 and securing the same to the side of the tube thus formed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A parcel wrapper comprising a flexible sheet adapted to be rolled into a tube; three adjoining flaps on each side of said sheet adapted to be inserted in the ends of said tube, the central flap on each side of said sheet being outwardly divergent in form and adapted to expand in and interlock with said tubes; and an adhesive flap on said sheet, substantially as described.
2. A. parcel Wrapper comprising a flexible sheet adapted to be rolled into a tube; flaps on each side of said sheet adapted to be inserted in the ends of said tube, one flap on each side of said sheet being outwardly divergent in form and adapted to expand in and interlock with said tubes; and an adhesive flap on said sheet, substantially as described.
3. A parcel Wrapper comprising a flexible sheet; a pocket arranged on the inner side of said sheet at one end, said sheet being GASTON J GORY.
