ERVIN E. STRAWN, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed December 14, 1917.
To all h it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERVIN E. STRAwN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders and the object is to provide improved means for securing the sheets to the cover, said means comprising a plurality of flexible devices so positioned that they register with slots or apertures formed in the sheets, the flexible devices being engaged by detachable staples or the like formed of resilient ma terial.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed:
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the binder open with leaves secured therein by my improved fastening device.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail View of the fastening device of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing another form of fastening device.
Fig. 5 shows the fastener of Fig. 4 detached.
Fig. 6 is a detail of a further modifica tion.
In carrying out my invention I employ a binder comprising outer cover members 10 and 12 connected by means of a flexible strip 13 in any suitable manner, a plurality of flexible devices 14 and 15 extending transversely of the cover members and across their line of connection being secured beneath the strip above mentioned. In the drawings I have shown two of these flexible devices 14 and 15, and it is obvious that the number may be varied as desired.
One of the sheets to be secured to the binder is designated 18, this sheet being folded along a line 19 andbeing provided with apertures or slots 20 extending transversely of the fold 19. The flexible devices or tapes 14 and 15 extend through these slots to a slight degree and are engaged by a plurality of spring members or staples designated 22 for taking up slack in the tapes and each comprising a substantially straight Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Serial No. 207,165.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown another form of spring including a loop 28 and a plurality of members adapted to extend in approximately parallel relation, one of these members being longer than the other and designated 29, said member having a hook 30 formed at the end, and the opposite member 31 having a small book 32 formed at the end. Each of these members is provided with deflected portions forming small loops and corresponding projecting members, positioned opposite each other, the projecting members of one branch of the staple being designated 33 and the other branch thereof 34. These members 33 and 34 are designed to pass through the flexible devices 14 and 15 when the staples are in securing position.
A device constructed as illustrated is inexpensive and unusually eflicient, the spring members providing for an increase or decrease in the number of sheets, and providing for taking up slack when the binder is closed, and said spring members when in position securely retaining the sheets and at the same time permitting of their prompt removal when desired.
A student employing the device for making notes in different classes may use a number of these sheets in a single binder, one or more sheets being devoted to a single subject, and may then transfer the proper sheets to separate permanent binders for keeping a permanent record of his notes relating to each subject. A unit of about 24 sheets may be used and transferred in the manner indicated.
In Fig. 6, I have shown another form of the spring fastening device, including a straight portion 37, and an oppositely located portion in the form of a compound curve and including deflected portions 38, and 40. The element 37 is deflected at 39 as shown.
I claim: 1. In a device of the class described, a cover, a plurality of flexible devices extending transversely of the hinged portion of the.
cover, said devices forming loops, a plurality of sheets provided with apertures at the line of the fold thereof and positioned to register With the flexible devices When the sheets are in position in the cover, and a plurality of devices for engaging the flexible devices and adapted to be passed between the latter and the inner surface of the sheets to be secured, said devices comprising bifurcated members, the arms of Which are provided with engaging devices adapted to hold the staple members in position Within the flexible devices.
2.. In a device of the class described, a cover, a plurality of flexible devices mounted therein, a plurality of folded sheets having apertures formed therein at the line of the fold the apertures registering With the flexible devices, and resilient devices each including a plurality of longitudinally extending leg members, said resilient devices taking up the slack in the flexible devices.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
