To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD POOL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Closing Inkells, of which the following is a speclfication.

This invention relates to stationary articles and it is the principal object of the invention to provide an automatic self closing inkwell, the closure thereof being operated by the resting of a pen, pencil or other writing implement upon means connected to the said closure, thus, preventing the spilling or evaporation of the ink.

Among other aims and ob]ects of the 1nvention may be recited, the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the num ber of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efiiciency and operation high.

The foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangements of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein said embodiment of the invention is illustrated'for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.

Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the inkwell closure.

Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the housing having an opening formed in the top thereof into which the inkwell 2 is inserted, the 11 per marginal edge of said inkwell being anged as at 3 in order that the same will seat upon the top portion of the said housing.

Hinged to the top of the housing 1 directly adjacent the inkwell 2, as at 4 is a closure 5, the said hinge being provided with a laterally extending arm 6 having an elongated slot 7 formed therein.

Pivotally and slidably engaged with the slot 7 formed in the arm 6 is a lever 8 the lower end of which is pivoted to a suitable bearing 9 arranged upon the rear wall of the housing 1. A second lever 10 is pivotally connected to the lever 8 and has its lower end engaged in a like manner with a bearing 11 formed upon the inner end of a lever 12, which lever is pivoted upon a suitable shaft 13 arranged transversely of the lower portion of the housing 1 and supported in bearings 1% formed upon the opposite side walls thereof. In this connection, it is to be noted that the lever 12 is substantially U-shaped and has the extremities thereof arranged upon the front side of the housing 1 and passing through suitable openings formed therein. A rack or trough 15 is secured to the extremities of the U-shaped lever 12 by suitable means, thus, providing a receptacle for receiving the pen, pencil or other writing implements. As will be noted, the lever 12 is pivotally mounted off the center and carries upon its inner end a counter-weight 16.

In operation, the closure 5 is normally maintained in position over the inkwell 2 by resting a writing implement in the trough 15, the weight of the same being sutlicient to counter-act the weight 16, thus, moving the lever 10 upwardly and the upper end of the lever 8 rearwardly in the slot 7 formed in the arm (3. However, upon removable of the writing implement from the trough 15, the weight 16 will move downwardly, drawing the lever 10 in a similar direction and moving the lever 8 forwardly in the slot 7 of the said arm (5. Such movement of the levers 8 and 10 will cause the closure 5 to be swung to open position whereat the same will remain until the writing implement is again replaced in the trough 15.

Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my inventlon.

I claim In an inkstand, a housing, an inkwell received therein, a lid hinged to said housing and movable over the inkwell, a slotted arm rigidly carried by said lid and extending into said housing, levers pivotally and slidably engaged with the slotted arm, one of said levers being mounted upon a wall of the housing, a U-shaped lever arranged in the housing and extending through an opening therein beyond the same having its inner end pivotally connected to the remaining of said first levers a counterweight carried by the U-shaped lever adjacent its connection with said remaining levers, and a rack arranged upon the outer end of the U-shaped lever for receiving an implement therein and causing the lid to be swung into closed position. 10
