Application filed March 28, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, GUDLAUGUR OLAFSON, of the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to improvements in squares, particularly carpenters squares, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a. folding square which can be readily collapsed when not in use and which can be easily opened up when required.
A further object of the invention is to construct the folding square in a simple and durable manner and so that when extended or opened it will be automatically locked with the arms thereof in true positions, that is to say, with the arms intersecting at a set predetermined angle.
With the above objects in view the invention consists essentially in a pair of arms pivotally connected together, a pair of pivotally connected links having their outer ends pivotally attached to the arms and with the inner end of one link extending beyond the point of connection of the inner ends of the links and a clip carried by the extending end of the said link and adapted to close over the other link, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a side view of the square in the set open position.

straight edges as is customary. The arm 1 is considerably longer than the arm 2 for a reason hereinafter disclosed. The ends of the arms are pivotally connected together by a rivet 3.
Between the arms I locate a pair of links 1 and 5 which have their outer ends pivotally fastened such as by rivets 6 and 7 to the arms and have their inner ends pivotally connected together by a rivet 8. The rivets 6 and 7 are positioned an equal distance'from the center of the rivet 3 as they are also from the rivet 8 and the link connection between the arms is such, in the present instance, that when the arms are opened up to the full extent as shown in Fig. 1 they make an angle of ninety degrees one with the other.
Between the pivot point 8 and the pivot points 6. and 7 the arms are offset slightly and in opposite directions as indicated at E) and 10, the offset being made to allow the end 2 of the arm 2 to pass between the links when the square is folded from the open position as shown in Fig. 1 to the closed position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In these latter figures it will be observed that the arm 2 lies immediately in front of the arm 1 and has the outer end 2 thereof received between the links which makes the square very compact when finally closed.
In order to lock the joint between the links when the square is opened up to its limiting position I have extended the end of the link 5 beyond the pivot 8 and have provided the extending end indicated at 5 with a clip 11 which in the fully open posi pion of the square clips over the body of the ink 4.
Here I wish it to be observed that in the full open position of the square the offset in the link 4 is received within the clip with the result that as the links gradually open up the offset acts as a spring against the clip and causes a gradual tightening so that when the square is finally opened there is no tendency for the links to break joint until one purposely takes his hand and shoves outwardly at the joint 8.
From the above disclosure it will be apparent that this device can be readily carried about as it is very compact when folded and further that it can be very quickly set up for use and can be relied upon when set to remain set.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a folding square the combination With a pair 01": pivotally connected arms, of a pair of links having their inner ends pivotally connected together and with one link having the inner end extended beyond the pivot point and the outer ends of both links pivotally connected to the arms and both of said links having the body portions thereof ofiset outwardly adjacent the pivot point connecting them and a clip carried by the above mentioned extended end and adapted to releasably catch and hold the other link in the extended position of the arms.
2. The combination With a long and a short arm pivotally connected together, of a link pivotally secured at one end to the long arm and having the other end thereof oflset, a second link pivotally attached to the offset end of the former link and pivotally connected to the short arm and having the ofiset arranged so that When the arms are folded together the short arm enters bebetWeen the links.
3. The combination With a long and a short arm pivotally connected together, of a link pivotally secured at one end to the long arm and having the other end thereof offset, a second link pivotally attached to the offset end of the former link and pivotally connected to the short arm and having the oifsets arranged so that When the arms are folded together the short arm enters between the links and a clip secured to the offset end of the link connected to the long arm and constructed to releasably catch and hold the body of the link attached to the short arm upon the arms being extended.
