UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN TYLER, OF WEST LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
CURB FOR WATER- WH EELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TYLER, of West Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Curbs of Water- WVheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification. I
The water-wheel curb to which I have made an improvement is of such a shape as to form a scroll water-way around the wheel; and my improvement consists in terminating the said scroll water-way by a movable lipb of sucha shape that its inner curved surface brings the scroll to a point at th periphery of the wheel when the lip is closed and whose straight surface forms one side of the mouth A of the said scroll water-way. The lip 19 works on the hinge c. The closed position of said lip is represented in Fig. 2 and its open position in Fig. 3. It will be perceived that the pressure and friction of the water as it passes into the mouth of'the scroll water-way will keep the lip b inrits closed position, and should any obstruction be drawn into the wheel and be brought in contact with the said lip b it will be thrown open, and thus prevent injury to the curb or to the buckets of the wheel. This improvement also enables the outer extremity of the lip b to be brought much closer to the extremities of the buckets of the water-wheel than it would be safe to do, if it were a solid portion of the curb, which causes the Water to act with greater efficiency upon the wheel.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Combining the within-described hinged lip b with the curb of, a water-wheel in such a manner that its inner curved surface forms the termination of the scroll waterway surrounding the wheel, while its straight surface forms one side of the mouth of the said scroll water-way, for the purposes herein set forth.
The above specification of myimprovement in the curbs of water-wheels signed and witnessed this 17th day of February, 1855.
JOHN TYLER.
